Student loan overhaul seems likely to join Senate health-care bill

Senate Democrats said Thursday that they are inclined to add an overhaul of the nation's student loan program to the final health-care bill.

The move would create a potential double victory for President Obama, who has championed both causes as among domestic priorities. And Senate Majority Whip Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) said Thursday, "There was a stronger feeling for including" the education proposal. Some senators disagreed with the strategy, Durbin said, adding that a final decision has yet to be reached.

Under the student loan proposal, subsidies that now support private lenders would be shifted to other student assistance programs, including Pell Grants for families struggling to afford college tuition. "Some of the things accomplished here are really going to help a lot of people across America," Durbin said.

    • Student loans have become victim to the Wall Street corrupt practices of reselling debt. As such, these accounts contain jacked up interest rates and fees that the borrowers never agreed to, let alone the fact that the borrowers have no agreement with the new owners of these debts. Owners also often do not have the paper work on file that proves the original contract and it terms even exist.

So, if borrowers ever have the opportunity to question that they actually owe this money, the new owners of the debt are unlikely to be able to prove it. All you have to do is question your lender, which you have the right to do by law, to provide you with a break down of what you have paid and how much you owe, and a copy of your terms of agreement that you signed.

Simply stop paying the debt. They may try to garnish wages or seize your tax return if it defaults and is federally guaranteed. But when you get to question them in court they have no leg to stand on and there's a good chance the debt will be thrown out. You'll know this going in when they fail to produce your original contract and a record of what you've paid.

If you want to stick it to Wall Street and the banking industry then do this. Question your student loans. Take them to court. Make them prove you owe them anything.

jonraymond, i totally agree, but on another (not too far away) topic, i also agree with the controls over banks re: overdraft fees...in principle. i appreciate the opt-in choice given to us, because sometimes at the end of the month, i am willing to pay a fee for what i consider a 'short-term' loan...so i can eat. as opposed to the soldier on the psa's who racked up so many fees due to being charged every time he used his card, i have found it easier (though not by choice) to make one withdrawal, with one penalty fee, and then pay/buy the necessities.

    • There is an unbalance within our nation regarding percentage of underinsured and the monetary value spent on healthcare. Those w/o insurance have a greater chance for non-production due to inability for medical treatment and those insured make for over 60% of all bankruptcies in America. In short, in the grand scheme of things, we think of healthcare, we think of a quarter percent of our population underinsured, largely because of unemployment, largely because of lack of education. Is it productive for the rest of America to live in a partly unhealthy and uneducated society that doesn’t contribute to the wellbeing of society as a whole? All the while, annaully, billions of dollars in financial aid, which includes pell grants and privatized student loans aren’t being used. I smell an opportunity.

    • This is exactly why the Health Care Bill can not pass. There will be too much junk that has nothing to do with healthcare.

What the hell does Student Loans have to with lowering healthcare costs.

Obama and the rest of his sheep are an embarasment to the country.

    • I don't care if they staple this bill to Michelle's ass to get it to pass it is good legislation! Student loans are one of the biggest scams in the country to keep the rich in power. Rich people don't take out loans to go to school and many poor people have no choice. Once a student graduates and is debt laden, then they are essentially the perfect money slave. A slave to debt and compounding interest. Why should the banks profit off of Tax money when it is being disbursed back to citizens? It is an unneeded middleman and the cost savings that could be achieved is in the hundreds of billions!!

    • This sucks. They want to tack on some bill to health care. Since healthcare is partisan, no one will cross the aisle because of college spending. Shouldn't we discuss that separately?

    • At this point, I almost don't care that Democrats have to pull bullshit cheat tactics to get things done.

If this is what they have to do to stop the fraud and the criminals preying off our most essential institutions, so be it.

    • Student loan vendors and credit card people prey on the weak. If you are retarded enough to pay 25% on your loan than you probably shouldnt be getting an education in the first place. Try working at mcdonalds to pay for it or joining the military.

Right, because we should live in a country where your only options to higher education if you're not rich are to saddle yourself with debt or join the military.

A full-time job at McDonalds would net you $20,000 a year. At UC's, which are the cheap public schools now, that's not even enough to get you through a single year, let alone paying for rent and other basic necessities.

So yeah, if you can not eat, live on the street and somehow fit school into a full-time work schedule, you can go to college.

Meanwhile, all the serious economies in the world like Japan, leave us all behind because they're not loaded with fucking morons with no sense of priorities.

Mcdonalds paid for part of my friends tuition since he worked there from 16 through he graduated college. I know its not glamerous, but its an education. Your right about priorties in this country. People have forgotten the importance of setting and achieving goals.
