    • The M1 BREACHER, is going to be a waste in Afghanistan. It is designed as a mine sweeping vehicle designed more for the open deserts of Iraq and not the mountain terrain of eastern Afghanistan. It was designed to supported heavy mechanized infantry unit and armored calvary not the light infantry division that are being deployed this spring and summer. The Taliban are know more for rocket attacks then remote IED's. It's just going to be a fat, heavy, beautiful target. I want better armour on my HMVV, or better yet lighter more effective personal body armor and better air support.

Ha, Ha...yeah you got me there, I surely wouldn't want to be digging in the ground with a K-Bar looking for mines. Dont get me wrong the M1 Breacher is going to be extremely useful and save countless lives of both soldiers and civilians. It's just the this summer campaign is going to be in the mountain eastern provinces and the M1 lacks the necessary mobility. At least that my humble ignorant opinion. Also as far as I know neither the 10th or the 101st is going to receive any of the prototype M1's.

Thanks for filling me in on the M1 use in Afghanistan. Yeah, it was hairy. I'm sure you've seen pictures of how we did it. One squad at a time lined up to each other and you probe at a 45 degree angle left to right until you reach the guy next to you and so on.

I remember as a child watching news reels of the Korean war and the image that always stuck in my mind was the anguish and pain of the U.S. soldiers freezing in sub zero weather attempting to dig foxholes and hides in rock solid from soil. Also I remember the endless stacks of dead north korean soldiers piled along the sides of the road. The Korean war is truly the forgotten war and it's a shame. I am ashamed that I don't know more about it. Just a vague memory of fierce winter combat against a determined enemy and the constant threat of Chinese Red Army crossing the border to engage the U.S. Military if they advanced to far north.

The Chosin Reservoir battle (called "the Frozen Chosin) by the GIs who were there was in 1950 and I wasn't in the Army until 1951, but we sure as hell heard about it. You might also recall how President Truman fired Gen. Douglas MacArthur as FECOM (Far East Command) commander because MacArthur wanted to invade China. There are several good films that come up on the History Channel about the Korean War. They're titled "Korea--The Forgotten War." Few people realize 56,000 Americans died in the Korean war that lasted only 2 1/2 years and 58,000 in the Vietnam War that lasted 10 years.
