US speeding up missile defenses in Persian Gulf

The Obama administration is accelerating the deployment of new defenses against possible Iranian missile attacks in the Persian Gulf, placing special ships off the Iranian coast and antimissile systems in at least four Arab countries, according to administration and military officials.

The deployments come at a critical turning point in President Obama’s dealings with Iran. After months of unsuccessful diplomatic outreach, the administration is trying to win broad international consensus for sanctions against the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps, which Western nations say control a covert nuclear arms program.

    • The government needs to stop making Iran out to be some sort of boogie man. Iran does not pose half or even a quarter of the threat to the US that the USSR did.

Not even half of a quarter of a half of a quarter of a threat.

They have no sophisticated modern military and they're halfway around the damn world.

I'll bet we could convince Americans that Azerbijan was a threat if we screamed it loud enough.

    • So we need to build them missile defense system so they can stop the bombs we are already dropping on them. this is good, why don't we figure out another way to lose money really quickly.

    • Hey, maybe we will get lucky on this one. Maybe, just maybe, Iran and Israel will nuke each other at the same instant! Get rid of both of them at the same time, ya know?

Then all we have to do is help China develop Africa so the religious extremist don't take over. And just ignore North Korea until they have a medevil peasant revolt! We'll be half way to world peace!

    • JanForGore, as much as I agree with you, those missiles may end up being useful. I doubt Iran would ever send missiles to any of the countries of Arabian Gulf without the intent to spark war, in which everyone would use all they have got. At the same time, my own experience living in Kuwait causes me to be thankful for the United States Military aid of patriot missiles. In 2003, before the U.S. military began the "Shock and Awe" campaign, Saddam Hussein sent off a few scuds to Kuwait. If I remember correctly, two had been shot down from the sky. I know for sure that one hit right outside of a mall, Souk Sharq. No one was hurt, though there was some property damage. Days before and after the incident, the Kuwaiti government would run warning exercises, which means sirens would blast loudly through out the country, and everyone would have to run for cover as quickly as possible. I was in 10th Grade back then. There were times when the only place to hide was under my desk in school. How safe do you think I felt?

I do not agree with the decision to supply the Middle East countries with more weapons. This will only serve to heighten tensions in the area. I think its safe to assume that it is the objective. We are getting to the point where something has got to give. Personally, I think Iran has every right to nuclear weapons. Plus, Iran could destroy and conquer the entire Middle East. That is why the other countries still need the U.S.'s military aid, for security. It makes for quite a conundrum. Threatening behavior does not seem the right choice, at least not right now it doesn't.

very interesting bio...thanks for sharing. It's very interesting to hear how life is over there.

I'm not so sure about your statement that Iran could conquer the entire Middle East, let's not forget Israel.

And about Iran owning Nuclear Weapons...i'm not so sure I agree with that either. Their government is obviously a theocratic regime run not by the general will but the will of their leaders and they seem to have little compliance with the international community and little respect for it as well, as shown by their lack of communication and cooperation.

    • Well, whatever is Obama's intentions, I hope it doesn't lead to escalation in violence over there.

A little while ago, my mother found out she has a half-brother that lives in Qatar with a family. I would hate to see anything bad happen over there that either effects their home, or even worse, their lives.

    • Missile defense research/development and deployment is one of the saner features of international relations. Everyone who CAN,... should,... "git er done". And these systems ARE going to develop,...regardless of what some might "find ideal".

    • When reading the full article its clear that our allies support this defense system. In addition, the author of the article points out that 'the administration is trying to show Israel that there is no immediate need for military strikes against Iranian nuclear and missile facilities, according to administration officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity.' So Obama's move is a way to prevent a battle from flaring up in the middle east. Interestingly enough France and Germany are also on board with the plan.

As usual international relations generally has layers to it, ones that make it difficult to simplify.

Speaking of missile defense systems, the Obama Admin. halted the creation of one in eastern Europe.

    • And this isn't fearmongering? This is where our money goes to instead of healthcare and environmental preservation. And yet people fawned all over Obama during his State of the Union speech. This is just a continuation of the Bush years with some sweet talk thrown in.

With all do respect, and I do respect your numerous post :), SOMETIMES you have to flex your muscles to remind people you can kick their @$$. That is just how the world works. And if they don't respect your position as one of authority then you MUST come down on them hard. It worked like this during Machiavelli's life during the 1400's in Italy when he wrote "The Prince". It worked like this when Jesus overthrew the coin changers tables in the Temple. It worked like this when Sun Tzu wrote the "Art of War" hundreds of years before Christ.

This is how the world works.

cephas its with all 'due' respects dude :) anyway, just because sometimes you can it doesnt mean you have to flex your muscles, if America wanted to be at war with iran they would be by now, its the best way for a country to make money quickly, i do expect it in the near future, all you need is a spark (like 9/11). or to put it another, all America needs, is an excuse
