Lord Howe Island, 800 miles off the coast of Sydney and considered by many to be one of the most beautiful places in the world, has a rat problem. Island officials are willing to go to great lengths to exterminate the invasive pests, while hoping to avoid any collateral wildlife deaths.

    • You could make little round feeders with conical rain umbrellas. Stick them all over about 50 feet apart. When the rats stick their heads in, little hammers could knock them out and they'd fall into a run-off gutter and drown.

-The whole system could be solar-powered where excess power is converted to microwaves & beamed up. Power companies pay you.

    • Why don't they just make it mandatory for every family to have at least one cat. Both cats and rats are nocturnal. Just let the cat out at night and it will do its thing and eventually bring the rat population down to manageable levels if not get rid of them entirely.

    • Let's do a little math, see if we can find a problem in the logic of the officials...

42 tonnes of rat poison + wildlife on island =/= population "control" of rats

      HOWEVER,

42 tonnes of rat poison + wildlife on island = poisoned, barren island declared an "environmental catastrophe".

    • this reminds me off when California poured tons of poison in our waterways to remove an invasive species of fish....funny thing,..it accidently killed everything instead of the one fish it was intended for,...and the water is still poisoned.....

    • Just throw some boa constrictors on there - then come back and rescue the over-population by snake removal.

Or peanut butter - put peanut butter of rat traps. Everybody makes money and rats died well.

    • This is bizarre. Their going to take all the animals off the island and kill the rats then bring the animals back? How are they going to get all the birds? Aren't there any reptiles? What about introducing a natural predator to rats?

    • Genocide indeed. There has got to be some other way to deal with this problem. One thats maybe a little more eco and animal friendly
