Global throwdown: Somali pirates vs. North Korea

An awesome confluence of rogue actors:
The MV Rim was seized in the Gulf of Aden, outside the internationally recommended transit corridor patrolled by the anti-piracy naval coalition, said Cmdr. Anders Kallin of the EU Naval Force. The MV Rim has not had any communication with maritime authorities, but Kallin said an American warship, the USS Porter, and a helicopter from American warship USS Farragut confirmed the seizure of the ship to the EU. The 4,800-ton ship is owned by White Sea Shipping of Libya. It is carrying unknown cargo and the number and nationalities of the crew are not known. The seized ship was heading toward the Somali coast and warships were monitoring the situation, the EU Naval Force said.
It really kind of can't get any better than that, can it? The old Axis of Evil vs. the new Axis of Instability. Even Libya is involved! I mean maybe we could add "They announced it on Twitter and submitted a YouTube question to Obama from the open ocean." But no seriously, the only way this story could get any better was to throw a little Al Qaeda in it. Oh, what's that? A link between Somali pirates and Al Qaeda? Do tell, Foreign Policy magazine:
Somalia has two big scourges these days: Islamist milititas that run most of the country (and are linked to al Qaeda) and piracy off the coast....But what if the two scourges are linked?...Last December, a Canadian intelligence report indicated that Shabaab was in fact training pirates for their "duties." Further reporting from Jane's (summarized here) notes how taxes are levied on the pirates' booties. Yes, the pirates and the Islamists are definitely in cahoots.
All kidding aside, these sorts of links are worrisome. As global connectivity becomes more accessible, it's not hard to imagine a world in which there truly is an "Axis of Instability" aligning terrorists, religious militants, pirates, drug gangs, etc. It's a concern the DEA has put forward in their (alebit dubious) theories about Al Qaeda and the FARC. Let's just hope that the hostage negotiations between North Korea and the Somali pirates don't turn into partnership talks.

this reminds me of the old MTV show "celebrity deathmatch"
will it be the nukes or K.Illa's 6inch heels that kill off the pirates??
And will the Somali's counter attack by resorting to cannibalism? - 2 years ago

Horrible and frightening news, but I like the way you put it. We don't need another axis of any kind.

ya never know...it could be something North Korea had planned. NK could be in a plot to support Al Qaeda and all other enemies of the west. This presumed "hijacking" could just be a ploy that transported operatives, weapons, money, a nuke...
And because they were outside of the RTC, the UN can't really do much. It's a pretty good plan. Kinda like waving a gun around in your living room with the blinds but because its your private property the cops can't talk to you.

heh this is kinda interesting...in fact they're looking to buy armaments so maybe they need some cash and who better to sell old weaponry to?

So the NK ship was travelling OUTSIDE the internationally recommended transit corridor, the Somali Pirates hijacked it and whatever potentially dangerous cargo it had...and the UN Warships stood by and monitored the situation?
Hmm, my immediate thought was why not intervene there and then, but I guess international politics are not that simple, may be a case of 'not our boat, not our problem'
Soon might be.

pretty interesting stuff. Does this mean Al Qaeda is targetting all nations, not just western ones? Will North Korea join us in the war on terror?

Of course, there is a somewhat tenous relationship between the various Muslim factions. The recent problems in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria (600 killed) and militant activity in the Niger Delta, including pirate activity off the West Coast of Africa, indicates some degree of cooperation between global factions. Arms sales and the flow of money indicates some degree of cooperation, in my opinion.

It does seem strange. Not the problem of militarization or agreements or axis of whatever, but the rather thin reaction. The possibility of frictionless transitions by using these pirates as so-called highways for smuggling seems worrisome.
