In this month’s Tales from the Missionary Hut, our globally concerned inventors lend the poor in the developing world a hand with the help of much vaunted pedal power. Based on a design by Nottingham students, an intriguing machine extracts nut oil with bicycle wheels. Is it nutty or will it get those lazy leg muscles moving and help our peers hit oil? Apparently, it has already taken off.

Tales from the Missionary Hut offers up the Pedal Power Nutter, a handy way to de-shell nuts and grind them into oil, without resorting to environment-ravaging industrial machinery. At least that’s the line from the Sustainable Living Advice Guru. This film’s also a good way to work in as many nut jokes as possible, as well as a chance to take a dig at overprotective health and safety regs, and the romanticised view here in the West of African farmers’ basic lives.
