    • We don't have to believe any other website but the Red Cross website itself. Only 15% of the money goes to the programs and the other 85% goes to administration. Not rocket science just have to read the donation page of the Red Cross's website. The thing I can't get my head around is that with the money that was so lovingly donated they could have rebuilt the whole island of Haiti. Why, if the Red Cross has a stock pile of money is there so much human suffering to this day. They knew that disease would set in very soon after and yet no more money to just simply get clean water to the people. What a shame and they keep suckering more people everytime there is a tragedy because they have all our dollars to advertise for more doanations.

    • I realize that they can't help it if they collect more than is needed and that more spending will be done in Haiti, but why are they still airing commercials encouraging people to donate to Haiti if they already have such a huge surplus of money?

    • Look, the Red Cross raised $255 million in specified contributions for Haiti. They have spent $80 Million and it is their intention to spend the remaining ammount in HAITI once they have the logistics figured out. this is to prevent them from WASTING the money. Some would have you believe that this charity is just taking that money from the Haiti donors and arbitrarily deciding where to spend the money. That is a lie. I can come to no other conclusion than that is a lie..an intentional lie. I did a simple Google search for this and found numerous links which will give any non LAZY, and honest person the true story. This one posted here is not.

    • The Red Cross is doing a good job. They are not the Obama administraion who think if you just throw money at it things will get better. The Red Cross will be there for years to come and that money will be spent in a conservative fashion.

    • Follow the sources back to the original. This article is a joke and should not be given any credit because it is not factual.

    • so what, they're preparing for the next big thing. and hey looked what happened after haiti, the earthquakes in south america and turkey. look who was prepared.

and honestly, 80 mil can rebuild haiti. With room for food and water and medical expenses as well. there is only 10 million people in haiti for crying out loud

if people can't manage as much money thats been pouring in for 3-4 million people affected then i say there's a problem with letting the haitian government touching any of that money

of the 3 mil living in the port au prince area and with 225,000ish dead, not all of them had everything destroyed. not to mention, the 80 mil is only a fraction of the other millions that have gone into haiti not from the red cross. the issue in haiti is getting manpower on the ground to get things set up and running

    • Current needs to take this crap down. There needs to be some journalistic standards for making these claims. Yes, ALL the money collected for Haiti hasn't been used yet. Since the relief efforts may take a decade, I think we can all agree this makes sense to BUDGET the money.

The blogger who wrote this story did NOT do any research to determine what's going on with Red Cross donations. Instead, they looked at the total donated, subtracted the total used TO DATE (which is now $110 million), and declared "scandal."

This type of garbage will quickly destroy any value Current adds to the blogosphere.

because you don't agree, Current is going to lose credibility....? PLEEEAAAASSE.

There's nothing wrong with this story. The Red Cross has been under the microscope for quite a while now.

They've been pimping the "CROSS" like TV evangelist do for way to long.

    • I am not a big fan of the red cross..but that sounds about right..please remember there are 'administrative' costs..sending all that $80 million cost money as well.and those people are not 100% volunteers..SAD

    • is the $255 million actual funds collected....or pledged? is it possible that
they only sent what was actually collected to date? i would welcome more data
before implying that the 'red cross' can not account for $175 million.

That's $175 mil. Read the article. It is true. The Red Cross decided all by themselves that the earthquakes victims and the island of Haiti only needed $80 million for relief, so they then took it upon themselves to keep the rest for other future emergencies, despite the fact that donors sent that those funds had them earmarked for Haiti. Now if in fact the Red Cross has that kind of authority in the handling of special monies sent to specific crisis and disaster relief programs, maybe people should reconsider sending relief to Haiti through the Red Cross..

hammywill, read the article. The Headline is not completely misleading and intended to be inflammatory without merit. It's true. This is just what worries people, like me, when we're ask to reach down in our pockets and help out.

This is not the first time that I've heard about the Red Cross abuses their authority. They've got a reputation and record of doing the same thing all over the continent of Africa.

Shame on the Red Cross. That's not your money to keep or to decide who else it should go to..

    • keithponder:

I did read the article, and since I am not a numbskull, I also did some of my own research instead of listening to a single source. The article itself even alludes to this. The Red Cross has only spent 80 mil. of the raised Haiti Funds and the rest is going to be spent IN HAITI when logistics and other things are worked out. Unless you are advocating simply dropping cash over the island, then it seems to me that it's quite alright that they are not pressured into spending 250 mil. dollars in one weekend to satisfy your paranoia.
