Ringling Brothers beats animals!

PETA has confirmed that Barack, a baby elephant with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, is suffering from a deadly herpes virus that Ringling may have been able to prevent. Barack was not even a year old when Ringling moved him to the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa in December 2009. But only one month later, after performing in Orlando and Jacksonville, Barack was taken off the road because he contracted the deadly endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV).
Stress is believed to be a factor in the development of EEHV infection because it can weaken the immune system, making an elephant susceptible to infectious diseases. If this is the case, Ringling's greed is likely the culprit. The circus has subjected this young elephant to the stress of transport and performances, in which he was surrounded by bullhook-toting trainers as he was trotted around the ring and forced to climb a pedestal.
Death from the herpes virus usually occurs within seven days after an acute onset of symptoms, which include lethargy, swelling of the head and limbs, and a blue discoloration of the tongue. This frightening disease causes massive internal hemorrhaging, typically affects elephants under 10 years of age, and has an 85 percent mortality rate. It's responsible for more than half of all juvenile elephant deaths in North American facilities, and it's possible that Ringling could have prevented baby Barack from catching this horrible virus.

Some animals should not ever be domesticated. I feel sorry for exotic "domesticated" pets because their owners are so out of touch with the nature of the animal, it's just an oddity there strictly for the amusement of the "owner". Humans are too stupid to realize that animals are not like humans, they are operating on a totally different wavelength. They don't care that they make you happy, what looks like a smile probably does not mean joy. Most people don't even know how to take care of their own damned dogs, so why do we think that we can take care of elephants, killer whales, or pandas? If we really find them so amusing, we should find a way to watch them without damaging them, it's not impossible and at least our kids may have a chance to see them.

Because it takes PEOPLE -- regular folks -- and ESPECIALLY parents -- to start raising a stink about this. It can be done. Boycott all circuses that use animals, support the few that use only humans, and spread the word everywhere!
Write letters to the editor. Express yourself, everyone... please.

I really wish those animals would act the way they naturally do in the wild towards the staff. Now THAT would be entertainment.

It's a circus...why is anyone surprised? Did you think they hugged the animals to make them obey?

There ARE animal rights attorneys who are trying their damndest but, believe it or not, it takes the public (people such as you and I) to help make the changes. Spread the word, educate people you know, and ask them to get involved.

Please HELP, then... Email or call your local tv news networks and newspapers, and ask that these horrors be exposed to the general public. Call or email or write to circuses and tell them you cannot attend any of their events, and you wish for them to go the way "Big Apple Circus" began, with humans-only circuses.
Tell people about this, especially those with families. People need to know!

If you're upset about the circuses, please contact your local tv news stations and your local newspapers, and raise a fuss to give this the exposure it so desperately needs.

And so write letters and make phone calls to the circuses you know of, and tell these organizations you won't attend their events. Write to your local newspapers and call your local tv news station, and tell them how you feel the way you do. Demand exposure to these atrocities! Please?

Should this even be a surprise to anyone anymore?
Animal RIGHTS is the name of the game, not animal welfare, and circuses that use animals should be banned. As animaladvocate just wrote, do NOT support circuses that use non-human animals.
