Toyota's U.S. Chief, Yoshimi Inaba, to Appear Before Congress

When Yoshimi Inaba took over the North American operations of Toyota Motor Corp. last year, the veteran executive was charged with turning around the company's largest unit by restoring it to profitability. Now the 63-year-old Mr. Inaba is preparing for a job he never imagined: testifying before Congress to explain Toyota's safety troubles.

A graduate of Northwestern University with years of experience in the U.S., Mr. Inaba is one of Toyota's most effective bridges between the Japanese and American cultures. He worked in the U.S. for eight years during two separate stints and was lured out of retirement last year at the [request of] Toyota President Akio Toyoda, who needed a lieutenant to straighten out the U.S. operations.

His new assignment was unlike his previous ones when Toyota's U.S. business was growing by leaps and bounds. This time, the Osaka native must contend with excess plant capacity, slumping sales and an image crisis that threatens the company's reputation as a quality leader.
