The breakthrough promises biodegradable plastics made in a way that saves on energy, according to Chandrasekhar "Spike" Narayan, a manager of science and technology at IBM's Almaden Research Center in Northern California.
Almaden and Stanford University researchers said the discovery could herald an era of sustainability for a plastics industry rife with seemingly eternal products notorious for cramming landfills and littering the planet.
"This discovery and new approach using organic catalysts could lead to well-defined, biodegradable molecules made from renewable resources in an environmentally responsible way," IBM said in a release.

Stupid people think all this green tech. will save the planet the only answer is conservation. like bio fuels this new plant plastic will harm the planet as much if not more with the destruction to the planet to grow the crops along with the energy (daniel Quinn) .... Humans are parasites

Hemp has been used for making plastic (which is lighter, stronger and more resilient than steel) for decades. Hemp seeds are also a fabulous source of assimilable vegetable protein (the best source, in fact), as well a fabulous source of Omega 3 and Omega 6. THC has multiple medicinal properties and can cure a great many diseases. Hemp fibres make excellent textiles and ropes which do not rot, as well as top-quality paper which lasts centuries (the original US constitution was written on hemp paper). It is also used in building materials (isolation). Hemp leaves make excellent and nutritious fodder for cattle, sheep, goats, etc., and can also be used for making biofuel. Since hemp and cannabis not only are robust plants which require no fertilizing and not much watering and require little work, they can grow well even poor soils, and they also enrich poor soils. Thus, cultivating hemp for plastic, food, oils, medicines, textiles, paper, fodder and fuel requires little energy and has enormous advantages over every other kind of crop.

Petroleum comes from plants. So technically both plastics are made from plants.
Aahahahahaha ponder that IBM chemists!
But yeah this is good 'n' junk.

Amazings! Hopefully the companies that produce petroleum-based product won't pool their resources, buy up the patent, and shelf it for 15 years

There's this plant, called Hemp, we can't grow it, but it kind of has a lot of uses. 1 of them is plastic. This IBM thing is a joke. Just another example of how corporations are above the law and we're criminals. Quick note: IBM provided Nazi Germany with the scanning systems to register the bar codes of Jews before killing them. What a great American company!

corporations run the world. and it just got worse when the supreme court allowed corps to contribute as much as they want politicians. they will now decide everything our country does. how can the "small guy" do anything when corps have endless supplies of money to push their agenda.

I have an envelope opener made from 100% corn plastic. Plastic from plants isn't new.

This is fantastic! We use less petroleum AND we get biodegradable plastic bags. This will be a huge green victory if the technology gets employed.

Biodegradable plastic bags have existed for many years - I use them for the compost collection. Plastic made from hemp has existed for decades, too - Porsche uses it for its cars' bodies as it is stronger, lighter, and more resilient than steel.
