Transport secretary Lord Adonis said that public consultation on the £30bn network will begin in the autumn.

He said the first stages of work on the network would not start until 2017, with the first section between London and Birmingham due to open by 2026 at a cost of £15.8bn to £17.4bn.

In a statement to the House of Lords, Adonis said a second phase would eventually see high speed trains run to Manchester, Sheffield, Leeds, Newcastle and Edinburgh along a 'Y-shaped' network although no time frame was set for this more extensive network.

The transport secretary said the proposals would slash journey times from London to Birmingham to between 30 and 50 minutes.

Ok, so do you think £15 billion is a tad bit much to lay down a few new tracks, just for an extra half an hour or so off your journey? I've never travelled from London to Birmingham so i wouldn't know.
