Sea lions killed for eating protected fish

Portland, Ore. — Wildlife officials have tried everything to keep sea lions from eating endangered salmon, dropping bombs that explode under water and firing rubber bullets and bean bags from shotguns and boats. Now they are resorting to issuing death sentences to the most chronic offenders.

A California sea lion last week became the first salmon predator to be euthanized this year under a program that has been denounced by those who say there are far greater dangers to salmon — including the series of hydroelectric dams on the Columbia.

This is the second year of the program, which is administered by wildlife officials in Oregon and Washington and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Last year, 11 sea lions were euthanized. Another four were transferred to zoos or aquariums.

    • Hmmm. What is the difference between salmon and endagerd salmon? Are not whales more endangered? Are we going to kill the Chinese for whaling? They could stand to lose a few hundred million, then they would not have to force parents to only have one kid and sending the others to a lifetime of military service if the law is not obeyed.

    • We are some stupid assed people. How many meetings until this seemed like a good idea? What kind of kook kills sea lions to save salmon? That is why we need to keep track of the government. Even the tree huggers.

    • Sea lions have been eating fish all kinds since the dawn of light. To punish the so that man can his fill is crazy. People should have to adjust to life without salmon, afterall it were not the lions that caused the decline int he salmon.

    • We will kill sea lions for eating fish, but we will not kill or release a whale for killing a human. You get more time in jail for killing a dog then you do a baby. We are screwed up people'

    • 100 miles north of los angeles is the mouth of the santa yenz river. not a big river but it had samon until the dam was built during the depression. my grandpa worked on the dam and he said they put in a salmon ladder but not a one ever used it.

when man finally has synthetic food there will be no more non-human animals.

    • The true culprits in the near-extinction of wild salmon on the Columbia River are hydroelectric dams which have flooded spawning grounds, blocked the river, and raised water temperatures. In fact, my typing this is contributing to the death of salmon, because I use electricity generated from Columbia River water.

If we would remove the four dams on the lower Snake River (which enters the Columbia near Pasco, Washington), the salmon would be able to reach spawning grounds which have been denied them for over 40 years. The Snake River ports of Lewiston Idaho and Clarkston, Washington, however, oppose such measures because that would mean a loss of revenue to shipping companies which use the river to transport grain, gasoline, and other products.

It is possible that those products could be moved by truck and/ existing railroad lines, but the monied interests have opposed this for many years. Unless and until someone has the guts to stand up against those who use the river as a highway and nothing else, sea lions will be the scapegoats for the loss of salmon. This situation is dishonest and saddening, because the Columbia River was once teeming with wild salmon- salmon which nurtured Native American communities and culture for over 10,000 years. Will our legacy be a dead river?

    • Is it the sea lions' fault that the salmon are endangered? No.
So where should those bullets really be going...?

    • And the bombs didn't hurt the salmon? Let the sea lions eat, damn-it! How would you like someone shooting you while your eating you dinner at your favorite restaurant? Is this backward or what? Killing one species to save another......

      Thanks for the link--interesting article.

I don't think that we should let the fish go extinct if at all possible. However, it seems wrong to kill sea lions for behaving naturally when they diminished salmon population appears to be our fault. We're the ones polluting the oceans, building dams, and overfishing. Not the sea lions.

      I agree.
Killing the sea lions is more damage control than fixing the cause of the problem.
Hopefully this will push some much needed environmental laws into action.

    • Wait, seriously? Killing an animal for eating it's natural prey?

Why can't we do something like, oh, I don't know, restrict human fishing of salmon? Given that we're capable of higher though and have the ability to locate plenty of other sources of food....

Interesting--thanks for that info. I would have assumed it would be, but the article referenced fishermen watching the sea lions grab salmon out of their nets, so I wasn't sure.

(I still think it's rather a dumb move, though. It's not like the sea lion can know that the salmon is endangered.)

    • In many parts of the west coast there is an over abundance of Sea Lions. I say kill them to keep the population healthy, but don't try to figure out which are eating the salmon. Time would be better spent breeding the salmon for reintroduction to the ecosystem.

    • Seriously?!

What are people thinking? Are we going to start euthanizing people who eat salmon daily from the super market too? Why don't we put people who consume cheeseburgers into stock yards like the cows they eat?

    • WTF?? Why shoot the sea lions when their only crime is eating for sustenance? I know some people that should be shot for the crime of eating.

Are we REALLY that egotistical as a species that we think that other species should pay with their lives for our own screw-ups and comfort? It appears the answer to that is yes. Ugh. What would the founding fathers think?? How embarrassing and demoralizing.
