The “Compton Cookout” has been the subject of palpable and escalating racial tensions these past couple of days on the UC San Diego campus. As reported by numerous new outlets, the “Cookout” was a “ghetto-themed” party held February 15 by a group of UCSD students affiliated with the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. The notorious Facebook invitation proposed girls dress up like “ghetto chicks” in “cheap clothing” and to “talk loudly”, while promises of “Kool-aid” and “fried chicken” were to be served to attendees.

The day after the news broke, The Koala, an alternative newspaper on campus, got shut down because they used the “N Word” on air and wrote “Compton Lynching” on a piece of cardboard found at the station. Some students are arguing that the campus is imposing on rights to free speech, while others point to the lack of welcome-ness minorities face on this campus. The “Compton Cookout” is an event has become bigger than itself and has sparked an interest in discovering the roots of its controversy.
