IRAN: GOVERNMENT IS GOD?

Tehran, Iran -- An Iranian court has sentenced one person to death and eight others to prison for their parts in anti-government demonstrations in December, the semi-official Fars news agency reported Tuesday.
[...]
* Eight others sentenced to prison for roles in December protests
* The nine have been convicted of "waging war against God"
* Two men already have been executed for participating in anti-government demonstrations
[...]
The nine people tried last week were convicted of conspiracy against the government and "waging war against God," an extremely serious charge that some Iranian lawmakers have pushed to carry an automatic death penalty. All can appeal their sentences, Fars reported.
[...]
In January, authorities hanged Mohammed Reza Ali Zamani, 37, and Arash Rahmanipour, 20, who had been convicted of being enemies of God and plotting to topple the Islamic regime.

So, those accused of attempting to topple an Islamic regime makes them "enemies of God?"
... That sounds very much to me that it is the Islamic view that government is God, and God is government... am I missing something here?

Iran obstructing links to outside world; (CNN) -- Iranian authorities have imposed a virtual information blockade after opposition leaders issued a call for supporters to take to the streets during an important government anniversary on Thursday
      [...]
Residents of the Iranian capital said Wednesday that text messages on many messaging services have been blocked and Internet speeds have slowed to a crawl.
The Internet "comes on only a few minutes each day, but you never know when," one Iranian wrote in an e-mail to CNN, which he said took seven hours to send. "This has been going on for more than four days now. I contacted my Internet provider and they said it is out of their control."
More ominously, human rights groups and opposition Web sites have reported widespread arrests targeting journalists.
According to the Paris-based journalism watchdog Reporters Without Borders, at least eight journalists were arrested Sunday and Monday, bringing the total number of reporters now in prison to at least 65.
      [...]
"Our phones are strictly followed and controlled," said one young Iranian who participated in past protests, during a phone conversation from Tehran. Speaking on condition of anonymity, the Iranian said that for the first time the satellite television signals in his neighborhood had been jammed.

Yes, it appears that in Iran, the Government IS God !

    • That's the problem with theocracies, the opium of the people becomes the opium of the government. They can make any laws they feel will protect their regime, and it automatically becomes the law of god. Even if it involves executions to those who appose it.

I think what we are seeing here is the beginnings of an enlightenment. There are a lot of people in Iran, some 72 million, many are well educated and worldly, and are getting tired of this theocratic bullshit. Why else would there be so many "anti-government" demonstrations?

I just don't see Iran being the aggressor. They have nothing to benefit from an outright attack on U.S. interests. Yes, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is as crazy as they come but Ali Hoseyni Khāmene’ and the Council of Guardians control all the real power. The only military threats from Iran in the near future (not counting their active support of terrorism.) is if Israel attacks first or Iran gets up hot and bothered by the increasing oil production in Afghanistan's southern region which provides a faster route of crude oil to China.

Yes, 'we' don't think that way, but our top security people did, and even told GWB about it before 9/11

But being the decider he is, he chose to ignore that warning. He though it would be better to just let it happen and leverage the emotional fall-out.

He did the EXACT same thing (ignore warnings from senior advisors) for hurricane Katrina will somewhat less useful effect.

Talk about high crimes and misdemeanors!

How would they know specific targets? I couldn't believe the flight instructors at the schools the terrorists learned to fly, but didn't want to learn to land, had not said something to someone in control......maybe they did and no one listened? I'd like to know some other ways you think terrorists might cause problems but not on such an open forum....I sometimes think people get ideas in media....

    • Totalitarianism! Total control by the one government of all aspects of everyones lives!
Our USA government is headed that direction. It is growing bigger and bigger until we can no longer question it, it will have complete control.....
Then it, too, will be GOD!

Amen to that, we must become more aware of our march in that direction. Even Barack's comment that the Republicans had eight years now it's time to shut up and let us get something done. Stop....I am not Republican.......I voted for Barack..........even so, that's a scary direction to take.

Yes, B.O. has ASKED the Repubs to quiet down. That's a road to totalitarianism.

GWB, however, was far more effective on that path with 9/11 "your either with us or agin us" -- And we, as good citizens, took it in the ass. That's a road to totalitarianism I'd rather not go down again. If we don't get something done ASAP. We will get more as teh Dems cut their own political throats.

One of the first things Bush did was increase the size of government with the Homeland Security office! He could have just had the current CIA and FBI work together and more efficiently, instead! He, also, took more freedom away with the Patriot Act. SO he's on my fecal roster!

Yes, quite true. Sorry about your bad experience.

On the other hand, any Gansta could do much of these things: illegally, of course, but the effect to me is nearly the same. My recourse would be the police or the courts. Neither of which give me the warm fuzzy feeling.

There is no safety. Only the "appearance" of safety. And that appearance is the opium that keeps us from rebelling. Yes?

You, apparently were no longer needed to do your job and thus those in control 'got rid' of you by leaving you unable to fight them or theirs. I am truly sorry for your 'beating' at their hands. I hope you are getting through alright now. My prayers are with you.
My husband and I are experiencing the beating a small, honest business man gets when he doesn't play the game....and just wants to make an honest living for his family by providing a great service and product to his customers without gouging them, or lying to them. He's an expert in his field of sales and can help customers do their jobs better, because he has experience in their field and knows how to get the job done right.
I have been saying our government has been growing in control of the citizens, as well, as making the lowest income people complacent by removing their urge to build a cohesive unit of a family. People used to be proud to work hard to earn something in this country. Now a large group just keep voting in the ones that promise them 'something for nothing'. And we all know nothing IS free, it always comes at a price.
As for the patriot act, before it was made a written law the government ran covert operations to find and end threats against our country. Now with all the BS laws they can fight the war against honest freedom loving and law abiding citizens. It's shameless....

      I totally agree.
I am a revolutionary period buff. I read and collect things related to that period. 'Am a 'student' of all things relevant to Thomas Jefferson. Including his hate for what he knew the Federalists would do to destroy this country from within.
Washington begged the men; Jefferson, Madison and Hamilton; to quit fighting as it made us appear weak to the stronger, older countries. AND in the end Jefferson acquiesced and allowed Hamilton his 'Machine' to have the county's capital close to Jefferson's home state rather than in New York or New England.
Constitution scholars have been watering down the constitution ever since it's inception. In fact many of our twentieth century Presidents did much damage to the freedom of the people by having them trust and rely on 'big brother' government. Entitlements destabilize the actual institutes individuals value, making people reliant on the government for help and solutions.

    • Perhaps they were not insinuating that they were God. It is most likely they would never stoop God to such a low label, but they feel they are actually doing God's work. Now tell me, the God that comes to mind is a not warring, hateful, and close minded God. It must tell you alot for which God they are referring.

    • Iran is a paradox, claiming to be a democratic Islamic republic with “supposedly free elections”. The so called elected government which includes a Parliament, President, Judicial System (which is appointed by the Supreme Leader…no not the President or Parliament and follows strict Shi’a Islamic law)…of course the election are suppose to be free but women are not allowed to vote. Not that it really would have made a difference since the Supreme Leader and Council of Guardians made sure that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won in a 97% land slide (he is really a great guy, once you get pass the fact he denies the existences of homosexuals in Iran and the holocaust, supports terrorist organizations world wide and of course doesn’t let himself get bogged down with such things as human rights. The Parliament is if it at possible has less power then East Asscrack Junior High’s students’ government. Also all potential members of Parliament must be approved by the shady “Guardian Council” who are of course religious leaders appointed by his divine grace the Supreme Leader. The Judicial System is a labyrinth of complicated and medieval law guided by Shi’a Islamic law and is overseen by Minister of Justice and other clerics an noted by the Supreme Leader, himself…acting out his stern, religious, perverted form of Islamic justice. The Supreme Leader is responsible for delineation and supervision of the general policies of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Supreme Leader is Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, controls the military intelligence and security operations; and has sole power to declare war or peace. He controls the Iran’s constitution, it’s laws, the way the Iranian people live, work, play, pray and MOST TIMPORTANTLY THINK!......... Ali Hoseyni Khāmene’I the Supreme Leader and his hand picked Council of Elders control all aspects of Iranian culture, government, religion and foreign policy. While its true Iran is second in both natural gas and oil production it’s populace lead lives of empty poverty. Iran once know as Persia was the ancient world’s bright beacon of education, art, literature and medicine. Unfortunately now it is an oppressive, aggressive, fanatical, theocratic government hurling head long and reckless developing a nuclear war program and a divine desire to be “THE” super power in the Middle East. So, now nothing but a complete act of kindness and compassion from the Leadership of Iran can surprise me.

The picture right below the subject shows how a demonstrator is kicking a member of anti-rebel forces. I would like to see what would happen if someone did the same to an LAPD officer, here, in LA!

The propaganda machinery of the US is hard at work to show Iran as an aggressor which is threatening the peace and security of the world and its own people. In reality that is based on no factual evidence.

The US, with its short history of civilization but consistent war activities across the world - causing hundreds of thousands of death in Iraq and now busy doing the same in Afghanistan has always tried to find one or more adversaries - to keep its defense contractors busy with lucrative contracts. When I first came to this country, it was crying about Russians and Chinese, then North Korea, Syria, Iraq and now Iran.

Iran is a country with proven and long history of civilization. It has not started any wars and has not engaged in any, unless imposed upon. The nuclear technology that they have discovered would make no sense for them to be used for aggressive military purposes, but for defensive purposes is necessary and so is all the advances that they have made in military arsenal in recent years.

Ill intention toward the US can only be dealt with with modification of failing US foreign policies - the policies that are not fair and even-handed in the eyes of the world.

"I would like to see what would happen if someone did the same to an LAPD officer, here, in LA!" --

Well, we HAVE had a share of riots in Los Angeles (1965, 1992) and there was a lot of kicking. The reaction by the government was adaptive. That is, the government took steps to lower the stress level of the population -- things like changes in police procedures, more social services, etc.

What are the changes in Iran regarding the post election rage? Is the reaction one of adaptation or suppression?

      -------------------------------------------------
On the other topic, of the west's unrestrained corporate take-over of world cultures, you are quite right. It seems the US (as well as europe, Japan, South Korea, and now China) gives the world the following choice: "You are going to buy our Big Mac's or our bombs -- Take Your Pick"

That's nasty. Corporations are too powerful, yes. Governments are too powerful, yes. Both Iranian and western.

But are they God? Everything is God. Even corporations and governments and dog poop.
