Toyota Motor Corp. said it is recalling about 8,000 Tacoma pick-up trucks over a cracked part built by one of the company's suppliers, adding to the list of recalls that has called into question Toyota's reputation as a quality leader.

Toyota says there is a crack in the front propeller shaft of four-wheel drive Tacomas that were built between mid-December and February. The crack is undetectable to the human eye, according to Toyota spokesman Brian Lyons.

"It is our understanding that not very many of these are in customer hands," Mr. Lyons said, because the vehicles were built so recently. The company is asking dealers to inspect the vehicles on their lots and will send letter out to owners by mid-March.

Toyota, long known as a leader in reliability and safety, is working to fix problems in millions of vehicles in three separate recalls. The number of vehicles recalled globally by Toyota has reached 8.5 million, and included a recall earlier this week of its flagship Prius hybrid cars.
