the other day we got into an argument here on Current about the little girl who accidentally got shot with her dad's gun. he got it out when he thought he'd heard intruders, and at some point fell asleep. She got it and sadly...the end.

But several of our noble liberals were all talking about how "you gotta keep the gun unloaded, lock itin a box leave the trigger lock on the thing until the last second when you need it."

you have to ask yourself how much time these people had before the intruders broke into the house. I doubt they would have had the time to go unlock the lock box, take the trigger lock off, and then load the gun.

but thank goodness in this case the crooks had enough sense to want to keep out of jail and just run for the hills

Thing is, Curtis, that guns are not a great way to defend your home during a home invasion. Unless you are super mega ex-spy and have your entire house booby-trapped, with guns loaded, cocked and ready to fire at every corner, it is never a good plan. Even then, remember that a weapon does not pick sides... so it can just as easily be used against you.

The only hope in a home invasion, particularly because of the type of criminal that is willing to enter an occupied home, is to get help: Escape and get help, do what this little boy did... Every family needs to have a plan, where everyone understands that if you have a shot at getting out, you go, even if you leave everyone behind, and you get help immediately. Guns at home are not the answer to a Home Invasion -- that response is what gets victims of home invasion killed (usually men - btw) -- that John-Wayne-I'll-Show-You attitude only ends with victims. You fight to get out of the house. Get help if anyone is left behind.

I keep thinking about the incredible presence of mind. Seriously, he had to have grabbed the phone, then his little sister, run to the bathroom and locked the door, then called 911 and ALL OF THIS from a terrified 7 year old!

A future super hero in the making, maybe a cop? a soldier? A pilot? it's astonishing. I doubt if my wife would have remained so calm and kept it together, much less my 8 year old son.
