Action Alert from NIRS:

"Dear Friends:

A quick reminder that today, Thursday, February 25, is the National Call-Congress Day to stop the Obama Administration's proposed $54 Billion loan program for new nuclear reactor construction--otherwise known as a giant taxpayer giveaway to wealthy nuclear corporations.

You can reach every member of Congress through the Congressional Switchboard: 202-224-3121.

We ask that your call your House Representative and both of your Senators, if at all possible.

Our asks are these:

*we want them to publicly oppose the President's request for a tripling of the Department of Energy loan "guarantee" program to $54 Billion.

*we want them to vote against this program in committee if possible and on the floor if it comes to the floor.

We are supplementing the Call-Congress Day with your letters.

*If you haven't written to your Representative yet this week, please do so here.

*If you haven't written to your Senators yet this week, please do so here.

Please drop us a quick e-mail (to nirsnet@nirs.org) and let us know that you called, and any response you receive.

This is a National Call-Congress Day, being sponsored by several groups, including NIRS, Public Citizen, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Beyond Nuclear, Southern Alliance for Clean Energy and others.

Let's keep those phones ringing all day long! Help us spread the word! Make sure everyone has the opportunity to participate. Your actions matter!

Thanks for all you do,

Michael Mariotte

P.S. if you've never signed the statement on nuclear power and climate ("We do not support construction of new nuclear reactors as a means of addressing the climate crisis. Available renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies are faster, cheaper, safer and cleaner strategies for reducing greenhouse emissions than nuclear power."), please visit our home page, www.nirs.org to sign."

Please call today! Our future is at stake! We demand CLEAN energy, not more cancer. We do not promote holding up the fake "atoms for peace" program. Atomic power has ruined the planet. America should be ashamed of itself for inventing such a phenomenon. Can we please move forward and learn from our lessons? Stop the cover-up of the deadly waste and leaking power plants. Enough is enough. No more nukes!

    • Thanks futuregen, done. I was just watching a program on the Manhattan Project the other day and the destruction it rained upon the earth that is till felt everyday. Man surely is arrogant isn't he? Nuclear power is an economic, environmental, and social boondoggle. That is why the industry can't even get private funding, and why Wall Street doesn't even support it. That is why Obama has now given away MORE of our tax dollars on loan guarantees that we will more than likely be left holding the bag for, because there are huge safety issues to the buldings looking to be constructed. The waste issue will never be settled, and we will be poisoning this planet for thousands of years to come. Solar is the future, and that is where we should be going tin order to give us the best return on our investments. The antiquated dangerous ways of the past will never power the future adequately in a world of water shortages, global warming, and the need for living space, along with preserving our national security. It is time to move into the 21st Century even if we have to drag these greedy status quo politiciains and their campaign donors with us.

    • More ideological agenda than proven scientific fact, I suppose. But it is only a bad man who would shun the knowledge of the unfathomable power of the atom and a true idiot who would refuse to harness it for the benefit of mankind.

    • fuck that, nuclear energy is clean energy. this isnt the 1970's and were not some third world country. and all the science shows it's clean when used properly... you should be pissing all over there technology side making sure it is clean and finding out facts there instead of wasting time resiting proven science... not trying to stop the one source of cheap clean energy for now... until we get better solar, more efficient wind, and those new bloom box energy things in peoples houses... fuck... i hate hippie left over shit... i mean... go clean and all that but fuck... know whats clean, why and how... nuclear is crazy shit... but were not using casio watches to control them any more... were using super secure PS3's n shit...

      anyways im done.

i didnt even read this article.. im just always pissed when people bitch about nuclear energy.

no... but we could dump it underground, in sealed containers full of compressed pellets. the area they have ALREADY BUILT but have not been able to use because of red tape... proven science, is in the middle of the desert (in new mexico i think) where there is zero chance of ground water penetration because of the lack of ground water in the area, as well as lack of tectonic activity, and not to mention it would be monitored and closed in and restricted and all other kinds of crap.... but i guess your a better scientist than the scientist that built the thing and tested the crap.
