Republicans Spurn Once-Favored Health Mandate

For Republicans, the idea of requiring every American to have health insurance is one of the most abhorrent provisions of the Democrats' health overhaul bills.

"Congress has never crossed the line between regulating what people choose to do and ordering them to do it," said Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT). "The difference between regulating and requiring is liberty."

But Hatch's opposition is ironic, or some would say, politically motivated. The last time Congress debated a health overhaul, when Bill Clinton was president, Hatch and several other senators who now oppose the so-called individual mandate actually supported a bill that would have required it.

In fact, says Len Nichols of the New America Foundation, the individual mandate was originally a Republican idea. "It was invented by Mark Pauly to give to George Bush Sr. back in the day, as a competition to the employer mandate focus of the Democrats at the time."

    • I know this throws another log on the hypocrisy fire. And the fact that none of us are surprised by this is exactly why it makes me so sad and frustrated. It's not even the people, on either side, that show no shame in being complete hypocrites,... it's the people who believe in them that really scare me.

    • Interesting exercise in hypocrisy, huh ? None of this surprises me any more than it would Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Ben Franklin, or Sam Adams. If they were alive today they would likely acknowledge that we have 2 wings of the same party contantly competing for dominance...But it's realy a one party system called the Corporate Party which is pulling the strings of the marionette show no matter which designer label you buy into at voting time. Support Ron Paul, and all the H.R. Reps which have voted with him to audit the "Fed" before
the steal everything that's not nailed down by turning your money into their toilet paper, and your time & labor into their owners' Gold.
