Pet owner killed by dogs after saving them from death

A Slovenian who saved his three dogs from being put down for attacking humans was himself mauled to death by them, police said on Wednesday.

“Three dogs bit their 52-year-old owner to death in Ljubljana yesterday,” police spokeswoman Maja Adlesic said.

Four years ago, the three bullmastiffs attacked and seriously injured a passer-by outside their owner’s house. They spent years in custody pending legal hearings, but when one of them attacked a dog handler, authorities ordered them to be put down.

Their owner, a doctor, succeeded last June in his legal appeals to get the dogs back, sparking a national controversy. After his death, an opposition party said the agriculture minister should resign for failing to stop the dogs being released.

The dogs attacked the man in his garden on Tuesday, killing him before the police arrived. All three dogs were put down following the attack.

    • Mastiffs are an ancient breed and they are not for bleeding heart beginners. Instictive Inbteligence is a term every prospective dog owner should learn and research before they bring a prue bred dog into their lives. Cute puppies don't necessarily make good dogs.

NOTE: I predict we will see a slew of stories like this about Akitas in the next two years. Richard Gere has a movie coming out about an Akita. It will romanticize the breed, the population will explode and people will start getting mauled.

    • Once a dog starts biteing people they are doomed. I have seen this happen a few times once they start to bite people they just go bonkers.

    • I just blogged an article on Digg.com in which scientific researchers have identified an obsessive-compulsive gene in the canine species of mamals.
If these dogs had that gene, and were abused so badly they became traumatized, then if they were humans they would have had a legal defense as. dogs can become mentaly ill, same as human mamals. We still haven't progressed in the evolution of law that far from the time when most law was about property. So these poor dogs, who couldn't defend themselves, were yet again victimized by humans who killed them after abusing them. But I can see a new day dawning when dogs(and cats), will be raised up to the recognition of having animal rights in the same tone that we have human rights. China no longer raises dogs and cats for food which goes back thousands of years. I think Equador has recognized that even trees have legal rights. So in the midst of all this senseless tragedy, there is genuine hope for our animal friends. Many
of us recognize them as being more, not less than at least some humans. Dogs
and cats are personal bodyguards who have saved people from heart attacks by phoning 911, alerted people before earthquakes in California, saved
them from fires..,saved them from Murders. I myself have witnessed a genuine human interest story in which a female German Shepherd saved a male toddler
from being run over by a train by barking and butting him away from the tracks. The police chief of the town awarded the dog a medal for bravery. Many of us who know this is an Animal Planet feel they're angels in disguise. As a Bhuddist I believe they contain the reincarnated human souls of those who could not have balanced their Karma to ascend to heaven by returning as humans. Check out the Mathew Modine movie Fluke sometime, and you'll see what I mean. Peace.

The very first thing you do with dogs is establish who is the Alpha dog, it is the owner for all of the nyophites. That means at the right time the owner has the dog on its back with the dogs neck in your control so the dog knows your in control. You never hit a dog or kick a dog, the establishment of ALpha dog is no different than than its mother uses to control its pups or what the leader of a pack does. This guy needed Cesaer Milan ( the dog Whisperer) I have raised lardgebreeds for thirty five years (american bulldogs, rotties, shepards) not one problem. Too bad for him raise an asshole dog, you get fucked

    • I think the problem might not have been how he treated the dogs, but how the dogs were treated before he got them. From reading the general article, these dogs were not going to be put down because the kennels were too crowded, they were going to be put down because they had developed aggressive behavior. I've had four dogs to date in my family that I considered mine, and my current pup is four years old and never been aggressive to a person a day of her life. But I've had her since she was 3 months old and I have raised her to be a cuddly attention whore. Hell, I never trained her how to be around small kids, and the first time she met my youngest cousin, she let my cousin take the tennis ball out of her mouth and bop her on the nose repeatedly while saying, "No, no, no! My ball Washu!" My pup never even blinked. She let my cousin have the ball and just waited until my cousin put the ball down to pick it back up.

    • I've had pit bulls, bullmastiffs, mixed labs, greyhounds and german shepherds and none of them have ever come close to attacking me. My family and I have loved them and they have loved us in return.

It's all about how you treat dogs, they are your family and will treat you the same if you respect them!

I currently have 3 dogs... they are great!!

Yepper. Dogs are buds. ( Unless your "people skills" are not up to the task of pack management ) Bad dogs are virtually always the result of 'operator error'.

    • bullmastiffs are usually sweet and gentle dogs too, he must have seriously failed as a pet owner for them to get this vicious, and he paid the price, at least t wasn't someone else who died.

    • People who want bad, dangerous dogs, invariably teach them to be the way they want them. The dogs are treated badly, abusively.
And, apparently, he got what he wanted.

    • Should have fed them a whole lot better than that. Dogs won't bite the hand that feeds them unless they're rabid. Dogs do best when they're brought up in a family of humans, where a couple's kids pet them, and play games with them. And they're treated with human warmth & kindness.Canines are social animals which have personalities all their own. Despite human ignorance, there really are no exceptions to this rule because a dog is a specific breed. Dogs are made mean because of abuse and harsh treatment. Period. As a dog lover I would never keep my canine companions outside during hot or cold weather, and especially when it's raining, snowing or windy. I lived with an entire family of German Shepherds, and knew all their birth dates as if they were my kids. Not one of them were vicious. The mastiff you see pictured has a look of abject misery and suffering on his face. It's unmistakable to anyone who knows and loves dogs. And this story is tragicly sad. All of that
trajedy could have been avoided by simply providing sensitive caninies with
humane treatment they deserved, so that they would not develop the kind of
      P.T.S.D. that affects humans too.
