ok the health concerns are fine, but all the rest of those who are "upset" about this, WHY, frickin why? What causes asexual-phobia is my question!

Im gonna be a douche, and ask why it's never really attractive people that identify with asexuality? And the fact that none of these people have ever tried sex does not add to their credibility as asexuals.
I've watched another documentary on the subject, and one thing that always baffles me, is the lack of scientific research in the area.
Like previously stated in a comment below; the lack of sexual interest is most likely a sign of endocrine(the glands that secrete hormones) related issues. As most of you might already know; hormones are one of the main benefactors to sexual activity.
So in conclusion we can deduct that asexual people either; A. Suffer from severe hormonal imbalance, or B. Want to have sex, but suppress their desires for one reason or another(psychological inhibitors).

I admit, this is baffling to me. I wonder if they have ever had sex or just basically avoided it? Anyway, that's cool :) I was surprised to hear that they want romantic relationships without sex though. Is it just the physical act of sex that they don't want? Is it the emotional feeling attached to it? Where is the line drawn when it comes to sex, penetration, oral sex, or cuddling? Interesting stuff, thanks for the post :) I wish I could ask them questions!

over sexualized society? where is this happening? really? I want to be in an oversexed society... because apparently we're not living in the same society. just because you yourself don't have sex doesn't mean that others who do are "over-sexed."

Fascinating, thank you for the post.
All the people in the pod seem very young. I would like to hear from older people who feel similar.
The whole thing just makes me appreciate the wide variety of human possibilities.

Asexual behavior is a common symptom found in many different endocrine unbalancing diseases and conditions. I wonder how much the documentary focuses on the fact that these people's "life choice" could be a sign of a potentially life threatening internal problem.

Ya, I noticed that, as well? If you ask me, asexual people have it going on! Sex can really complicated these days. I'm not a prude, but i feel like sex has taken us over. It's a taboo now, to wait, and for most people, sex rules it all. I just wish I was asexual... The people in the video seemed very at peace with themselves. sweet video, never really thought about it, until now!!

interesting that the interviewees both sit with a pillow covering their genital area...not a psychologist, but I think there is some body language at work there.

I would also be interested to know what percentage of priests and nuns are asexual, I mean ideally all of them, but which came first the celibacy or the religion?
"Neither came first." *ba dum chk* hahaha bad joke.

A new monk arrives at the monastery. He is assigned to help the other monks in copying the old texts by hand. He notices, however, that they are copying copies, and not the original books.
So, the new monk goes to the head monk to ask him about this. He points out that if there was an error in the first copy, that error would be continued in all of the other copies. The head monk says, "We have been copying from the copies for centuries, but you make a good point, my son."
So, he goes down into the cellar with one of the copies to check it against the original. Hours later, nobody has seen him. So, one of the monks goes downstairs to look for him. He hears sobbing coming from the back of the cellar and finds the old monk leaning over one of the original books crying. He asks what's wrong.
"The word is celebrate not celibate," says the old monk with tears in his eyes.

I wouldn't believe it was real if I didn't know a really stunningly attractive girl that was nonsexual and says she is.
I don't think it's a problem but I would like to learn more about what mechanisms that lead to it. Not to try and fix anything it's just interesting to me because she's so hot. I mean she gets PLENTY of offers and hates it. She's essentially the polar opposite of most girls I know who WANT IT and will tell me too much detail about their weekends hahaha

I'm glad that the world is changing enough that we can start to understand peoples sexual differences and discuss them openly. I also agree with the other comments wishing that the pod would have delved a little deeper.

Perhaps this is one answer to poor healthcare in America and other third world countries, since pregnancy is a health risk. But I doubt any of these people remain asexual for life. this is a temporary condition. These people aren't old enough to know what sex even is, and they probably have never really experienced it's true potential. - 1 year ago

I believe you're mistaken. I know it's difficult for us "sexuals" to understand, but that doesn't make it illegitimate. I think part of the problem with this pod is the people they interviewed were too young and the interview itself was shallow.

For me to believe this, I'd have to see proof that someone lived their entire life without sex. I doubt there are 1% of the population who do that.

This is just a meandering idea: what if non-reproductive sexualities are popping up, or becoming more prevalent at least, because our planet is overburdened and it's an ecological response? And I don't mean overpopulated; I mean overBURDENED.

Yeah, like it's biologically impossible to not be attracted the opposite sex, am I right?! I mean if you don't have sex you'll slowly wither and die. It's exactly like not eating. Exactly.

What about the people who are attracted to horses? Or pet rocks? Or themselves? Asexual implies you don't ever want to rub your genitals on anything. I don't think that's possible.

I just wonder, considering the prevalence being 1%, if this meant they would be willing for their romantic partner to have sexual relations with others to satisfy their needs. If they are asexual I would assume that they wouldn't be offended, because if you have no desire for sex yourself but want your partner to respect your beliefs...i dunno. I wish they had went into that in the piece.

An interesting look into Asexuality, though it seems as if this was only scratching the surface; a bit superficial. It seems like it could have gone a bit deeper into what it means to be asexual -in- an oversexed society; how they feel about marketing, advertising, etc; i'm sure there has to be some alienation felt there. Perhaps some of their previous engagements with attempts at romantic-only relationships? And not to be rude, but are these the only two people in the Vancouver Asexual group? I'd doubt it. Overall, an interesting, informative, but a bit too brief, look at asexuality.

Agreed! I have known a few people that I would consider to be asexual and it is a very complex deal. Maybe it just seems complex because we're not used to it, but this doc did seem to oversimplify things, and the people that they used seemed socially awkward in more ways than one which made it unfortunate that they were the "face" of asexuality.

I like the podcast. Very well done. However I have questions. No one is in a relationship in the podcast. They say they would like one, but would need to find someone that understands their beliefs. But in that same note, unless they are with another asexual person, a reciprocation of beliefs would have to be in order. And there is the conflict. Its almost as if a gay man dated a straight woman and expected her to understand his beliefs. It just doesn't work like that. There is give and take in a relationship, and people have needs. If those needs aren't met, then that is situation for disaster. Just my thoughts.

Assumptions. This thing called 'free will' makes it irrational to predict a uniform response to such circumstances. I myself would be probably be fine with a sexless romantic relationship.
