Preparations to take on the US government when it declares martial law

THE .50 CALIBER Bushmaster bolt action rifle is a serious weapon. The model that Pvt. 1st Class Lee Pray is saving up for has a 2,500-yard range and comes with a Mark IV scope and an easy-load magazine. When the 25-year-old drove me to a mall in Watertown, New York, near the Fort Drum Army base, he brought me to see it in its glass case—he visits it periodically, like a kid coveting something at the toy store. It'll take plenty of military paychecks to cover the $5,600 price tag, but he considers the Bushmaster essential in his preparations to take on the US government when it declares martial law.

His belief that that day is imminent has led Pray to a group called Oath Keepers, one of the fastest-growing "patriot" organizations on the right. Founded last April by Yale-educated lawyer and ex-Ron Paul aide Stewart Rhodes, the group has established itself as a hub in the sprawling anti-Obama movement that includes Tea Partiers, Birthers, and 912ers. Glenn Beck, Lou Dobbs, and Pat Buchanan have all sung its praises, and in December, a grassroots summit it helped organize drew such prominent guests as representatives Phil Gingrey and Paul Broun, both Georgia Republicans.

There are scores of patriot groups, but what makes Oath Keepers unique is that its core membership consists of men and women in uniform, including soldiers, police, and veterans. At regular ceremonies in every state, members reaffirm their official oaths of service, pledging to protect the Constitution—but then they go a step further, vowing to disobey "unconstitutional" orders from what they view as an increasingly tyrannical government.

Our Constitution gives us the right to bear arms,and without that right we the people are doomed!       so have you had to use your guns yet? have you used them to take down some form of unfair governing? so youre just keeping tons of guns for one day when it gets so bad that you have to go rambo and start protecting yourself? i agree that the rich elite are terrorists but youre never going to have to have guns to protect you from that, guns are too accessible, our gun deaths are much higher than many other countries for that very reason, guns serve no purpose, none whatsoever, they are just comfort, they allow people to think that they have some control but all they do is cause problems, having a gun in the house presents a much higher probability that those guns will be the cause of death in the household, having to take arms against our govt is ridiculous, the only way to fight them is by having numbers of support, there is no basis to have a gun in the home because more than likely it will serve no purpose besides killing an innocent person

    • I can't believe how much attention this article has gotten, I'm thinking most of the credit must go to the inflammatory title. I thought that most people would realize that moral high ground would be the only possible advantage that these militia movements could hope to have if martial law were enforced. Even, no especially the veteran, police, and soldier members of this group would have to realize how hopelessly out-gunned we would be. There would be little hope of actually winning in even an indirect conflict, and if it were indirect, that would mean using many of the same tactics that terrorists use and that is not something I could support. Even if we did find an honorable way of fighting without getting crushed immediately, it would be a bad thing for the country as a whole, making us more vulnerable to outside invasion, which is something I'd not want to live to see. OK, martial law is bad and revolution is romantic (aside from the blood and guts and broken bodies and shattered minds [example: srg]) but how do you think a war between tanks and tiger pits is really going to turn out? I've made comments in the past about finding caves, and growing bamboo for traps and such, but I wouldn't fight until there was no doubt in my mind that a glorious death would be preferable to whatever the government has in store. You people are acting as though someone's already tried to take the white house, or parked a bushmaster in front of your house in case you get ideas.

      If they had any concern for protecting the constitution, than why didn’t they do anything when Bush was trying to push unwarranted wiretaps and the Patriot Act on everyone? Why are they preparing for martial law when they didn’t care that US citizens in New Orleans were subjected to it when a Republican was in office?

      Obama has not committed any of the unconstitutional travesties that Bush is guilty of. These nuts were all for fighting terrorism under Bush, but now they are becoming terrorists. It doesn’t make any sense at all.

      You need to look past the left and the right and realize that they are same thing, Obama is no differenet than Bush. The point being is that these things are happening and it opens the real possibility for the emergence of a tyrannical government in the country.

      I don't know why. You would have to define who you mean by "they". Once you have defined the term then we would have to take a look at the individual circumstances surrounding their actions or lack there of in regards New Orleans, and the original patriot act and research how these actions or lack there of relate to today circumstances.

Or I can recommend a slow cooker, as the old rabbits are very tough(tastes like chicken). Cook them first in a pressure cooker to tenderise them, then slow roast them in the oven, stuffed with potatoes, onions, green peppers,garlic, bacon, and other herbs of your choice. After awhile, you will forget about the garden damage.

    • Srg, why are you here? If you're looking for support for your point of view, it makes sense that you'd be blogging on a conservative website.

      That aside, you're angry at what you see going on in our country, so are we. You wish it was different, so do we. So I guess my question is, what do you perceive is wrong with the country and what are some of your ideas that you think would help fix things? If all you express is anger, anger is all you'll get in return. If you have a rationale argument to make, then make it clearly and concisely so people can respond to it, rather than your emotions. Not everyone will agree with you, but some may.

      With regard to Oakland in the 70's, it's time to move on. That stuff happened 40 years ago and we are a different country now. I was in service from 76 to 80 and it was already changing then. I was proud to serve and it turned out being one of the smartest things I ever did in my life. Peace
