"ALBANY — The New York State Senate on Tuesday night expelled a senator convicted of assaulting his companion, the first time a member of the Legislature was forced from office in nearly a century.

Hiram Monserrate, a Democrat from Queens, was convicted last fall of misdemeanor assault after a fight with his companion, Karla Giraldo, that left her with a deep gash on her face, though he was acquitted of more serious felony assault charges."

    • I never thought that Monserrate's slicing of his girlfriend's face with a broken glass was accidental. That the guy subsequently claims that this incident increased his understanding of domestic violence does not make logical sense. If he was not abusing his girlfriend, there is no domestic violence to understand.

Having said that, New York State STILL does not have a budget for the year 2010 thanks to the dithering by the useless state legislature. We need a Constitutional conventions to abolish the state Senate, curtail the power of the Speaker of the Assembly, establish an independent ethics commission with subpoena power to investigate and an independent commission in charge of redistricting. We cannot continue to endure the unendurable and tolerate the intolerable.
