Lets assume that this is propaganda, in that it is definitely meant to "propogate" a particular view point.
But since the story is consistent lets also assume that its relatively true.
This seems to be a pretty straightforward application of "three cups of tea" and it seems like it is working and could extract the marines and every other "foreigner" out of Afghanistan leaving a country at least as stable as the one we invaded, perhaps with the added advantage that the ones in power and the ones who will stay in power don't want to blow up skyscrapers and definitely don't want Europeans trying to run there lives.
"with the first cup of tea you are an honoured guest, with the second you are a friend, with the third you are family and we will do anything for family even die. Take time for three cups of tea."
Thirty years ago most of the tribal leaders thought we were on their side, Perhaps with the tea offensive we could get back to letting them run their lives without fearing for our own.

I don't like war, but I like smart soldiers who know what their goal is and how to achieve it. At least on paper these marines are on the right track.

I guess I don't really understand the tone of this posting. The article was informative and a good read, but this has much more to do with the military's issues with integration and joint operations than anything else.
The strategies the "rogue" marine unit is using aren't even out of line...I mean they're good ideas, so why the negative context?

The marines are being allowed a little latitude to accomplish the mission given. The word "rogue" the way it is being used may be closer to what Sarah Palin is doing. However, the Marines have a very strict code, and they don't take it lightly.

But I'm sure you will admit it is a catchy headline.

This war is not a disgrace! We fight this war to try and rid the world of Alqueda (sic). American soldiers have given their lives to do what the President of the United States orders them to do. We are in the right country. We are trying to work with Pakistan to have them deal with terrorist in their country.
They have vowed to destroy us, we fight now, or we wait for another 9/11 to happen. Yes, Afghanistan was linked to 9/11. Clinton back in the 90's send Tomahawk missiles to destroy their training camps. He just happened to miss Bin Laden back then.

The ONLY reason why we are fighting in Afghanistan is to clear the way for the building of a pipeline (bringing natural gas and oil from the Caspian Sea Basin to major ports on the Arabian Sea), to protect the building thereof, and then to protect the pipeline, which implies that we will have our military in Afghanistan for decades. This war is for bringing more profits to Big Oil, nothing more.

I know that I am a bit biased here and inhumane and disgusting things happen during war. There is no excuse for brutality but I find much of the information in this article to be pure propaganda. I tried to follow up on this story and find some collaborating evidence but I couldn't find any. This doesn't mean it's not true just highly unlikely.

I hear 'ya, but the fact that it was published in the Washington Post would give it more credibility than if it were published in some tabloid.

Jon, thanks for posting the full story. I am still having a hard time accepting the level of brutality that the article is suggesting these Marines are engaging in. But, I firmly believe that any and all U.S. service men and women guilty of war crimes should be tried in an international court. If they are guilty then they are a disgrace to a proud and heroic institution.

The entire war is a disgrace. The Marines act on orders except maybe these guys. But still they are put into an impossible predicament. It is our leaders and government that are at fault and are a disgrace to all humanity let alone America and it's heritage.

Sure, but sources can be mendacious. Think Saddam Hussein trying to buy Yellow Cake from Niger - the information was totally false, but there were many sources relaying it.
