Why the U.S. will fail in Afghanistan

Afghan president, Hamid Karzai's connections to warlords is questioned

In an insightful article about the U.S.-led strategy in Afghanistan, Afghan scholar Nasir Shansab, explains why the current plan spearheaded by Richard Holbrooke and Bruce Riedel is ultimately flawed.

He writes that both Holbrooke and Riedel are delusional in thinking that continuing to work with President Karzai will result in a lawful and democratic future. Karzai, according to Shansab, surrounds himself with warlords and ineffectual cronies who are skimming enormous amounts of funds meant for domestic development.

Unless Holbrooke and Riedel are willing to restart the process of rebuilding Afghanistan, without President Karzai, Shansab sees no escape from the current corruption led by the warlords.

    • Even I know that Karzai is expendable and that the Warlords are the key to victory in Afghanistan. Once the Tailiban is pacified it will be simple to pit the various warlords against each other and set up whatever proxy puppet government we want......
