Is Current on It's Last Leg?

Image
Manatee_man
I used to come here for information and events that you wouldn't see on mainstream news websites/shows but it has been going downhill for a while. The same news stories are on the Front page for a week and most of the time it's just a funny picture that someone found like the recent picture of a Clint Eastwood movie collection that looks like the word Cunt. Haha but so what? What about all of the important news and information found nowhere else?

When i first made a current account it was the days of Vicky the Robot who read the stories on the front page. Hundreds, of comments would be added to the story by Hundreds of differents of users BEFORE it was enev on the front page. Now, Vicky is dead and I only see about 5 or 6 different Comments on a story and most of them are by the same 2 users who added comments to the same 10 new stories added each day. Most of the stories that actually make it to the front page are by Tv shows like Infomania or Embedded or Vangurad. And what's with this new Layout? it's horrible. The special features that I spazzed out about when i first became a Level 3 Commentor was awesome. Now there's this lame new "Ranking" system that i've only seen used like 4 times. So please Current, bring the layout back.

I hope this makes it to the Front Page so people who have ideas can place a comment below and maybe we can bring Current back to it's once awesome glory.

    • We are a disposable society and commercialism is already corrupting Current. On it's last leg? Maybe not yet, but it's losing it way.

Lying FIRST,...I am afraid. MANY men lie,...before they would fight to the death. Most women lie Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay before they would engage in a fight to the death.

This gender discrepancy has NEVER made me feel better about the fundamental state of man.

What,...you would rather LIE,....than be dead,.............and this is the "gurl choice",.....
but we still HAVE to "respect you".

Gurl,....buddy,......I .............DONT respect "my friends" when they make that choice.

Actually , I believe this is incorrect . Example ? You can have two http://www.reclaimingquarterly.org/web/gimbutas/gimbutas1.html Also the 2009 issue of National Geographic , has a great article about one of the last functioning true hunter gatherers . Two examples of many thousands of years without war or deceit anywhere near the grand scale we see on today . Humans are very out of balance with nature and the core of their own existence . We are so far gone , most cannot even be honest with themselves about it . It is simply too terrifying .

I was named that , Over a decade ago , by my oldest and dearest friend . Maybe I was like that , a reclusive forest goddess , a huntress of knowledge or so they see me . I am older now . I have seen and suffered much , simply because I did not yield to fear when , perhaps I should have . I am not terribly repentant either . One of my favorite things I have ever been called . Other names I have been given , little french girl , Lady Godiva , Guenivere ( I have long hair ) . Eventually I may call myself Crone . Not there yet . I would very much like to know why you account has been disabled .

    • I think that it is up to us, the commentators to take this back to the place where the real news comes from. Yes, I got frustrated because people would fight amongst themselves here. The total disrepect for another persons comments lead me to believe that this was just a bitch session. I have been away for a while, but I would love for some of the old commentators to come back. Things are heating up and we need you guys to keep your eyes open. There are things that we do not want to accept, but if it is happening, then we should know about it. Our food is being posioned, our water is being posioned, ourchildren have no idea whats going on. There are so many things going on right now. We need to be kept informed. If you do not believe something, research it and tells us about it. Knowledge is power. Attacking each other only hurts us. Please let us stop hurting each other and band together. We are gong to need each other very soon, if not now, when?

    • Well I've been here before on a now canceled account, I can say why I left, and why there's a good chance I won't be making a habit out of Current again. But as far as Current being on it's last leg probably not, it's just gotten weak because decent members got tired of excessive hate and decided they had better things to do. It's annoying to argue values in principals in a civil manner while others are using reasonable opinions as grounds to personally attack you. That and when certain members straight up tell or ask you to leave repetitively, because intellectual inbreeding within set parameters is what is acceptable around here; well you kinda start feeling unwelcome. Then there are the heavy Atheistic overtones, hate speech and ridicule leveled at almost anyone of faith who's willing to defend said faith. Hmmmm, I could go on and on but if Current just falls off the important or useful list I could see why.

That about covers it. Oh yeah, and paranoid conspiracies.

People are being stupid & complaining instead of actually helping the site & channel get better! There's VERY little wrong with Current aside from all the idiots who just love to complain!!! Don't like it ,that's fine! Find something else to waste time on! & To Current, don't let these immature little kids drag you down!!! Sure Current has had it's ups & downs, but what the hell hasn't??? These kids are angry over someone or something known as Vicky, that's their problem! Current is one of the few watchable channels left on TV these days!!! All the others are being replaced by dumb "Reality" shows!!! Maybe a few idiots like that type of stuff, but I prefer my media to be smart media & Current (with an exception or two) offers some of the best media on TV period!!! Current DOES need to up the VC2 stuff a little, but honestly if people look at current enough, they will find that that stuff STILL is a major part of Current! I hope Current doesn't change that! If people wish to complain, that's fine, but your just wasting time really!!!

i remember when i first joined there was pretty much only VC2 pods.
you used to be able to select what pod you wanted to watch by time slots on a giant pinwheel. this was great because you could watch whatever pods you missed or wanted to see again.

    • Devoid of imagination, as the Philistine always is, he lives in a certain trivial province of experience as to how things go, what is possible, what usually occurs…Philistinism tranquilizes itself in the trivial.

Why does man accept to live a trivial life? Because of the danger of a full horizon of experience, of course. This is the deeper motivation of philistinism, that it celebrates the triumph over possibility, over freedom. Philistinism knows the real enemy: freedom is dangerous.

Kierkegaard is painting for us a broad and incredibly rich portrait of types of human failure, ways in which man succumbs to and is beaten by life and the world; beaten because he fails to face up to the existential truth of his situation – the truth that he is an inner symbolic self, which signifies a certain freedom, and that he is bound by a finite body, which limits that freedom.

The attempt to ignore either aspect of man’s situation, to repress possibility or to deny necessity, means that man will live a lie, fail to realize his true nature, be “the most pitiful of all things.” But man is not always so lucky, he cannot always get by with just being pitiful. If the lie that he attempts to live is too flaunting of reality, a man can lose everything during his lifetime – and this is precisely what we mean by psychosis: the complete and utter breakdown of the character structure.

The depressed person is so afraid of being himself, so fearful of exerting his own individuality, of insisting on what might be his own meanings, his own conditions for living, that he seems literally stupid. He cannot understand the situation he is in, cannot see beyond his own fears, cannot grasp why he has bogged down.

philistinism is what we would call “normal neurosis.” Most men figure out how to live safely within the probabilities of a given set of social rules. The Philistine trusts that by keeping himself at a low level of personal intensity he can avoid being pulled off balance by experience; philistinism works, as Kierkegaard said, by “tranquilizing itself with the trivial.”

      Hence current's demise and malaise.

      That was a superior post.
The "popular wisdom"; freedom is another word for nothing left to loose,....

      implies desperation,...

but it DENOTES a value system based on the "moment", taken as a whole and absolute,....

and that is actually, while perhaps more "desperate",.............more sane.

      anyway,....kudos.

interesting observation and theory! I've long suspected that certain heads at Current have always been worried about looking cheap compared with the professionals and thus not being taken seriously so they tried to overcompensate with their own programming to overshadow VC2s. VC2s took too much work apparently to get them up to their level of standards. Now instead of getting the news from the people they are giving the news to the people much like CNN, MSNBC, Fox, etc... with the occasional VC2 that gets slipped in

I learned so much from one half hour. It was education for people with adhd. If i found something to be particularly interesting, i looked it up. It was bliss. Now, i get on tv and the only thing that's on is supernews, possibly the most obnoxious and pretentious cartoon on the air. Current was a great idea, but has completely sold out.

    • so let me see if I have this straight...it used to be that the typical Current pablum used to promoted and then presented on the Current channel, and now it's not really the same, and so you're crying into your tofu-flake cereal?

I have yet to find ANYTHING created by the users that is of any real value; too much of it is poorly researched, poorly written, so why would anyone think it actually has a value for television? I'd much rather argue passionately over articles that at the very least were written by real journalists and not a cabal of wanna-be revolutionaries.

it's just more of the same. How many times have I suffered through the sad complaints that Current used to be "cool" until those pesky conservatives discovered the site?!

In other words, "we liked it better when current was just an echo chamber for 'enlightened' and like-minded Liberals and we didn't have to actually defend our biases".

I submit a story, mostly from a conservative point of view, and it won't be found in the top 100, but there are probably 50 posts in the top 100 about pot and making it legal. An occasional story about pot is worthy but when every other story is about it......
There are some members here that don't make it much fun also. I try to understand the "other" view but there are some here that ridicule every chance they get....

Current has been a good location for cannabis information. I think cannabis posts make it to the front page because people care about the issue and vote it up, even if they don't comment.

Conservative posts probably don't make it to the top, because people are no longer interested in hearing what the conservatives have to say. George W. and conservatives may think we should just 'move along' to the mistakes they made for the last eight years, but that would be wrong.

Posts calling for accountability for the wrongs of the past, get responses, cause it is the proper course of action. Ignoring the wrongs of the past administration, is just wrong! Politicians may choose to move along, because they are funded by corporations who would prefer 'no accountability'. Ordinary Americans gain 'nothing' from moving along.

Life is not about smoking a joint and blowing it in the cats face.??? Now that comment was just goofy. I'm 55 years old. To think life is about smoking a joint and blowing it in the cats face, is goofy in the first place. Now if you want to talk about political points of view, or cannabis facts, that's one thing. But, don't throw stones if you don't know what the actual target is.

I support reclassifying cannabis hemp. Period! Unless you have something constructive to add to the conversation about cannabis, why try and use it as a weapon? Cannabis hemp has been used as a political tool, spinning madness and uninformed opinions for too long. Trying to spin 'madness' as a weapon, is not constructive dialog, regardless of party.

My cannabis? You're sick of sorting? Well then we definitely should refrain from any more cannabis hemp posts. I wouldn't want you to sort, when we could just 'stop posting' things you don't want to see.

I'm sick of people complaining about cannabis posts. No one forces anyone to click on posts, which do not interest them. That's the great thing about current, there's room for many topics. In my humble opinion, as long as there are cannabis facts, which others want to share, we should be free to post them. As a matter of fact, we are. So, get over it! 'Move along' to posts, which you do want to read. I don't bother clicking on posts, which do not interest me.

Who benefits if people stop posting stories about cannabis? Who benefits if the conversation stops?

I don't want you, or anyone else to shut up. But, posting rude comments is not really participating in the discussion. I don't want people to shut up, I just don't like rude, useless comments. But hey, that's just me. You can post whatever you want.

People's magazine? Really? When have you seen thousands of people sending international and local news stories they care about to People magazine? You're being quite persuadable and closed minded if you've only taken a glance at this company and turned your nose up at it.
All companies need sponsorship. Yes current is starting to take on more advertising funding, taking away from some of its fresh, free-of-media influence. But I still seriously believe Current is a great venue for people around the world to bring attention to stories THEY think are important.
Still, to this day, Current only airs stories the people of this site give attention to. That's what I've recognized as Current's promise to its users and they haven't swayed from it.

To the conservative Current followers, if you're unhappy with the content of top stories then simply tell your conservative friends about Current and get this ball of well rounded discussion and thinking rolling!

    • The last leg analogy is a bit off unless you mean last legs of its original self. If anything, I think Current's success has been more damaging to the original idea of Current. It has brought in attention from high and low in the form of new directions from the programming department and a number of new users on the site who can't properly link to an original news story without going thru half-a-dozen blogs to do so or who just post stuff that is already major news to begin with.

I signed up in the Fall of 2006 when the site was still in its infancy and over time the more successful Current got, user participation dwindled to the point where we are now where very little makes it on TV as the site and network seem hardly connected anymore.

I actually agree with what both of you have stated and it's very true that Current's_ success has lead to it's 'downfall'... for lack of a better phrase. Whenever I see a posting on here about some celebrity, people espousing ignorance in the form of an unsubstantiated opinion, or dropping the 'f' word in their responses, I miss the audience that made Current_ what it was.

oops! I should say user content has dwindled - not user participation. There are more users than before but the difference is many of the old group if not most of them were content creators. As the Current got more successful more people came to the site who did not create content but were "content" to link news items and other websites.

Many in this category seem to be happy the way things are because they never saw the site as it used to be when members had more say in the direction of Current as a whole and for them the "current" Current is more like a redditt or digg site which given the new (crappy) layout is not far from the truth.

If anyone who had been active on this site in 2006-2008 and had gone away in that time were to come back now, they wouldn't recognize the site.
