CBS bans ads calling for marijuana legalization

The fifteen-second ad, which asserts that taxing and regulating the adult use and sale of marijuana would raise ‘billions of dollars in national revenue, was scheduled to appear on CBS’s 42nd Street digital billboard beginning on Monday, February 1, 2010.
Representatives from Neutron Media approached NORML in mid-January about placing the ad, which was scheduled to air 18 times per day for a two-month period. The NORML Foundation entered into a contractual agreement with Neutron Media to air two separate NORML advertisements, and produced an initial ad exclusively for broadcast on the CBS digital billboard.
Days after NORML’s submitted the ad, the organization received the following e-mail, dated February 3, from a representative from Neutron Media stated: “I just received word from CBS and they will not approve your ad. If CBS changes their morals we will let you know.”
NORML’s 15-second animated advertisement is available online here.
Commenting on CBS’ last minute rejection of the ad, NORML Foundation Executive Allen St. Pierre said,
“Major media corporations like CBS have no problem airing programming that allows them to profit off the public’s interest in marijuana and marijuana law reform, such as Showtime’s hit series Weeds and the CBSnews.com online series ‘Marijuana Nation.’
Yet these same corporate entities balk at airing media that calls on reforming America’s criminal marijuana policies – policies that have led directly to the arrest of over 20 million Americans since 1965.
How can advocates be expected to change these failed policies when those that control America’s airwaves refuse to allow them a public forum to voice their point of view?”
According to the results of a December 2009 Angus Reid survey, fifty-three percent of Americans now support legalizing marijuana.
St. Pierre continued: “University studies show that regulating the adult use of marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol would raise over $30 billion annually in new tax revenue, while saving an addition $15 billion per year in law enforcement costs. The content of NORML’s ad is based on sound, readily identifiable data. Moreover, the message of NORML’s advertisement is supported by a majority of the public. CBS’ denial of this ad spot is based on the company’s political and cultural bias and nothing more.”
Last summer NORML entered into negotiations with CBS to launch a live Saturday night radio broadcast on the corporation’s ChatAboutIt.com talk radio network. CBS representatives initially agreed to the programming, but then abruptly canceled the contract after NORML had raised the funding to produce its first show.
In 2009, the NORML Foundation launched the first-ever nationwide television ad campaign calling for the regulation of marijuana by adults. The Foundation purchased over 7,700 ad buys on prominent cable networks like CNBC, Fox News, G4, and FX. The ad campaign did not air on any CBS-affiliated networks.
Last week, moderators of a February 1 live YouTube debate with President Barack Obama failed to ask any questions regarding marijuana policy, even though the topic was the top vote getter on the website’s Citizen Tube/State of the Union poll.

what are the networks afraid of? why not just accept the ad, and post a disclaimer if they feel it is necessary? are they afraid that people will boycott their dumb 'reality shows', or 'crime shows', or 'dramedy shows'? in just the past month we have seen the networks refuse 'right to choose', 'man-dating', and 'pot ads'. other outlets simply go forward, and say something like 'the above does not represent this network...or people living or dead'.' we have to stop eating their crap.

First they break their policy for not airing controversial ads during the super bowl to allow an anti-choice ad. Now they are banning marijuana ads. Also, IndictBushNow.org is reporting that CBS (who has the contract for the placement of bus ads in D.C.) is rejecting their anti-bush/anti-torture bus ads. Although IndictBushNow.org had been working with CBS for weeks, CBS has decided to change their minds. CBS seems to be on a crusade to promote one particular (conservative) view point and to silence the opposition, with the obvious intention of swaying public political opinions through ignorance, in a sneaky sort of way.
CBS is actively trying to dumb people down, by silencing the sides of arguments that do not align with their own political agenda. People should keep this in mind in case they choose not to do business with mega-corporations that intentionally keep people ignorant. Ignorance is the single biggest threat to any democratic process. Those who do not like large corporations to decide for us how we should feel politically should boycott CBS.

while that is true, current TV is supposed to be a station that doesnt sensor what is really happening in the world today. and this last minute flip flop is something pretty big because this is denying people a form of education on a subject they have been ill informed about.
so i think current TV should be on top of this... i also think NORML should have came to current TV to put out marijuana law reform ads.
current is a station that is also supposed to be one of the ways peoples voices get out to the public and mainstream media. so lets all talk to current about how we feel about marijuana law reform... its gonna take all of us to get anything done, remember there is strength in numbers.
my question is, are any of those ads going to get air time? if so on what channels.

All that is fine till it goes againest main stream. Then they won't touch it with a ten foot pole. Other wise we would get the truth about what is really happening. Big Pharm and the cotten industry would take a big hit. Not to mention what it would do to the State Corections Facelaty. There are people getting filthy rich off of pot smokers. Not to mention the fact that the Goverment would have to admit they lied to us for what fifty or sixty years now. Current Is not going to buck the system very hard. There would be to much back lash.

now that is completely true. im glad you agree with me on that aspect.
but that is still no excuse for allowing this horrible injustice to continue unchecked. we as the people have to make our voices heard by means that the mainstream media cannot control and the best way to do that is word of mouth.
BUT, if the people get their point across to current then current TV will get the idea that many of its viewers are pro legalization, and they would have to investigate the matter of cannabis prohibition further. these shows about the narco state and the criminal aspect of the marijuana trade does cannabis no justice.
im just saying im tired of people being afraid of the govt. and big crop's, we will never get anything done if they fear the opposition. i want to bring this matter of cannabis prohibition straight to the people of the world. and whats worse is that most corporations dont fear the opposition, they just get paid to basically blow us off.

CBS was willing to run a pro-life ad during the Superbowl but is unwilling to run a NORML ad. Either everything should be allowed or none of it. I know the two issues are seperate, but it's like the TV networks are saying it's okay to be an activist- just so long as it fits a certain social and moral mold that their shareholders approve of. just another case of the mainstream media telling us what to think. TV rots your brain in the first place, maybe this will give people an excuse to shut it off and go make a difference.

So just because I don't agree with you, and I'm sick of seeing this crap everywere, now I'm closed minded, eh? It's people like you who are the problem. You just can't comprehend why someone would NOT want to smoke it. You probably think there's aboslutely no negative side effects too, huh?
And what about those people in jail? They deserve to be there. Not for smoking marijuana, but for BREAKING THE LAW! Don't you think it looks bad when most of your supporters are in jail? If you want to change the laws, you abide by them until you win. You retain the moral high-ground. Not by disregarding them and BAWWWing about it when your ass gets caught. All those "poor, innocent" people in jail aren't helping your case, they're hurting it.
Just so you know, I am leaning somewhat for the legalization of marijuana. Not because i want to waste my life on it, but because I believe that you fuckers should be able to do with your body what the hell you want to. But because I support your cause doesn't mean I want to hear about it every five minutes. Matter of fact, the more I get pestered about it, the less I support it. I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels that way.

So then why did you click the link for this news story if you are so sick of hearing about it?
"You just can't comprehend why someone would NOT want to smoke it."
What gave you that idea? It's asinine and baseless.
"You probably think there's aboslutely no negative side effects too, huh?"
It's easier to pick on me when you try to cram me into that straw-man suit huh? I don't think that. I think, of course, that the reefer-madness claims that people will go insane murderous rampages, that it kills brain cells, that smoking one joint equals a whole pack of cigs are false. I also think that it's far safer than alcohol or cigs. Why? Because there are scientific studies showing that information. I like facts, not propaganda.
"And what about those people in jail? They deserve to be there. Not for smoking marijuana, but for BREAKING THE LAW!"
Now I don't have to apologize for calling you closed-minded. Is the only view that you have is blind obedience to authority? Does one's own morals not count? Should people waste their one and only lives doing absolutely everything they're told without any regard to their own beliefs? What if our leaders base some laws on lies and propaganda? Should we obey all of them blindly? That would be closed-minded. That's the definition of a sheep, blind obedience.
These people who are in jail are victims of ignorance and lies. They do not deserve to be there. Blind obedience is NOT the moral high ground. Only someone who is closed-minded enough to think of laws as dogma would think that it is. I'm not saying you're generally closed-minded. I only mean it in context.
"I am leaning somewhat for the legalization of marijuana"
Good, now I can call you open-minded in this context. Supporting a cause for which you yourself will not benefit is open-minded.
However...
"the more I get pestered about it, the less I support it"
who's coming to you? You're the one clicking on the headline and making comments. I'm just responding to your comment. A helpful hint for you might be to not click on links for news stories for which you have no interest.

Every one of my friends who smoke, people I work with, adds on the internet, stories on current, articles in the fucking paper, spam in my email, texts on my phone, people standing by the road with signs advocating marijuana. I do NOT need ads on the tv too. I mean, is it so fucking bad that I'm sick and tired hearing about this god damn issue?

Did you know that in some states its still illegal for a black person to marry a white person and judges are denying marriage to interracial couples? Just because a law is on the books doesn't make it a fair or just law.

A boycott sounds like a good idea to me. CBS survives via sponsor. Sponsors survive via us. If people who disagree with the 'war on cannabis' would boycott CBS and let their sponsors know why, maybe they would change. But, I doubt it, the big bucks come from anti-cannabis supporters. Corporations are the ones who benefit from prohibition and the elimination of a natural competitor.
In America, money is the only voice, which gets heard. The recent actions of the Supreme court, gave them the ability to SCREAM and no one will be the wiser. 'Move along, nothing to see here' will continue until we find a way to SCREAM back!

its called tunnel vision, cynker, in obamaisajoke's case
imagine a train going through a dark tunnel
the train can see the light at the end of the tunnel, but the light is only a pinprick in the dark, the train is not even sure what might be illuminated by the light or what possibilities it may hold, but the train is certain the light is there, and its destination is somewhere beyond
the train can not go off its tracks, it is on a set course for the duration of its journey and cannot change
the train also has a dim headlight that partially illuminates the walls of the tunnel around it, making its view somewhat "open"
the walls and headlight mean almost nothing to the train though, its focus is entirely on the light and nothing else, the lights existence is the only thing the train is sure of, all other possibilities and plausibilities, especially the wall, the dark, and the things illuminated in the light frighten the train, because after all, it is a machine with a one track mind (no pun intended) - 2 years ago
