Even though this is the first seemingly logical thing I've heard from her, make no mistake: Bachmann is a class-A nut-job who thinks God tells her things (Bush, anyone?).
Here's a cartoon which condenses her political career into a short synopsis:

Here's a video produced by David Walker's group. Walker was the comptroller of the GAO who warned for years about the problems of deficit spending, only to be dismissed as a crack-pot by Bush; Walker resigned in 2008, and left to work from outside the gov't to educate the public of the problem.
This video is called IOUSA, and contains the answer to the question of how much military spending constitutes of the total expenditure.

I love all the young people complaining about how evil this person is for weaning America off social security. You guys do realize that YOU ARE NEVER GOING TO COLLECT FROM SOCIAL SECURITY! Most analysts agree that it is going to be financially insolvent as early as 2025.
I admire your convictions though. Keep on paying into the system, so corporate retirees can collect social security checks on top of their $80,000 a year pensions.

I think they should take the cap off social security. The ones who make the most should pay the most. Let them pay social security taxes on their millions. Why should ordinary Americans be forced to pay social security taxes on their entire incomes, while the rich only pay on a portion of theirs? A low portion at that. Social Security would be solvent in no time, if they paid on their entire incomes, like we do.

The solution would work but the political will is not there. No politician will fix social security for next generation because: (1) Politics is not a poor man’s hobby. Most politicians are rich, make good money while in office, and earn even more working the speaking circuit when they retire. So good luck finding enough politicians who will voluntarily increase the amount of social Security taxes they pay. (2) Young people do not vote in significant enough numbers for politicians to give a damn about them. (3) Most of our current politicians will be dead by time the younger generation is eligible for social security so they care little about its long term financial solvency.

Dagum, just lifting the cap that is currently at about 102,000 of earnings would make it solvent till the baby boomers die out. Here's the fucking problem we have too many rich bastards that are sucking the wealth of this country out from the the mouths of all of us.

I'm sure no politician would be willing to even discuss it. They get a raise, plus a raise during the year, when their Social Security cap has been met. It's a win, win for them. They vote in raises every year. They aren't going to bite the hands of those who feed them.
They get to stop contributing to Social Security, thereby getting an increase in their income. I never did understood why they were able to stop paying into Social Security during the year. To many, the dollar amount at which the cut off happens, is a small fraction of their overall income.

I am all for ending those programs as well. while we're at it. let the post office go private. It might actually make some money without the government running it. There are only three things the US Government must do according to the constitution... Retired folks rely on SS for income and Medicare to pay for the medical bills the later stages in life incur. I bet she'll change her tune when her age hits her like a ton of bricks and she can't work. Further more, retired people still pay taxes, insurance, and every other bill employed people do; even income tax. These people have worked their asses off for the better par of their lives, they deserve, no, we OWE them SS and Medicare. If you don't have a legitimate issue to bring up, don't make one up.

It is suppose to be a "Social" program, not a savings account. As a high wage earner I have paid the maximum into my social security for thirty years, I expect to get money when I retire. I have been self employed my entire life so I got to pay the full boat which is now I believe 15.6 percent which means through my life I have contributed almost 300 thousand dollars. If you pay it in you deserve it back whether you need it or not. Any person could contribute to a charity of their choice if they desire. If you don't need it give it away to someone who does. Furthermore the social security tax should be raised from maxing out at 90 grand and up to 150 grand and there will be enough money in the future.

That's why the repub mantra has been to "privatize" the accounts so that Wall Street could get richer as they do with 401k's and SEP's and the banks with IRA's. The problem with that solution is now you have people who don't understand market trends and stock price indexes trying to prevent their life savings from disaster.

Well she is right about Social Security. That program ain't secured jack squat in 50 years. I know. I was raised by my grand parents in Holly Grove AR and they had to pick up cans on the side of the road for recycling money just to pay for their prescriptions after they became too disabled to farm anymore. $125 SS checks just don't cut it. In the 12 years I've been working, I've already paid more money into SS than my grandparents will ever receive. SS need to die with the baby boomers. SS was a good idea in the beginning but the Rich have gutted it. In the beginning only the needy people under a certain income received SS. Then the Rich convinced congress that they should be able to get their money back when they retire, (Entitlement), so congress decided that Everyone should get paid by the government when they retire whether they need it or not.
I once read an article, (wish I could find it again), that showed that most of the people with personal retirement incomes of over $100,000.00 a year get back ALL the money they paid into SS within 8-12 years and after that they are getting money back that they never paid in.
Entitlements is what has destroyed SS. Lets get rid of Entitlements and go back to giving SS only to those that need it. Problem Solved!!!! - 2 years ago

the problem with SS is that we're need to find .7%+/- funding (annually) for it. Otherwise we are looking at a sustainable shelf life of 40-70 years (depending on who you talk to). Side not; i haven't looked into projections since the recession started.
The scary thing is the baby boomers are reaching the point were they are about to collect and the unemployment of under 25 yr olds is over 25%, (Not sure of the exact number i have read everything from 25-50 but i never spent the time to check it out with bls).

There are wealthy people all the time who think their wealth will last until their dying days, but low and behold, something out of their control (unscrupulous & greedy bankers/stock brokers, oil barons and insurance companies, etc.) causes them to lose everything - are you going to throw them out on the streets at 70 years old when they aren't physically able to work, but don't have money saved for retirement? As far as budget issues go, they should be debated and discussed in order of which programs that soak up the most money.
I think it's ridiculous that the Republicans are obsessed with constantly revisiting Social Security and Medicare...but pretty much refuse to discuss military spending which cost THREE TIMES what SS and Medicare cost.

The military CLEARLY takes up HALF our budget.
Please some me a link that shows how SS and medicaid take up half the budget.
All you did was link to a paper with a few military "highlights" that have no relationship to anything.
Your links did not tell us how much we spent last year on Iraq or Afghanistan.
Was it $1 billion total? Or was it closer to $1 TRILLION total?
Please stop pulling numbers our of your ass and out of context and trying to pass them off as "proof" to the larger discussion. Simply quoting "$250 million for missle shield" doesn't mean shit if it isn't rolled in with all the rest of the military spending that we did.....and that includes EVERYTHING we spent on Iraq and Afghanistan.
No fucking way -- none! -- Social Security comes close to matching what we spent on just Iraq alone. Roll in the trillions we've spent on Afghanistan over 7 years and it's no contest. Military spending far outpaces anything we spend on social services.

OK, relax, man. I didn't pull those links out of my ass, they came off of the official budget.
The actual budget figures are toward the end of the PDF. That's how the budget is presented by the office of the president, each department and administration's budget is laid out AFTER the office of the president presents a rosy picture of what all it's accomplishing. You didn't go far enough down to actually get to the budget figures.
I'm not making shit up, and you haven't posted a single link about what we are spending. You are just wrong on this. I am going to be a CPA in a few months, I know how to read financial statements, and I read that the military budget absorbs less of the US budget than either social security or medicare/medicaid. It's comparable, but it's still in third place.
I'm glad that you've gotten into this with me, you are going to come away with a better understanding of the budget and government finances. That's good stuff.

I don't know about anyone else, but at this point I'm pretty much operating on the assumption that I'll be working for the rest of the life, without any sort of safety net and quite possibly without any health care. I gotta say, it doesn't make for a very cheery state of mind.

Many, if not most corporations have retirement plans. Turn off the Fox news, it will set you free!

Which is why I specified not offering pensions--which most don't have, and which are vastly different than retirement plans as commonly offered.
Retirement plans are offered, but as I said, are pretty much uniformly tied to the market. A 401K that you've added to is great, unless the market crashes and you get to watch your investment disappear before your eyes.

All those plans are paid for by employees and are just a way for the company to steal. They generally have it arranged so that investments are tied to set company stocks and the employee can't get it back. It's a name only thing where the tax man hovers like the dark angle. meanwhile they've been making money on your money and writing you off - and do everything but rape you after work every night.

It's about damn time. I am sick of money coming out of my pay checks to support these greedy old fucks, whose politicians mismanaged and raped the Medicare and social security fund, knowing full well that they were bankrupting the programs for the next generations, yet still had no qualms about forcing the younger generations to pay into a system destroyed by their greed and incompetence.

Better idea:
We wean government off of our military spending!
Not sure the 1.2 TRILLION we're spending on Iraq and Afghanistan every six months is really sustainable.
Well, we all know it's not -- but the He-Man Macho Cult of the Christian Warrior Republican Party is so obsessed with proving how "tough" they are they refuse to reduce military spending and military adventurism.
Maybe if we all shout in unison to the GOP, "You're tough! You all have huge dicks and are very virile and manly!" they will have their egos stroked enough that they will allow the Dems to reduce military spending???

Not so simple: the TRUE underlying problem is special interests which control gov't spending despite massive deficits: this is bankruptcy of the corporatists, pure and simple.
e.g. Boeing pretty much armored the C-17 from critics by arranging for the aircraft to be made by sub-contractors who contribute parts from 44 States. Thus no politician is going to be willing to cut THEIR constituents from the mix by voting against this expenditure, even though the military says they don't NEED more aircraft. BO recently high-lighted this example of massive fraud, waste, and abuse, which was APPROVED by Congress.
And don't be so quick to dismiss the general public, the NIMBYs who want free gov't cheese but don't want to pay for it. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize SOMEONE has to pay for all the entitlements we've expected as a basic right all these years (and the Chinese have had enough of buying worthless bonds, thank you very much; we're fresh out of suckers).
However, I can't believe Bachmann dares touch this topic, which clearly is the 3rd rail of American politics. After decades of ponzinomics and policies based on "you can have your cake and eat it, too!"(whether trickle-down, no new taxes, etc), the Republicans have done more than their share to put us into this intractable mass hypnosis with a land-slide towards economic failure.
Further, she loses credibility by referencing Glenn Beck, an infotainer. Now THERE'S a good source of unbiased information (and it's not like SHE doesn't have access to better information, as an elected representative).

The government does not have to be weened off anything - they are only and solely the financial conduit for Mil industrial corporations. They (along with all the others, spend just about equally for both dems and republicans) - they aren't hedging their bets - they are 100% in the corner of the winner, for whom they are 100% the provider of their office, careers and incomes.
They simply buy their long-held position as receiving all your money (that you are paying).
People pay the "government" which is there, bought off and paid for, to pass that money to those who are taking that money. Corporations, banking and finance services. And yes, they are cheating in every way that is possible.Think of the government as their personal lawyers. The money goes from your pockets, directly into their pockets.
Everything else is BULLSHIT and illusion - so any of you who have been duped into thinking there's a Republican side or a Democratic side that might be, in some way, trying for to you: - forget it.
That's why all these people yelling about how bad Obama is blowing it, are complete dupes.
The system needs to go through a revolutionary change - BACK TO THE CONSTITUTION. And I mean revolutionary - because the government and it's agencies have been entirely stolen.
So get your head screwed on right. Stop being a dupe. You look like blow-hard - it simply isn't "hip" - you know, looks bad.

How bout just all the rich republicans.
I remember visiting my parents at their retirement village - a place filled with owners of long time Bay Area businesses; - a neighbor was pacing red-faced about his SS being reduced by some small amount. -This was a person who was rich!
Just conniving, small, self-centered greed - permeated some of them.Wilt Chamberlain said 'money just makes you more of what you are - if you are a wonderful person, you can be a great person, if you're an asshole - you're a bigger asshole'.
After all, that's what Republicans are - correct?

So typical of Michelle. Wonder if those at the Tea Bag Convention took time to burn there Social Security and Medicare Cards. After all there are Social Programs you hate. Have you also sent back your checks?

Yeah, gotta love the hypocracy of Tea Baggers railing against socialism, not even realizing they've relied on 'socialist' principles for their entire lives (and would be the first to cry "Foul!" if we halted their checks, or cut their Medicare).
