It was a pretty foolish move. The real fear around actual Obama-driven socialism should be plenty, one would think.

this is why i choose not to take sides because i oppose views of both parties. I hate taxes because i'd like to keep that 9 cents out of every dollar that i spend and i don't agree with people getting ssi checcs when they're perfectly fine. but that's another story.

It's manipulation of those who are vulnerable - not unlike a con man or a swindler.

I agree with librelover, and the mindset will unfortunatley always be a part of the way humanity has grown itself. It would take something like, Assured Destruction, (comet, asteroid, alien threat, super virus, Nuclear Holocaust Planet-wide), to unite and go the right way.

There will always be arguements and ideals.

The populists did this when representing Republicans as banker pigs in the early twentieth century (a board time, but I'm to lazy to look it up right now). It's less fear tactics, more smear tactics. It's been used in many instances. Look at the how the Japanese portrayed the Americans, the Americans portrayed the Japanese, Germans, and Russians, the Germans portrayed the Jews and the Americans. It's just symbolism to communicate a perception. Unfortunately, some people truly have such a perception of others, and it can appeal to still others who have such a perception.
