East Coast Faces Snowpocalypse - Are you snowed in?

Halfway across the chasm of winter, the storm charged over the Appalachians, smothering cities and quilting the countrysides of a half-dozen states from Virginia to New Jersey. It obliterated Washington with over 20 inches, Baltimore with a record 30 inches and Philadelphia with 26.7 inches. Some sections of West Virginia were hit by nearly three feet of snow.
But the blow, which began Friday night and tapered off at midafternoon on Saturday, had sharply defined shoulders to the north and south, and it spared New York City and Long Island with a mere 3 to 6 inches, and the Southeastern states got off with some rain.
The hard edges of Washington were softened as the snow recast the capital of monuments and malls into a postcard town of soft ice cream shapes that had been statues and aerodynamic blobs that had been parked cars: the buried machines of a lost civilization. The Capitol and the White House vanished in the whiteout, cross-country skiers appeared in parks and the Potomac was a grayish plate of pewter.
The National Weather Service said the blizzard did not challenge Washington’s 28-inch record, set in January 1922, a snowfall that collapsed the roof of the Knickerbocker Theater, killing 98 people and injuring 158. Nor did it rival the three-foot snowfall of 1772, long before record-keeping began, although it was noted in the diaries of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
President Obama, unlike the millions snowed in just in time for the Super Bowl, rode down the plowed driveway of the White House in a four-wheel drive sport-utility vehicle to the Capital Hilton Hotel, where he spoke to the Democratic National Committee. The president, a veteran of Chicago snows who has chided Washington for its timidity in modest storms, could not resist a quip: “Snowmageddon,” he said to loud applause.

It's been cold here in Maine, but we haven't had any snow in weeks. It sucks. I'm a snowboarding instructor, and I REALLY WANT A POWDER DAY.
Pennsylvania north has been totally snow free. It's not fair. DC has no use for snow.

They're taking snow out of here with backhoes and dumptrucks, finally this am.... We got 25" here, my trees and bushes are bent to the ground. We had to shovel over to them to shake the heavy snow off. The snow was even stuck to the sides of building! It takes hours to dig cars out. We had to dig out from the backdoor to make a path from the dog door so the pets could go out and do their business! They were snowed in!
My daughter was without power for most of yesterday.
All in all it's a beautiful site. We're glad it happened on a weekend. - 2 years ago

I get that this is extreme weather for much of the east coast and that much of the east coast might not be properly equipped to deal with this amount of snowfall, but 30 inches isn't really that much compared to the snowfall other parts of the nation are used to is it?

Varex_Sythe:
No. It isn't that crazy. I'm from Frederick, MD but am currently living in Denver, CO and the mountains here can easily get three feet in one storm. But it is pretty uncommon for the east coast to get so much snow and especially the mid-atlantic region where there aren't as many mountains. DC for example.

Pish tosh, as I am in Philadelphia and I did all shoveling in a single afternoon. This is exactly the same as the snowfall we had around december 19 2009 or so.

There's about 26" of snowfall here-but some monster drifts- it's chest-deep on an eight year old.

stock up on food, dont got to work, sit around a fire.
i may not know the misery of snowstorms considering how south i have always lived, but to me, that sounds like a potentially relaxing day.

I love a good snow storm. They aren't the most fun to drive in but as long as you have the necessities at home: wood for the fire, a few good movies or a good book, some food and even more wine then I can't think of a better way to spend a day. Plus they make the outdoors so beautiful and they are fun to walk around in and play with the dog! You should really move up north and get a taste of what I'm talking about.

I don't appreciate you calling 89 a coward. He never attacked you, he pointed out that he didn't write the title and even agreed with you.
And you can't get upset when people vote your comments down. It simply means that they found your comments negative, non-relevant, or just plain bad. I think yours qualified as all three.

Oh, so you admit it was him? I didn't mention any names. Back again with your nastiness? I don't appreciate you butting in on my comments that had nothing to do with you. Now vote that down too if it validates your arrogant superiority complex here. And I don't need to click a button to be a coward. I will tell you what I think in a comment to your face.

Lol, who else could you have been talking to? If not 89, then yourself (in that case you might want to see a shrink). I know the comment had nothing to do with me, but when I see people being unfair, I tend to lay my opinion down.
And I know full well that you think the new comment system is silly, but you thought recommending comments was cowardly too. I think it best you stop complaining and stick to your passive aggressive tagging.

If you have an issue with the headline talk to A_Fitzgerald about it as I didn't write it (it was edited, not that I care). The original title that I posted was "East coast braces for snowstorm. truthfully I think the title is making fun of the hysteria, but that's just my interpretation.
On another note I do agree with you that people are overacting.
