That's right, we've seen the patriot act strip away constitutional rights for the past eight years, and now they want to reauthorize it for another five.

Sign the petition: http://www.chooseliberty.org/liberty.aspx

Here's a quick rundown of what they want to reauthorize...

-Federal and State law enforcement on fishing expeditions, searching telephone, email, medical, financial, and various other records.

-Warrantless searches and roving wiretaps, paying telephone providers for access to TRILLIONS of phone records and ignoring Fourth Amendment protections.

-Broad powers for the Treasury Department and Immigrations Department to rewrite regulations, access records, and conduct proceedings in secret.

-Holding American citizens in violation of their constitutional rights simply because someone in the government has declared them an “enemy combatant.”

-Vast amounts of electronic data on virtually every American swept up by insider arrangements and purchases from phone companies, airlines and other businesses afraid to say no to a government “request.”

    • I am currently promoting an amendment that would abolish the Bill of Rights altogether to make this trend towards tyranny so much easier. I call it the "America Kicks the Ass out of all other counties combined and furthermore, likes Toby Keith and Nascar" Act. What do you think? Too much?

    • I have written letters to my congressmen to express my disapproval on another issue. I have to agree someone did read my letter BUT the response was rather absurd. My congressmen thanked me for supporting the initiative while I clearly stated I disapprove it.

While I can understand the skepticism about contacting congress person, we must keep on writing and calling for our voices to be heard.

    • I doubt the PATRIOT ACT did much. It was good to be passed after the 9/11 attacks because it gave America some sense of security (which was needed). Terrorism is a current obsolete threat and i doubt the act did much. It needs to be revoked and our administration needs to focus on more domestics issues instead of being terrified of foreign nations. It's about time the world unites.

America probably will experience another attack at some point. But we can only pick up the pieces and fight the hardship. It's McCarthyism all over, only "terrorists" instead of "communists." End the paranoia for a better tomorrow.

Yeah, and it also makes it mandatory that I have to go to a pharmacy every ten days and give them my driver's license, address, birth date, phone number.... etc. just to get a decongestant so I can breath through my nose....

Before this I could buy enough for a couple months without seeing a Pharmacist or giving any info to the store, just my money was good enough.

Why am I punished because some idiots make drugs out of OTC meds. Just make the pseudoephedrine a prescription and be done with it. At least I'd only have to go to the Pharmacist once a month.
I'm wasting time and gasoline to get there because of the 911 attack!?

    • It doesn't surprise me either, but are they all fucking on crack?

We are no more secure than we were before 9/11. The patriot act, which the name itself is an oxymoron because it is not "patriotic" at all, is a farce and being used to further the agenda and profits of a few select corporations part of a larger cabal.

    • ok, so don't write to your congressperson...got a better idea? It takes what, 5 minutes to send an e-mail to your congressperson, and the alternative is to spend those 5 minutes with another episode of American Idol?

We have to write to Congress. If we don't agree with what is going on then it is our civic duty in a Democracy to make our voices be heard, and while your pin-headed congressperson may not read your e-mail, they all have staff who do read correspondence, and report back to the congressperson.

    • At its heart, the Patriot Act streamlines communications between varying agencies that can work together to investigate terrorist activities. It also provides for easier and less cumbersome means of investigation and surveillance.

The Act also provides increased funding for victims of terrorist attacks and their families, as well as for the rebuilding of business and infrastructure that are damaged by terrorism.

The Patriot Act is divided into 10 separate sections known as “titles.” Each title contains numerous Sections that further clarify the provisions of the title.
The titles and sections delineate new powers that are provided to the federal government in order to facilitate investigation of terrorist activities, along with the relevant checks and balances that are designed to prevent abuse of power.

The provisions of the Patriot Act were carefully designed in response to the events that led up to the September 11 attacks. It was believed that bureaucratic red tape prevented vital surveillance activities and information transmissions that could potentially have thwarted the attacks.

The emphasis was on being sure that should another attack be planned, the government would have the power to prevent it from being completed.

What utter BS. If it did all that you claim it does, then whey did that Nigerian get onto the plane and almost bring it down during Christmas? The whole system of sharing information was pure BS.

In no way shape or form, did I ever suggest the Patriot act was perfect. But, without it we would suffer a tremendous amount more of violence and terror. No, we can completely stop a dedicated, trained terrorist from carrying out an attack on U.S. soil. There are holes in the policy and loop holes designed for the government to take advantage of the U.S.'s citizen's privacy. But, examine England during the "Troubles" with Ireland and the I.R.A esp. around the late 70's and early 80's. It was only though aggressive and constant pressure from the British Army, SAS, and M5/6 that kept the fatalities among innocent citizens to a minimum. This lead to diplomatic talks that while it still left Ireland fractured it was an outcome that both sides go live with. Without, England's constant, aggressive pressure the violence would have been biblical. Just for the record, I am Irish Catholic from Boston, so believe I have no love for the Brits.

Ah the 4th Amendment is over-rated anyways. Who needs any privacy or protected private property. Besides there are already several exceptions in place.

They create the problem and THEY respond with the solution. They want you to believe that the Patriot has in fact saved you from the boogey man at the expense of our civil liberties. Remember what Ben Franklin said, "those willing to give up essential liberties for security deserve and will receive neither."

I see your rather rotund but brilliant statesman and raise you another rather rotund but brilliant statesman. One who understands a thing or two about the true price of war......

"Never, never, never believe any war will be smooth and easy, or that anyone who embarks on the strange voyage can measure the tides and hurricanes he will encounter. The statesman who yields to war fever must realize that once the signal is given, he is no longer the master of policy but the slave of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events."

    • No administration will get rid of the patriot act until the people make them. It offers so much to the administration in terms of information and power. What politician doesn't want more of each? I'm not sure who is distributing that petition, but if there isn't an alternative it is worth signing.

    • It absolutely blows my mind that as a country we let this happen. While I used to think that we were a nation filled only with scared stupid people following a government and become frustrated, It's now more frustrating to see how many people know what's going on, feel what's going on, and talk about how wrong our system is.
There is not enough resistance when it comes to situations like these, all of us should be doing something rather than sitting around and commenting on how corrupt this is. I'm no better, I'm doing the same thing.
We are living in a modern Revolutionary era. This is when we should stand up and take advantage of the paper that states a government is for the people and when it's not for the people the people hold the right to over-throw the unfit government. This is where we are at; no politician, senator, candidate, is going to make a difference. No one, at this point in time is going to walk in there and change this nation and to think so is a dream.
What we need is an Extreme Home Makeover: America. It needs to be torn down and it needs to be rebuilt. A petition is not going to fix all the problems and devious little "ins and outs" of our current regime.
There are so many of us that if we collectively just stopped responding to the system and authority, it would change, it would have to change. This needs to be met on a bigger scale because what they are doing is over taking us on a much larger scale.
I love what this country was built and founded on, but what we are living now is controlled freedom, and that is an oxymoron.
At this point I just feel it's so obvious between the fueling of the celebrity obsession and "RUN IT'S A TERRORIST" theory, they are keeping our minds busy while they run them.
I really, really hope petition or no petition, if this passes, that we as a people will not let this ride and go about our daily lives. I truly hope this is a beginning of something big, at that we can take back our rights, and construct an order that is fit, fair, and thrives among the people.

The Obama administration is working hard with Harry Reid (senate majority leader) and Nancy Pelosi (speaker of the house) to sneak it through.

(By the way, fullcd, this response isn't really for you -- it's for all the people on here who actually believe Obama is pro-liberty and against the Patriot Act.)

It is free. You just have to select your state, type your name, email and zip code and it will be sent to your two reps in the senate. The fact that you made it to the donations page means you signed it and it went through. So all is good.
