Republicans vs Democrats: Who Knows More?

In fact, out of the 12 multiple-choice questions asked in a Pew Research Center phone survey of more than 1,000 adults, Republicans answered an average of about 6 questions correctly compared with 5 for Democrats. (The survey was conducted between Jan. 14 and Jan. 17, and included cell phones and landlines.)
These political-party differences are partly a reflection of the demographics, with Republicans tending to be older, well-educated and male – all factors associated with political and economic knowledge. Even after accounting for these factors, however, Pew scientists found a gap.
But Dems can't take all the blame for national ignorance. Just 2 percent of the public answered all questions correctly, while 6 percent failed to answer a single question right. On average, Americans got just 5 out of 12 correct.
Even so, many people still talk the talk. For instance, even though respondents consistently expressed strong interest in the health care debate, just 32 percent knew the Senate passed its version of the legislation without a single Republican vote. And, in what proved to be the most difficult question on the quiz, just 26 percent knew that it takes 60 votes to break a filibuster in the Senate and force a vote on a bill."

In an age where information is so readily available, why are Americans more misinformed than ever?

The problem with our government leaders is that they have no intellectual criteria to meet. Any crook or scam artist or con man or jackass can become a politician sincehe has no minimum requirement to meet. The election of George Bush is the Laugh since the history of civilization began and he produced an encore since the people or someone relected him for a second term. Now as I look at Amrica as a Society and realize that living through trwo terms of George Bush and his gang is proof enough for me that the mentality of the American public does not exist. Americans are brainless and gutless unless they have a leader and too, the Dregs of American society have found their niche in politics. Instead of the human races trying to find a way of peaceful co-existence, the leaders seek more wealth and power and get no backlash from the public. Washington operates free of the public influence. What does Obama care about what the people think? The same can be said of Bush, He ran the world from his oval office and didn't give a damn what the congress or the people thought and neither Obama nor the people will hold the Bush government accountable and that is American history since it was founded in 1776. Neither the congress nor the Senate nor the Supreme court nor the Executive office has ever been held accountable for their arrogance and incompetence. This is America's legacy for history. War without peace.

The least people are informed the easier it is to manipulate them.
Our education is a laughing stock compared to the rest of the industrialized world and we are and will continue paying for it. We need more funding for public and college education and parents need to play a bigger role in their childrens lives and not let the TV raise their kids.
Also our corporations and the corporate media is to blame for this because if everyone was aware of how almost every aspect of their life is in one way or another affected and shaped by them they will be more afraid of corporations than the government.
Until we deal with these issues nothing will change in fact the people will become more idiotic. Check out the movie Idiocracy..............it's funny but in many ways very true.

Wow, go on the Pew Research site and in a list of the Publics Priorities for 2010, Terrorism is number 3, while Health Care is number 12!
Talk about being brainwashed.
You have about the same chance of getting attacked by a terrorist as you do winning the lottery. Yet everyone is affected by Health Care. People really need to get their priorities straight. - 2 years ago

If I were to answer this without reading the article I'd say Democrats. After reading it I say that the better way of life is a Democrat world with liberal love sprinkled on top. It seems to me that Republicans have a table for only who they like and anyone else just get scraps. Like how they view big business tax cuts. The Big Business gets tax cuts and then it trickles down....or they toss out scraps for all the small ones. Leaving out homosexuals from getting married. Leaving out atheist from being able to share their views. Just a whole lot of leaving out. I don't see how that can be smart at all.

On average, neither Republicans nor Democrats got more than 50% of the questions right! The fact that they were multiple-choice makes it even worse. Yet so many of the ill-informed public have such passionate opinions. They are extremely emotional, even violent, about things they know little about.
While the people are to blame, (it's not hard to educate oneself about the issues of today,) so are the politicians and pundants. Deserved or not, people put their trust in public officials and news organizations. Not everyone has the will to read a 1000+ page bill, and they expect these public figures to read it, analyze it and report on it truthfully. The problem is that these public figures distort the facts or even lie outright.
As unfortunate as it is, people must stop putting their blind faith in their chosen politicians, so-called analysts and the media. It's time to read legislation for yourself, look at reports provided by medical organizations, commissions, research panels and scientists. (Pick you controversy... there is plenty of independent, unbiased information out there.) It may be boring to you, but it's important to your future, the future of your children and your country.
I may not agree with everyone, but I will respect anyone's opinion, as long as it is an informed opinion. Educate yourself before you start telling others how wrong they are.

http://www.gallup.com/poll/125423/Americans-Postgraduate-Education-Back-Obama.as...
Seems to clash with this:
"Barack Obama's job approval rating, which has averaged 50% since Dec. 1, continues to be significantly above that average among Americans with postgraduate education (58%)."

A few years ago a poll found that viewers of "The Daily Show" scored higher on current events knowledge than viewers of "Fox News." The right wing spun it into "Democrats get their news from "The Daily Show."
I would definitely need to see more polls before I could ever believe the right is more informed than the left. The quality and integrity of left wing vs right wing web sites suggests the left wing is significantly better informed.

I want to place much of the over all ignorance of The United States of America on its best attribute; Freedom. We can analyze and consider many of the details that influence the problem. Yet, from the poorest communities to the wealthiest and heavily invested, intellect and success resides in the determination of each individual. Persons that move out of their families homes and on their own to attend college face this very challenge. College students must take responsibility of the freedom they acquire. Obviously, a college student has access to a great number of educational resources. Though in this day in age, every person truly has access to a great deal of information with the power of the internet, public libraries, pbs and other informative programming. It is up to the individual to give serious thought to the options available to them. There is the issue of people not being aware of what is available to them. That is where determination plays it role.
I have noticed an overwhelming amount of people sharing the common attitude that they feel strained and stressed from working to provide an income. For these same people, studying subjects they feel are unrelated to their jobs or interest would be a waste of time, or added strain to their energy. Those persons would rather relax and enjoy what leisure resources they have. Understandably, if you work two jobs and come home to a situation that demands more solutions than you can provide, it would be easier to enjoy some mindless self indulgence; whether it be drinking some beers while watching some sports, smoking some weed and watching adult swim, rallying with Glenn Beck or cheering on Keith Olbermann. These activities help some get through the problems they face.
The conservative Christian, regardless of age, generally comes from an environment that values its history and traditions almost as much as its ideologies. Whether their history is correct is not important for the point I am trying to make. When you take the average youthful liberal, it can be seen there is a good portion that have lived away from rural areas. Being brought up in the city and suburbs takes many (not all) away from traditions, which detach them from a sense or interest in history. There is an overwhelming amount of the populace on all sides of political spectrum that have been raised off western media, through the television programming and music industry. We could easily blame the parents for not being more responsible, yet we must consider their lack of awareness of options or resources to provide a better upbringing for their children: though we can not forget the concept of determination.
I am no scholar. I do not have a great deal of knowledge on any one particular subject that pertains to this topic. I admittedly have a deep interest in anthropology. That is the label we can give it, but through out my life I have been keen on being observant of everything in life. I can say that even after recognizing many of the problems that are facing us, those same issues can be found in my own character. I am a college student that finally lives on his own. My parents still provide for me so that I may focus on my studies. I undoubtedly have an overwhelming amount of freedom. For all the generosity from my parents, they lacked in discipline. I managed to waste much of the first two and a half years on my own, just fooling around with self indulgence. I am learning that saying you appreciate and value freedom does not mean much unless you can really show it. I have had to turn myself around, while putting pride aside to ask for help when it was needed. The focus in my life is self-discipline and determination. I still have much learning ahead, but its about time I got serious.
I want to end this with a great quote;
"Those who fail to plan, plan to fail."

Thats very insightful post reflecting the problem with most young Americans. I and many of my friend also blew our first two years getting drunk, smoking weed and slaying bitchs. Since my junior I've laid off the self indulgence and began studying. Most of my friends, however have not, and don't think they ever will!

Polls are just a snapshot into the mentality of people. Out of 1000 people, getting half of these questions right is the average. It highlights the misinformation that is prevalent in our society; what's BS about that?

No they are not; the 1000 people represent those 1000 people. It's just an example, an implication. No where is the article misleading or misrepresenting itself to represent more people than it polled.

Pathetic, this is why our education system needs to be reformed. Civics classes should be mandatory, Social Studies classes should be more interactive, critical thinking as well as reasoning should be taught to a greater degree.
Btw, you can now take the Pew test online.

Yes, The Bush Administration did come up with it:
http://www2.ed.gov/nclb/overview/intro/factsheet.htmlAnd you're right, it was supported by T.Kennedy, however, this is also from the article you cited:
"Sen. Kennedy later sharply criticized the administration for not putting enough money into No Child." and "he was talking with Spellings late into the second Bush term about rewriting No Child."Bush broke his promise to fully fund the bill.
