Jamie Oliver calls for overhaul of America's Food System

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver on Wednesday called for an overhaul of America's food system, saying the country's poor decisions about what to eat are shortening life spans and increasing health care costs.

"My wish is for you to have a strong, sustainable movement to educate every child about food, to inspire families to cook again and to empower people everywhere to fight obesity," he said in a speech at the TED Conference in Long Beach, California.

Oliver, who grew up working in his father's pub and restaurant in Essex, England, outlined a number of specific steps to help America get back to local and fresh foods and to combat obesity. Among them, he said:

• Every child in the U.S. should learn to cook 10 meals before leaving high school.

• Supermarkets should appoint "food ambassadors" to explain to customers how they can prepare local, fresh and seasonal foods.

• Food companies should make education a central part of their business.

• Food labeling should be improved to accurately warn people about unhealthy food. He called America's current food-labeling system a "farce."

    • well actually most food decisions are related to complex factors two of which are taste and cost. The latter has more of an effect on poor people, hence why there are few morbidly obese rich people wandering the states. So this talk of "educating" the consumer might work on those who can afford the drive to trader joes...
On top of that our fda in cohorts with the food industries is really designed as a loose subsidy to fill the pockets of the industrial food industry particularly through the subsidization of corn for use in corn syrup. So yea a snickers bar is cheap and organic lettuce cost 1.80 per pound again the poor eat shit literally.
There's also the issue of our psychology as humans, we're programmed to desire certain flavors, & general fats, which the food industry appeals to that by marketing unhealthy food without any warning. Again those who are susceptible to marketing are vulnerable (children, and the ignorant).
This issue like all are issues of society and if we take the individuals to blame route with this we'll screw ourselves. I think americas collectivism is long overdue on this matter.....

    • In my experience, people just don't give a shit what they are eating. All they base their decisions on is taste. Which, granted, is the way it should be. However, ever since food became replaced with imitation food, the senses evolution blessed us with are no longer a good judge. It's sad that a lot of people don't realize this. It's hard to blame the individual for their eating habits since they are simply following their primitive senses. Sugar, fat and salt; rare in nature but just about fucking everywhere in civilization. Walk into any grocery store and the bread, isn't really bread; the juice, isn't really juice; the meat... I don't really know what it is anymore. It's a disgrace, and even cruel to some degree.

You're right. They shouldn't be sweetening everything with high fructose corn syrup. Why do they do it? Because our food system has fallen under the control of multi-national corporations. And of course all they care about is money. High fructose corn syrup is very inexpensive to use and much more versatile than cane sugar, beet sugar, date sugar, etc..

Just avoid eating and drinking those items, and make your own juices and sodas. That's what I started doing. Avoid all processed food. They're toxic. Start a co-op garden or your own garden. I know it's not convenient, but it's the only way to fight back

You really can't blame the companies. They only make food that way because people buy it. You can't eat their food and then complain that its made the way it is. If you don't like how it's made, don't eat it, simple as that.

    • What ever happen to the junk food tax? I want a tax on all unhealthy foods. They tax the hell out of cigs and booze. Why not all unhealthy items?

The junk food tax did not work. Actually it was called the snack tax. People just avoided buying those items. And its rules were incosistent. For excample popcorn was not considered a snack food cause it is not sold already popped in grocery stores. It has to be cooked and popped before it becomes a snack food.

    • Food education can itself become a huge contribution to today's economic hardships.

With people buying healthier foods, it would drive the price down of the groceries we should be eating more of, and force change onto the Fast-Food / Junk-Food empires that would then begin to see an increase in the costs of their own goods.

Furthermore, preventing health problems such as diabeties and heart disease will also force change within the healthcare industry. As people become less sickly, healthcare can truly cover what it should cover. Emergencies. Thus, or at least we hope, the prices would then drop somewhat as most of the incoming money would go less towards needless doctor visits and drugs and more towards injuries, broken bones, etc. Healthcare itself would probably become more affordable to the average person thus making "Universal Healthcare" less necessary. This solution appeases both political parties in regards to this issue while improving the quality of life for America in general.

It's sad that people are so out of touch with their body. You would think for such an "evolved" lifeform, that we'd at least understand the feedback our body gives us about what we're eating..... The fact that people think that thousands of years of evolution and eating could change within 20 years to include sugar, preservatives, bread, artificial ingredients, and lack of fats and protein is mind boggling.

I wish I could really put my knowledge together and really get my voice out there the way that Oliver is, but I don't really have that presence in the world. I suggest for anyone curious about how we should really eat to look into the Paleo Diet, Dr. Mercola, Paul Chek, and anyone relative. Thanks for reading my response if you did..... feedback would be great as I don't claim to have all of the answers

    • love the ideas!!

In my country the main issues with the diet of the population are:
      - fast food
      - soda
      - bread (OMG is bread incredible here)

      so lets fight that back!
As jamie said, education is key.

Jennyschu, I'm not sure I understand this, cause when I was very young, I ate all that nonsense too (McDonald's, candy, lollipops, cupcakes, cookies), but as I got older I educated myself about food and realized how my body was reacting to it and I made the necessary changes. I still have a long way to go, but I've seen progress in the changes I've made by switching to a healthier diet.

I think the real issue here is, if it doesn't interest people they are not going to make changes to their diet.

You can tell many people till you are blue in the face about healthy eating and they don't care. They just want to eat what tastes good, and then they have the nerve to wonder why their bellies look like boulders or beach balls

    • eh jamie...

like the idea... but lets also hit the corn issue, the gmo issue, the fact that bleach is used in meat packing plants to "clean" the meat. or how about that report that its not fish its plastic you are eating?

lets look at the horrible conditions of "industrial farming" not only for the animals but for the workers who are treated no better then the damn animals and for the most part are foreign workers being screwed over out of fear of deportation. Or how about American citizens who need a job but will not work for these companies after seeing the craptacular working conditions and the joke of a wage they are paying their virtual slave labor force.

I highly doubt he'd attack the practice of using bleach to disinfect items in the food system. Bleach as used is actually very safe for humans as at the levels of concentration used rapidly degenerates to sodium chloride. Bleach is so safe you actually produce it inside your own body as part of your immune system.

Which is exactly why , I say , good luck with that . Food marketing is a powerful tool . Food companies do NOT want to educate anyone . They don't even want to reveal the ingredients ! " Natural flavors " my eye . He is correct , there does need to be a restructuring , though . Organic local compost , organic local greenhouses , teaching children how to grow it . Let them grow their lunch . Teaches integrity and independence .
