A nine-year-old Chinese schoolgirl has become one of the world's youngest mothers after giving birth to a healthy boy.
The unnamed girl was brought to a hospital in Changchun, which lies in the north-east of the country, when she was eight and a half months pregnant.
Two days later, she gave birth to the 6lb boy by Caesarean section, a Chinese newspaper has reported.
The child comes from the nearby town of Songyuan. Her family refused to discuss the pregnancy, but confirmed they had reported it to the police.
Last night police were reportedly trying to establish who the father is.
In the province, sex with a child under the age of 14 brings an automatic rape conviction and a lengthy jail sentence.
A legal expert told the paper that women under the age of 14 do not have sexual rights - 'so any argument of being consensual as a defence is completely untenable,' he said.
He added: 'Anyone who had sexual relations with a girl under 14 means they have committed rape and is to be punished severely.'
A hospital in China's largest city, Shanghai, recently said that about 30 per cent of abortions were on school-aged girls.
The youngest reported mother in the world - and the most bizarre of all young pregnancy cases - is five-year-old Lina Medina of Peru (pictured), who gave birth to a 6lb son named Gerardo in a Caesarean operation in 1939.
Her father was arrested on suspicion of sexual abuse but was later released because of lack of evidence.
In 1957 another Peruvian girl, aged nine, gave birth to a girl weighing just over 6lb and, curiously, it was in 2006 that yet another Peruvian girl, aged eight, gave birth to a 4lb 4oz girl.
Several other girls aged nine, from Thailand, Singapore, Rwanda and Brazil, have also given birth.
Mothers aged as young as 10 and 11 have also become an increasing occurrence.
The youngest mother in Britain is believed to have been 11 when she got pregnant and 12 years old when she gave birth.

      Born in Ticrapo, Peru,[1] Medina was brought to a hospital by her parents at the age of five years due to increasing abdominal size. She was originally thought to have had a tumor, but her doctors determined she was in her seventh month of pregnancy. Dr. Gerardo Lozada took her to Lima, Peru, prior to the surgery to have other specialists confirm that Medina was pregnant.

      A month and a half later, on May 14, 1939, she gave birth to a boy by a caesarean section necessitated by her small pelvis. The surgery was performed by Dr. Lozada and Dr. Busalleu, with Dr. Colareta providing anaesthesia. Her case was reported in detail by Dr. Edmundo Escomel in the medical journal La Presse Médicale, including the additional details that her menarche had occurred at eight months of age (or 2½ according to a different article)[1] and that she had prominent breast development by the age of four. By age five, her figure displayed pelvic widening and advanced.

    • well...in about 3 years they can watch cartoons together and learn the alphabet .... poor kid.... I bet in the Peru case it ws also the father .... fuckin sicko's should be castrated and all put on a deserted island together, but not one in a nice tropical climate, oh no... maybe one of the Aleutian Islands

    • It's probably unlikely that they'll catch the man who did this to the poor girl, (which is infinitely depressing) but if they do I hope he's punished to the full extent of the law. Unfortunately, even then his punishment will not inflict the same amount of pain, suffering, and emotional trauma on him as his crime did on the girl. The thought of it makes me want to vomit. I really hope something horrible outside of the law happens to him, like getting caught in a steel bear trap so he has to gnaw his own leg off to escape.

      there are a lot of theories of nutrition causing girls to reach puberty at really young ages. All of the pesticides on and in foods and hormones in milk especially, (supposedly) causing big problems.

      It's pretty dense to even associate contraceptives with needles.
      Even more so to associate causal sex with drug addiction.

      You analogy needs work. And abstinence does not work 100% of the time, that is why we have condoms.

      I'm sure if asked about your teenage years you likely were not a pure as you claim all kids should be, and if you were that just makes you a single example out of millions of other children, many who did not share you sentiment.

      We should find solutions that work for everyone instead of one that works for your moral compass.

      There really is no such thing as abstinence. If raging hormones -- part of the gift your god gave our children when they hit their teens (if not even younger, thanks to the raging hormones they're consuming in their foods) -- strike, there's little to stop a young person from having some form of sex.

      Even the holier-than-thou's of this world get pregnant at ridiculously young ages, and more so those who weren't taught about conception and contraception, etc., at a very young age.

      Aside from the fact that this girl was most likely raped, I was taught that abstinence was the only way or God would punish me severely. This left me almost completely CLUELESS when it came to the point where I did decide to become "active". Sure, abstinence is ideal, but what really needs to be taught is "smart sex" NOT "safe sex" because sex is NEVER 100% safe and kids need more honesty from adults so they can make better/smarter choices when they do choose to "do it." Give them real information and not just "ideas" because knowledge really is power.

      Yeah, but abstinence never has and never will work. People like to have sex. It is a natural thing. Better to teach people how to have sex safely than to risk the consequences that could happen from unsafe sex

    • This is perhaps one of the most saddest and disturbing stories I have ever read. I'm in my last year of high school and it's shocking enough to see a pregrant freshmen walking through the halls, but a 5 to 12-year old girl!?

      I really doubt they would release a photo of the 9-year-old. I'm sure they'd want to protect her identity. I'd hope so anyway...

    • Yes it says she delivered by C-section. As to how this happened, they're still investigating. They didn't bring her in until she was 8 1/2 months pregnant! Thank God she survived.

      What is causing girls to reach puberty prematurely?

      This whole thing is just sad, so sad. Poor kid. Will her family raise the child? Will the child be able to be a child or be forced to become a responsible mother?Such sad decisions to make at the wrong time in her life. She should be doing age appropriate things with her friends.

      I do hope the baby can be in a nurturing and loving environment, maybe with the biological family once the rapist is found. (if it was incestuous)
