Who the F- is Carlos Slim?
Carlos Slim was just declared the richest man in the world by Forbes magazine. He has ousted Bill Gates from the top spot, with an estimated wealth at $53.5 billion.
Slim's spokesman refused to confirm the Forbes estimate to the BBC but said:
"We're pleased that he has been considered the best businessman of the world."
Slim made his billions in telecommunications. He also owns restaurants, cement, and financial institutions. In 2008 Carlos Slim bought 6.4% of The New York Times Company.
His companies Telmex, Telcel, and América Móvil have expanded throughout the Americas.
Last year, I visited Colombia. I was surprised to see cable service provided by Telmex. I met a cable guy who worked for the company. He told me his theory of Carlos Slim's plans for world domination.
"Slim is going to purchase every telecommunications firm in Latin America. With this huge subscriber-base he'll be able to compete in the United States"
I know that's fouth-hand information, but you should either protest, or buy thousands of stocks.
I like Carlos Slim for two reasons.
- He made Mexico City's Centro Histórico cool.
- He owns Sanborn's.
Centro Histórico was in decline for decades. In 2000 Slim created the a foundation to revitalize the area. Today, you don't have to worry about getting mugged. The neighborhood has cool bars, cafes, and art openings.
Carlos Slim owns Sanborn's, a chain of restaurants. I really like their soup.
That's what I know about Carlos Slim.

The only reason that Carlos Slim is up there is because Bill Gates donates so much of his money to charity. If you took into account, the money that Bill Gates has given away plus what he currently his net worth would be some were in the 70 something Billion dollar range. I know that its a cop out to say something as gredy as this guy is richer than this guy but the truth is that Carlos Slim is only the richest guy on the planet because he doesnt give a shit about anyone or anything that will make him poorer. So basically he is a greedy self centered souless bastard.

proud that the richest man is mexican even though everyone else is suffering and the country is in poor economic status, not really something to be proud of.

And you base this on what? It is true that Mexico has many problems but they are not as bad as other problems facing other developing countries for example Greece and Dubai. Last time I check Mexico is the 11th largest economy in the world and in many economic reports state that by 2050 the largest economies in the world will be China, India, United States, Brazil, and Mexico. Like I stated before I am proud of the nation of my grandparents. Mexico has come a long way since the economic crisis of 1994 and has emerged as one of the leading economies of the region.

Also, I am not naive I am fully aware that there is a lot of suffering in the world but at the same time I just one man and there is nothing I can do about it is just reality but when there is something good to be proud of out of everything that is bad out there it brings light to people like me. Because knowing that Carlos Slim is the richest person in the world brings a sense of pride in me because the world is changing, a man who was a loser in the past can be a winner in the future.

That's not surprising since Bill Gates announced his plans to transition out of a day-to-day role with Microsoft, effective July 31, 2008 to allow him to devote more time to working with the foundation.
So it makes sense that Bill would move down the list and Carlos would move up since Bill has been donating more and Carlos has been earning more.

Sahuaro, i agree with you. I do not think most people here realize that
1) this is old news, Carlos slim was already the worlds richest man at one point a long time ago
2) He made most of his money through corruption which when Telecommunications in mexico was privatized he appropiated a large proportion of them through his connections
3) He controls all of telecommunications in mexico, forcing high phone and communication rates as well as monopolizing the Wireless industryand just to add to this I am Hispanic (mexican specifically) and while it is one thing to be proud of mexico it is quite another thing to be proud of this.
As any hispanic knows latin america lives in great poverty and in many countries the disparity between rich and poor is incredible.
With people like carlos slim hoarding money, manipulating legislature and being corrupt it these kind of people in mexico that are responsible for the social and economic instability created by drugs and money which keeps so many hungry everydaybarely even able to buy tortillas

Well Bill Gates has been giving away billions of dollars to provide vaccines and other kinds of assistance in development of societies
That's something you can possibly do with it and it's most likely why he slipped down the list of richest men

Yeah, kinda old news. I used to work at a Latin culture museum in San Antonio & he loaned a lot of art to us. He came by for an event and he was very nice. Shook hands with a bunch of us. Great that he is a patron of the arts and is quite the gentleman even if you want to go mad that he has that much change.
