Rachel Maddow Stuns Rep. Aaron Schock By Calling Out His Spending Hypocrisy (VIDEO)

atomiclegion
A heated exchange took place during NBC's "Meet the Press" on Sunday when MSNBC host Rachel Maddow accused Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Ill.) of hypocrisy for railing against a spending bill in public while touting its benefits in his home district.

Appearing alongside each other during a panel session, Maddow pivoted from a discussion on job creation to note that Schock had appeared at an event on Friday touting a grant program that he had voted against.

"You, in your district, I just read that you were at a community college touting a $350,000 green technology education program, talking about how great that was going to be for your district," she said. "You voted against the bill that created that grant. That's happening a lot with Republicans sort of taking credit for things that Democratic bills do and then Republicans simultaneously touting their votes against them and trashing them. That, I think, is a problem that needs to be resolved within your caucus. Because you seem like a very nice person but that is a very hypocritical stance to take."

A somewhat taken-aback Schock insisted that Republicans were "not consulted on the stimulus bill" and shouldn't be blamed for the lack of a bipartisan vote for its passage. This didn't really get to Maddow's point. So after some back-and-forth among the other panelists, Schock jumped back in.

"If you vote against the omnibus bill," she said at the end of the exchange, "if you complain about the omnibus bill, if you tout your vote against the omnibus bill, it is hypocrisy to then go to your district and go to a ribbon cutting ceremony for something that is funded by the omnibus bill that you voted against."

    • Seriously how many of the democrats and republicans voted for and still support the illegal war in Iraq? And how many are still voting to fund the war in Afghanistan and Pakistan and Iraq? The republicans and democrats are two of the same groups of people who just have the same agenda just different labels. Two faced is a better description.

    • Meet the Press, MSNBC owned by General Electric, is trying to legitimize Aaron Schock by having him on he air. He certainly has been shown a lot of favors, including Obama letting him ride on Air Force One. It's amazing what the nuclear industry will do. Schock wants more nuke plants and Peoria is to house a new VA hospital. Nukes, military and a Catholic mafia boss, torture, harassment and cover-up. Mind control/ brainwashing. All a part of the Peoria corrupt political landscape.

      Have you seen her show?

I find myself agreeing with her more often than not, but she's as much of a political hack as O'Reilly or Hannity, but with another perspective.

Figures like this are polarizing, we shouldn't need a one-sided mouth piece to legitimate our views.

    • I don't really like how lately the Republicans have been seriously bashed by the media--but at the same time I have to say they obviously aren't getting a clue that they set themselves up for most of the bashing's.

I mean come on now--if you voted against the stimulus money and thought it was a lousy idea--then don't tout how its working and go to ribbon cutting ceremonies. Seriously hypocrisy is hypocrisy regardless of whether you have an R or a D in front of your name.

    • Politicians are not nice people they are too arrogant and have taken ownership over our entire lives and so are depriving we the people of the right of a livlihood. They have taken away our right to ear n a living and still they will not remove the problem the Fewderal Reserve and the Supreme court and justice. There should have been a lot of indictments in Goldman Sachs and AIG. And in addition the Bush administration is still free from justice. WHY?? the people have absolutely no power. and whoever says that good will overcome evil is full of Shitr. Listen here as Ford refuses to tell is bonuses in Merrill Lynch. That is aarogant and too he will probably run for the Senate. He is a twofaced assh...

    • Rachel Maddow calls it here. I wish she had more forums to show her debating skills besides NBC. Yet, I am always impressed by David Brooks. He never seems to falter on the issues. And, he always stays relevant . This time he rightly nailed Obama. Republicans should be fighting on the issues. If they did, they would score. Right now, this "centrist" is the only one doing so.

    • Republicans are not nice people. Aaron Schock is not a nice person. He represents nuclear power, war, GMO's, pesticides. He represents the other people in his district all right, all the military and deceiving, conniving republicans. The truth needs to come out about what the Peoria republican party have done and are still doing to my family and me. Ray LaHood is also a crook. LaHood stated on the Jon Stewart show that he has lots of money. He tells people what to do and they listen to him and do it, no matter how wrong it is. Get me a criminal lawyer and I will sue them. Lots of crooks in Peoria Ill.

    • wow, who would have guessed an elected official want to only spend money on their constituents... find me one that doesn't go off this montra? even reps that want equal spending for all want to take home more bacon to their constituents.

This is why the 10 amendment was added. to bad the commerce clause has become infinitily elastic.

I don't recall who said this but it goes along with your initial statement, which I agree with. Basically the political sentiment is that it's only wasteful spending if it occurs outside your district.

Great link. This impresses me as the giant, yawning gap between philosophies of the left and right. Or, rather, the thinking and non. Media that does it's research, and bases it's story on verifiable fact is the only media worth watching.

    • I hate that stoopid (sic) line, "with all due respect". It's hackneyed, and simply a way to imply the speaker doesn't actually deserve any respect. Schock thinks he's being clever, when it's not.

Just more insults, and further evidence of the trend of "two guys fighting in the middle of the ocean arguing about who's going to drown first".

I express the same sentiment with an analogy about how Nero (the Democrats) fiddles as Rome burns; meanwhile the Republicans are not trying to put out the fire, but instead are content to write a music review telling everyone about what a sucky fiddler Nero is.
