Banks Wary of Marijuana-Dispensary Accounts

Cristie Drumm, a spokeswoman for the banking giant, said Wells Fargo is examining state and federal laws to determine what the bank's risk is in working with dispensaries.
"We're not actively opening accounts with these businesses at this time," she said.
The move reflects a broader uneasiness among banks in the state about working with the medical-marijuana industry, and it marks one more cloud hovering over dispensaries. Though Drumm said she was unsure whether the bank would also re-evaluate its existing dispensary accounts, news of Wells Fargo's change in attitude has dispensary owners worried they might lose a key ally in their business plans.
"We wouldn't have a bank to put our money in," said Ryan Vincent, who owns The Health Center in Denver. "I don't know what we would do. We'd probably have to start rallying to put together a credit union."
Vincent said every dispensary he knows of uses Wells Fargo as its bank, largely because the industry has received a cold shoulder from other financial institutions. While Vincent said he understands the bank's need to do what's best for its business, he said shutting out dispensaries would deprive the bank of needed customers and deprive dispensaries of needed stability, possibly forcing them to operate in shadowy, cash-heavy ways.
"It's interesting to see that there's money and no one wants to hold onto it," Vincent said. "We're trying to be a legitimate, above-board industry in Colorado."
Tim Powers, a spokesman for the Colorado Bankers Association, agreed that it's unusual for banks to turn away potential customers, but he said legal and regulatory considerations have made many banks uncomfortable working with dispensaries. Federal law requires that banks not do business with companies operating illegally, and marijuana distribution — for medical purposes or not — is still illegal federally.
"Regulators are basically saying, 'Approach this with caution. There could be problems,' " Powers said. "Because of that, a lot of banks are taking the ultra-conservative approach."
"There's just lots of unknowns in this new emerging field of business."
That's true for dispensaries as well as banks.
"We wake up every morning with a new thing thrown at us," Vincent said.

No, No, No, it's a co-op, it's not for profit. That's why there are millionaires backing most of them. It's big business. Why do you think there are almost 1000 of them in L.A.? More than there are McDonalds, more than there are Starbucks, and it isn't because they want to help sick people.

Who cares if there are Billionaires behind these dispensaries ? The point is
they support the aleviation of unnecessary human suffering. Back in the late 70s there was a movie " Oh, God " starring George Burns, and John Denver.
I glimpsed only part of it, but saw a telling scene: John Denver was arguing that there was no God because, as his reasoning went, "How could God exist and still permit the collossal human pain and misery that typicaly transpires in the World ? " The actor portraying God responded saying that "Humans themselves are mainly responsible for their own misery, because the way they think negatively translates into the reality they create for themselves, however unaware they are that they have the power of creation within them being made unto the immage and likeness of God. And added further that it's the lack of fraternity and sorrority in the world that makes humans rob each other, and war with each other on every level" I'm sure we've all realized by now that it's human nature to want to be destructive, rather than constructive. Prohibition accomplished more evil in one quick misdeed than all the constructive uses of Cannabis accomplished good in thousands of years. It's both a blessing and a curse to be human. So let them enjoy their greed. The only way all that evil ignorance, and diabilical slander of the sacred herb will be undone is to promote the medical use of MJ. So that someday, when all 50 States have medical MJ laws, they will be able to liberalize them. And on that day, when you can walk into a Rite Aide, and buy a Z, as you could buy tinctures of cannabinoids in the Rexall chain of apothecaries before 1937, there won't be any more foreign oil wars either. I'm a cynic, and whenever I hear people talk of utopia, I laugh. But as a Dutch American, even I have to admit that if you can't take the jungle out of the human by taking the human out of the jungle, then for Christ's sake, sedate him/her so they can't make
their madness painful for others. The term society is based on the Latin
term for friendship ie social. We have to be considerate of others having
intrinsic value as humans to have tolerance, and thus Peace. - 2 years ago

Now not only can the DEA bust dispensaries and take their product but im sure it's nice for them to know they can also, confiscate dispensaries heavy cash. That goes to fund the expenses of the bust in the first place. The DEA already confiscates approximately $1 billion per year, domestically, also, they are tax funded. But that is not enough they can now go after tax paying law abiding citizens cash because the bank's won't do what they were founded to do, protect it. In my opinion in another life all law enforcement would make great criminals.

I suppose they were also wary of the cotton industry's accounts during the days of slavery. Or the big paper and oil/tobacco/alcohol industry accounts. Not that herb has any comparisons towards detrimental impact on persons or society.

I think forming their own bank would be a good answer. Dispensaries unite and form a 'dispensary credit union'. Stop letting corporations control everything in America. With the recent ruling by the Supreme Court, corporation are going to have a major role in how our elections are financed. We need alternatives to the corporate 'take over' of America.

"You know the Sun destroys the night,... night divides the day, try to run, try to
hide, break on through to the other side, yeah ! " With 13 States on board the
Peace train now, like the original 13 colonies, there's going to be a lightning
bolt that breaks up those dark clouds coming soon. The West, yeah, the West is the best, man. - 2 years ago
