Republicans Favor Medical Marijuana, Poll Shows

Medical marijuana’s support among voters in New York State is so solid that even a substantial majority of Republicans favor its legalization, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday. The poll found that 71 percent of voters supported medical marijuana, including 55 percent of registered Republicans. The poll numbers seem to confirm others cited by sponsors of the current medical marijuana bill in the Assembly. The poll, on a range of issues before the State Legislature, also found that 75 percent of New York voters support a wage freeze for state workers to help balance the budget, while 78 percent oppose cutting state aid to schools to do so. Gov. David A. Paterson’s proposed tax on sugary sodas, meanwhile, was opposed by 57 percent of voters.

    • Jack, I always make it a point to follow your articles, blog them, even send them to my mail and star them. I must have a log of 95% of all your contributions thus far. But as I still live in New York, this is the best article of yours I've logged in a while. I'm not surprised. New Jersey has already gone that route. But in a place where the draconian Rockefeller statutes blackened New York's history, this
contribution sure makes me glad, Thanks, hombre.

    • ocanada is all wet, marijuana is THAT important, it is a civil right that must be restored in our "free" country. Can't you chew bubblegum and walk at the same time? Marijuana must be dealt with for the millions who want and need it.

I understand waht Ocanada is saying, but it's not just a 'usage' issue. We have been at war on our own soil for decades. Americans are being locked up in prisons across the country. Private Prisons have become a industry in America, while denying an industry, which would be less destructive to American society.

The war on cannabis was based on lies. So many lies, many think it is impossible to change things. I say, 'the truth will set many prisoners free'. It's time for honesty. Honesty would end the war and stop the money, which is flowing to prisons, to lock up people based on lies and disinformation.

    • Guess Republicans figured out they can make more money selling the stuff than they can trying to prevent it from being used...

    • Marijuana stories don't deserve to be one and two on this list. Not with all that is going on in the country and the world. That little plant just aint that important.

That's what I think is great about current, people can vote a story up, even if they never comment. Many people would like to see cannabis hemp laws changed, but don't speak up for fear of loosing their jobs, etc. Kudos to current and kudos to those to help keep the conversation and information flowing.
