Salaries soar for heads of British universities

A Guardian investigation reports on how a large number of University vice-chancellors pay has risen higher than the PM paycheck and is "far outstripping growth in average lecturers' pay,". This sound like a serious issue since I've heard/seen a number of university lecturers forced to leave courses because the university couldn't pay their wages (however not sure if that uni is on the investigations list) and there are building complaints over the rise in tuition fees.

The article quotes Sally Hunt from the lecturers' union, who says there's been a high amount of ridicule to how much the senior university staff receive in pay rises, which the newspapers claims has doubled and tripled in certain cases.

"Nicola Dandridge, chief executive of Universities UK, which represents vice-chancellors, said todaythat universities were "highly complex businesses". "Salaries of university heads in the UK are comparable with those in competitor countries and are also in line with remuneration packages for directors and chief executives of public and private organisations of a similar size. As the role and importance of higher education have grown, so have the demands on the offices of vice-chancellors.""

If you're going into or still in university, what are your experiences with the costs, plus does this investigation effect your view on uni life?

    • funny, always seems to be the ones at the top, who do the least work, get paid the most.
And they were talking about universities having to up tuition fees due to lack of funds, well I paid £3,145 a year to listen to a lecturer read from a powerpoint presentation with information they had derived from a book, I left university with nothing but contempt!
