US Christians want to jail homosexuals

Image

US Christians want to jail homosexuals. It seems ludicrous in the 21st century, but some mainstream Christian organizations want to criminalize homosexual behavior in order to prevent legal recognition of gay marriage and the repeal of the US military's "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy.

      By SHARON UNDERWOOD
For the Valley News (White River Junction, VT)

Many letters have been sent to the Valley News concerning the homosexual menace in Vermont. I am the mother of a gay son and I've taken enough from you good people.

I'm tired of your foolish rhetoric about the "homosexual agenda" and your allegations that accepting homosexuality is the same thing as advocating sex with children. You are cruel and ignorant. You have been robbing me of the joys of motherhood ever since my children were tiny.

My firstborn son started suffering at the hands of the moral little thugs from your moral, upright families from the time he was in the first grade. He was physically and verbally abused from first grade straight through high school because he was perceived to be gay.

He never professed to be gay or had any association with anything gay, but he had the misfortune not to walk or have gestures like the other boys. He was called "fag" incessantly, starting when he was 6.

In high school, while your children were doing what kids that age should be doing, mine labored over a suicide note, drafting and redrafting it to be sure his family knew how much he loved them. My sobbing 17-year-old tore the heart out of me as he choked out that he just couldn't bear to continue living any longer, that he didn't want to be gay and that he couldn't face a life without dignity.

You have the audacity to talk about protecting families and children from the homosexual menace, while you yourselves tear apart families and drive children to despair. I don't know why my son is gay, but I do know that God didn't put him, and millions like him, on this Earth to give you someone to abuse. God gave you brains so that you could think, and it's about time you started doing that.

At the core of all your misguided beliefs is the belief that this could never happen to you, that there is some kind of subculture out there that people have chosen to join. The fact is that if it can happen to my family, it can happen to yours, and you won't get to choose. Whether it is genetic or whether something occurs during a critical time of fetal development, I don't know. I can only tell you with an absolute certainty that it is inborn.

If you want to tout your own morality, you'd best come up with something more substantive than your heterosexuality. You did nothing to earn it; it was given to you. If you disagree, I would be interested in hearing your story, because my own heterosexuality was a blessing I received with no effort whatsoever on my part. It is so woven into the very soul of me that nothing could ever change it. For those of you who reduce sexual orientation to a simple choice, a character issue, a bad habit or something that can be changed by a 10-step program, I'm puzzled. Are you saying that your own sexual orientation is nothing more than something you have chosen, that you could change it at will? If that's not the case, then why would you suggest that someone else can?

A popular theme in your letters is that Vermont has been infiltrated by outsiders. Both sides of my family have lived in Vermont for generations. I am heart and soul a Vermonter, so I'll thank you to stop saying that you are speaking for "true Vermonters."

You invoke the memory of the brave people who have fought on the battlefield for this great country, saying that they didn't give their lives so that the "homosexual agenda" could tear down the principles they died defending. My 83-year-old father fought in some of the most horrific battles of World War II, was wounded and awarded the Purple Heart.

He shakes his head in sadness at the life his grandson has had to live. He says he fought alongside homosexuals in those battles, that they did their part and bothered no one. One of his best friends in the service was gay, and he never knew it until the end, and when he did find out, it mattered not at all. That wasn't the measure of the man.

You religious folk just can't bear the thought that as my son emerges from the hell that was his childhood he might like to find a lifelong companion and have a measure of happiness. It offends your sensibilities that he should request the right to visit that companion in the hospital, to make medical decisions for him or to benefit from tax laws governing inheritance.

How dare he? you say. These outrageous requests would threaten the very existence of your family, would undermine the sanctity of marriage.

You use religion to abdicate your responsibility to be thinking human beings. There are vast numbers of religious people who find your attitudes repugnant. God is not for the privileged majority, and God knows my son has committed no sin.

The deep-thinking author of a letter to the April 12 Valley News who lectures about homosexual sin and tells us about "those of us who have been blessed with the benefits of a religious upbringing" asks: "What ever happened to the idea of striving . . . to be better human beings than we are?"

Indeed, sir, what ever happened to that?

Sharon Underwood's e-mail is: sundervt@hotmail.com. I had the chance to speak with her yesterday. Her son is doing fine now, the first in his family to graduate from college.

If you have friends who think Jesus would have been a Republican -- on the side of billionaire Pat Robertson, et al, in opposing Hate Crimes Legislation, opposing the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, and, yes, opposing Vermont's extension of economic benefits to same-sex couples -- please feel free to forward this column to as many of them as you like. Can't you just see it? Jesus arm-in-arm with the NRA trying to maintain the gun-show loophole? Stumping the Holy Land in favor of a massive tax cut for the rich, while opposing a hike in the minimum wage? Somehow, I think not.

Wow. I lived in White River Junction in the 80s and it saddens me that Ms. Underwood's son did not find the happy little misfit brigade that I was part of. For the two years I went to Hartford High School, the weird kids, the unattractive, the gay and anyone else not deemed acceptable by the elite were way welcome in the misfit brigade. We had 3 mostly uncloseted gay boys and at least 4 that were of questionable sexuality, but no one in the group cared.

Yes, we all lived under a supposedly Christian community and we had trouble with narrow minded assholes, but we had each other and we stuck up for each other. I am saddened to see that our unofficial group did not continue.

Didn't you hear? The community has already organized to take back all the symbols of hate that were used against them. Taking ownership of the symbols, words, and slogans takes their power away to offend us. So go ahead call us faggots or queers, or issue us pink stars, whatever. We are invincible.

All you can do is take our breath away, torture us, mame us, and shame us but you cannot erase our identity anymore.

    • Here is the bottom line folks. These Christians are terrified because they see that homosexuals will finally have equal rights to theirs. This is terrifying to them because deep down inside they feel guilty about all of the horrific things that have been done to homosexuals throughout the past 2000 years in the name of their Lord and Savior. Payback can be a bitch.

    • Gays are hot! Who wouldn't want to bathe with one? And do you know what a status symbol it is to have a gay friend to go shopping with? Very chic.
To suggest jailing them is unthinkable. I hope I never live to see this happen, but if it does, I will be up in arms before the day ends. We're supposed to be moving forward people. What does it matter what people do in the bedroom, and you may say something about the showers, and I'll tell you I've never heard of gays molesting straights in showers outside of prison, so sending them to prison is a really, really, staggeringly stupid idea because you will turn them from creepy person to professional butt fucker.

We have the same problem in Italy except we already have the Church's nose in every politic affair. As soon as some law about marriage appears some cardinals start saying that the christian principles must be defended, we still have movies prohibited and censored by the Church can you believe that? Not a lot of movies but as soon as there is one that gives a too rough impression of the Church (Some crazy historians say that priests used to burn women and massacre people) the movie can't get into Italy.

People who claim that homosexuality is a choice have made a choice themselves, in spite of their secret lustful passions to get it on with hot guys and the fact that they get a woody watching sports, to pretend that they are normal and attack others for what comes naturally. They justify their hatred and bigotry by wearing Morality as a blanket.

At least 70% of people who hate homosexuals themselves are terrified that they too are homosexual because of how their bodies react. Of course its all camouflaged under the clothes.

He makes me ashamed to be an American, Catholic and U.S. Soldier. We are risking our lives so that hopefully everyone can enjoy basic human rights...EVERYONE....even assholes like Mr. Sprigg. Save all the your fighting for Big Business and the Military Industrial Complex, I don't want to hear it. If Homosexuals are forced to pay equal taxes and expected to be held to the same standards as the rest of society they not only deserve but earned equal rights. I am not surprise he wants to jail Homosexuals, prisons are huge money makers and with the majority of minorities now fighting overseas, the prison need more meat.........

Besides, defining "public homosexuality" is a slippery slope. If I were to hug my female friend and kiss her on the cheek , would that be considered "public homosexuality"? What about wearing rainbows? A t-shirt with a pro-gay message? Pride parades? It could dissolve into a gay witch-hunt.

I will agree with Ibrake4rappers13 that public homosexuality should be made illegal, if he agree that Mexicans shouldn't be allowed to be Mexicans in public in the United States. It can also follows the same logic, you don't want your kids exposed to homosexuality, I might not want my kids exposed to the crap that stereotypical crime stricken latino's bring into this nation.

Now I'm going to make sure I point this out. I do not really have this viewpoint on anyone of Hispanic decent, nor Hispanics as a whole. However, my mock argument and justification, no matter how offensive, is just as valid as the justification you used for your argument.

Gee, I would agree with you and all, but the genetic component that determines people to be homosexual has been discovered. In some cases people do choose to swear off the opposite sex and try to be attracted to people of the same sex; however, in most cases people who are gay are born with a gene that makes them attracted to people of the same gender.

So people aren't animals and you believe in mind over matter?

If you believe in mind over matter, can you change the color of your eyes if you try hard enough? Can you make your hair fall out or grow faster with the power of your mind? Can you make yourself taller with the power of your brain? Those might be a bit off from what we're talking about. Let me try a slightly different approach. Can you smell cyanide? Some people can, but not many. It is something that they can do because of their DNA. If you don't have the gene, it doesn't matter how hard you try, you can't smell it. In a similar fashion, if you can smell it then you will smell it, unless you plug your nose, but that's cheating. Now for another hypothetical question, if it's not genetic, prove it. Why don't you try to become sexually attracted to another person of the same sex then go back? It doesn't really work.

Now moving back to the people aren't animals. Yes, we are. Take away all of the comforts, the guarantee of food, shelter, warmth, and the other basic needs for survival and people act will act like animals, and they will do that for a very simple reason, because people are animals.

Finally, yes, some people are ingrained at a very young age to be things. Homosexual is not really one of them, but being a pedophile is. Most pedophiles were sexually abused as children. Some children were sexually abused by homosexuals and as a result became pedophiles when they grew up. They didn't turn outright into homosexuals when they grew up, they turned into pedophiles. Now, homosexuals are not pedophiles by definition. However, particularly in the Catholic Church, homosexuals were turned into priests to prevent them from ever having their sinful sex, or any sex for that matter. The problem is, just because someone is homosexual or strait, doesn't mean that they have the discipline to become a priest who will give up sex. Well you can't go proposition another fully grown man as a Catholic priest, so who is left to you? For people with poor self control who were forced to be priests, it was arguably a choice, but it was more a lack of options.

Oh, about the anal penetration and how it can benefit you. Anal penetration is the quickest way to stimulate the prostate, which usually produces more powerful orgasms. No I've never tried, but I do have a powerful thirst for knowledge and I have access to the internet. You might be surprised what you can find if you look stuff up out of curiosity. FYI, you should be more concerned about that for any kids you might have than homosexuality.

Two flaws with that little argument. First, we're talking about homosexuality, something that is proven to have a genetic cause. There aren't really any genes that make people hard for animals, or at least none have been discovered.

Second, just about all bestiality in the sense that you are implying involves the animal receiving. The topic has so far been shaped towards the taking it in the ass by a willing male human. What makes your bestiality argument invalid at this specific point is that we are talking about, or at least I assumed we were talking about, consensual sex. An animal can't consent so rape is implied.

I think you are possibly bi-sexual or just ignorant of the truth. For one to believe that homosexuality is a choice, one must either be able to imagine themselves choosing homosexuality, or be ignorant of the conclusion that logically follows from the fact that one is unable to choose homosexuality based on a negative emotional/instinctual reaction to the idea of having sex with the same gender.

If one feels naturally repulsed by homosexuality, then it's not a choice. We do not choose our feelings. Do you choose who you love like a robot would - go over the list of pros and cons and make a rational decision to love the person who has the most pros? OR does one just fall in love whether they want to or not? Love is an instinct. All emotions are instincts.

Can you imagine yourself having gay sex? If not, how does it make you feel. If you're like me, the idea of gay sex does not turn you on. Why? Is it because you made a rational choice? If the idea of yourself having gay sex does turn you on but you choose not to give in to those temptations then -- and only then -- does your assertion that homosexuality is a choice make any sense whatsoever, or rather what would make sense is that you THINK homosexuality is a choice. It is not a choice for me. I am heterosexual. I cannot explain my attraction to the female body -- it just happens naturally.

I love Italian food. Why do I love Italian food? Is it a choice. Hey, I guess today I'll stop liking Italian food and start liking eating dog poop. Why not? Feelings are a choice right? No. Is it possible to make the choice to love the taste of dog poop? No. One does not choose what they like and do not like, they only react to those feelings.

Here's my take on you. You WANT homosexuality to be a choice. That is why you assert it even in the face of all logic and reason and scientific research. You like to look at the world as black & white, good vs evil, etc... It is a very primitive world view, but it comforts a certain type of person to be that way.

Either that or your are a closeted homosexual and you naively feel shame for it.

      Good luck figuring it out.

Until you have been penetrated anally you would never understand the pleasure it is. Another tremendously pleasurable thing is to use your tongue to tease the anus. There are hundreds of thousands of nerve endings in the whole region from the anus to the scrotum and all around the penis.

If god intended for people not to use their anus for pleasure, why would he make it so packed with pleasure sensitive nerve endings?

I know straight guys who love to have their girlfriend penetrate their anus and directly stimulate their prostate. It makes them ejaculate with greater force and with a greater content of semen.

Well whats good for the goose is good for the gander.....

What I think is sick is the relentless posting of comparing homosexuality to a thief, bestiality, unnatural, immoral, illegal, evil, child molesting, etc. that bible thumping Tea bagging people hammer home day in and day out. All I hear coming from the Tea Bagging right is how the homos and the Illegal Latinos are ruining this "god fearing" nation.

Frankly I have been fucked up the ass with that bullshit enough, its not fun, and they aren't using any lube. Its called a dry fuck up the ass, and it might as well be with a broomstick like the way heterosexual cops would do to a gay person of color.

From now on I am going to fight fire with fire, or in this case offense with offense, because that is what it has come down to here, a game called "who can be the most offensive."
