US Defense dept warns of danger from climate change

In January this year the US Department of Defense, that bastion of socialists, published its Quadrennial Defense Review Report.

The report not only implicitly accepts climate change but also points to the dangers it poses to national security.

It’s worth reading how it expects climate change to impact the armed forces:

*Crafting a Strategic Approach to Climate and Energy (pg84)*

"Climate change and energy are two key issues that will play a significant role in shaping the future security environment.

"Although they produce distinct types of challenges, climate change, energy security, and economic stability are inextricably linked. The actions that the Department takes now can prepare us to respond effectively to these challenges in the near term and in the future.

"Climate change will affect DoD in two broad ways.

"First, climate change will shape the operating environment, roles, and missions that we undertake. The U.S. Global Change Research Program, composed of 13 federal agencies, reported in 2009 that climate-related changes are already being observed in every region of the world, including the United States and its coastal waters.

"Among these physical changes are increases in heavy downpours, rising temperature and sea level, rapidly retreating glaciers, thawing permafrost, lengthening growing seasons, lengthening ice-free seasons in the oceans and on lakes and rivers, earlier snowmelt, and alterations in river flows.

"Assessments conducted by the intelligence community indicate that climate change could have significant geopolitical impacts around the world, contributing to poverty, environmental degradation, and the further weakening of fragile governments. Climate change will contribute to food and water scarcity, will increase the spread of disease, and may spur or exacerbate mass migration."

The review also offers examples of how the US Military has reduced its carbon foot-print and secured energy supplies...

An LC reader wrote in to say: “With the Pentagon acknowledging the reality of global climate change in the latest Quadrennial Defense Review Report, this surely puts the neocons with their ‘greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people‘ at odds with their own Generals and Admirals.”

    • Didn't the CIA name C.C. as the biggest threat to the country a while ago? But until lots of people start dying we'll keep dragging our feet.

    • For all you misinformed naysayers:

Some theories, like evolution, are slow in rising up and slapping you on your arse for not realizing the truth.

Climate change (once again, it is not weather) on the other hand is evident now, slapping you on the arse, and it will slap you children and grandchildren in the face.

Perhaps then you will wake up and smell the coffee. Climate scientists have nothing to gain by telling the truth - their university salaries don't depend on it and their funding is for research not their salary; however, the Becksters and Rushgoobs of the world have much to gain by denying the truth, maintaining that bottom line for their industrial backers.

And for all you climategaters still hanging on that sad bag, substituting real world temperatures into figures about tree rings because tree ring density has declined due to global warming and pollution may be a statistical "trick", but it is still the truth, even more so.

And how is reducing emissions or CO2 and pollutants controlling your life? How many of you so called Christians realize that not cleaning up industry and car emissions and nurturing species that are dying because of humans is diametrically opposed to what your God told you to do?

They already control your life. Income tax is unconstitutional... your passport has an RFID in it, your cell phone can be tapped at any time and your house can be searched without a warrant. Your liberties are gone... and climate change is real, I'm sorry to say.

    • So how much more money does the Pentagon need to protect us from Global Warming? I am sure the Defense Department wants more money so they can update our intercontinental ballistic missiles to be equipped with the latest CO2 diffusion technology.

    • I would figure that, given the amount of money the military-industrial complex swindles each year from U.S. Taxpayers, the Department of Defense would be announcing that our national debt and deficit spending measures pose a greater threat to national security than Iran, Al Qaeda, North Korea and climate change.

    • Well anyone with a glimmer of logic can figure out that climate change is going to have a huge impact of geopolitical relations. I guarantee that we will see conflicts over access to fresh water within the next 50 years.

    • Those "scientists" on Fox aren't actually scientists, they're paid political spokespeople.

True scientists are taught to look at the evidence objectively and then form parsimonious conclusions; not form a conclusion then lie about the evidence.

Truly practicing the scientific method inherently breeds at least a modicum of honesty and integrity.

    • I doubt if any part of this story will even touch the main stream media. Even if it did Fox News would have ten of their scientists on air ASAP to give rebuttal to this report.

It is a shame that this govt cannot be honest with its people.

"I am a firm believer in the people. If given the truth, they can be depended upon to meet any national crisis. The great point is to bring them the real facts."
      ~Abraham Lincoln

"Whenever the people are well-informed, they can be trusted with their own government."
      ~Thomas Jefferson

We have been misinformed, confused, and distracted by the richest corporations in the world and their pets in the govt and media. The powerful will never relinquish their power without a fight, even at the cost of human and ecological crises. This article will never make it to the mainstream because the govt and media suppress it for the sake of their owners. Thank God for the internet and the REAL scientific community.
