Gordon Brown faces backbench rebellion over vote reform

The government is proposing a referendum on changing the voting system.
From what I hear, it will be the system where you rank a number of parties instead of voting for one (though feel free to correct me if this is wrong).
"Voters rank candidates in order of preference and anyone getting more than 50% in the first round is elected."
The new system won't be for the election happening this year.
However, the Alternative Vote system is unpopular with Labour backbenchers who feel it could cost them seats, while others state the move is to 'woo' Lib Dems, if this years election ends with a hung parliament.
"As a result several would-be Labour rebels told the BBC they would not vote against the government, one declaring: "It's dead before it's even started - so what's the point?" "
