No, This Is Why You're Fat!

In a classic case of contradictory government policy the above pyramids clearly show the inverse relationship between federal government agriculture subsidies and federal nutrition recommendations. Originally published in 2007 by Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) in Good Medicine Magazine to outline the committee's concern about the impending farm bill. The graphic recently resurfaced in food security circles and found its way to the Economix Blog @ The New York Times.

Click through (at the link) for why this is important and some more nifty graphs that help explain the obesity epidemic.

The original PCRM article explains the regulatory discrepancy that results in an obese nation.

The Farm Bill...governs what children are fed in schools and what food assistance programs can distribute to recipients. The bill provides billions of dollars in subsidies, much of which goes to huge agribusinesses producing feed crops, such as corn and soy, which are then fed to animals. By funding these crops, the government supports the production of meat and dairy products--the same products that contribute to our growing rates of obesity and chronic disease. Fruit and vegetable farmers, on the other hand, receive less than 1 percent of government subsidies.
The government also purchases surplus foods like cheese, milk, pork, and beef for distribution to food assistance programs--including school lunches. The government is not required to purchase nutritious foods.

(Despite an early pledge to cut big ag subsidies Obama caved to the power of the industry and reversed this plan.)

The author of the post goes on to say:

...the average 18-year-old today is 15 pounds heavier than the average 18 year-old in the late 1970s. Adults have put on even more weight during that period. The average woman in her 60s is 20 pounds heavier than the average 60-something woman in the late 1970s. The average man in his 60s is 25 pounds heavier. When you look at the chart, you start to understand why.

Now, imagine what those charts would look like if mixed fruit and vegetable farms were subsidized at the same rates as meat and dairy operations.

    • Not calling any of my friends fat but I would suggest everyone watching or "KNOWING" what they are eating. Good Movies Food Inc. Killer at Large, Botany of Desire, Sweet Misery. Most those movies are on Netflix as well

    • I'm a thick girl, but it drives me ABSOLUTELY INSANE people heavy people are, like, "I'm so fat. I don't know what to do! Hand me those donuts." Uh, no you fat fuck. How about you put a salad in your mouth? I don't think people who are obese should get handicap parking stickers, either. I really hope I don't come off as a bitch, because I'm really not. But I know why I'm at the weight I am now. I don't blame it on McDonalds. People need to take responsibility and blame it on themselves.

    • What happened to the 1990's skinny, shaved head, peroxide blond declaring that we can eat 9 baked potatoes to 1 slice of cheese, and won't get fat? Now its' the absolute opposite. Eat as much fat as you want, but don't eat carbs. The latter is disgusting. People who eat more than 4 ounces of meat a day have gross intestines!

    • (Calories eaten) > (Calories expended) combined with low protein diets and little to no resistance exercise is why you're fat.

Those pyramids really have nothing to do with it (nor does meat/dairy consumption as the article would have you believe), but they're interesting none the less. Unfortunately, despite all the subsidies for meat, the healthy meats/cuts are still rather expensive.

Fruits and veggies aren't very expensive as is, so I doubt cost is the reason many people pass them up for other foods.

    • Here's an idea. They sholud tax the shit out of Big Macs and Whoppers, bacon, pizza, everything else that makes people fat, just like they do my cigarettes, to pay for their socialized medicine. If my bad behavior is taxable, everyone's should be. You don't want to pay for my lung cancer, well I don't want to pay for your diabetes.

good point, though I disagree with nearly ALL taxes, I still agree that if they insist on the so called 'sin' taxes, alcohol and tobacco, the other sins should be taxed.... like GLOTTONY for example.

    • Government aside here... If Americans would think for themselves they'd be alot better off. Fast food is bad - If food (including what is in the grocery stores) has an ingredient in it you cant pronounce? Its bad and shouldnt be ingested. I'm afraid we've gotten lazy... Dont want to do the work involved to make a healthy meal at home, Dont want to do the exercise required to stay healthy etc.... Food that is good for you does not have to cost a fortune (i've made plenty, cheap & healthy meals) but it does require some effort to make it happen.

One last note- I read an article one time that 50 years ago the average size for a dinner plate was 9in. Now? They are 13in or bigger. So ofcourse the portion sizes were putting on our plates have gotten bigger. That doesnt help the obesity problem either.

    • Yes, let us blame the Gov't. for allowing Americans to raise fat children. Of course it is not the parents responsibility to monitor the diets of their children! Let us find someone to blame? The fat bastards stuffing their faces, while watching Jerry Springer and Oprah, can surely not be held accountable!

    • It is not because of the steroids in commercial meat. I mean... I know you didn't say that... But that's not what it is... No, it couldn't be the STEROIDS used to raise commercial meat. Nope. Couldn't be that. It most certainly has nothing to do with that. Or the by-products (like ammonia) that remain in commercial meat. Nope, it has nothing do with that either...

You build your own sandwich at Subway. No one is forced to add unhealthy crap to their veg-e-sandwich. Back in the seventy's I remember nutrition being taught in school. Sad that most people know very little about the products they consume three or more times a day. People need to learn to cook again. Heating pre-made crap in the microwave is not cooking and very well may pose other health issues by changing the chemical properties of High fructose corn syrup.

    • also, if I may point out, Americans have adopted a rather sedentary lifestyle with very little activity in favor for whats simplest, fastest, or the least amount of work.

Without question you are right. This is exactly what the government is about. They tell us how to live but then they do exactly the opposite. Big money is too powerful. They have people fighting for the Agricultural big business PROFIT. Their cruel inhumane actions to animals only help to make that BIG money. Go to humansociety.org for the proof. The government continues to support their efforts to make that money. What a healthy America it would be if they DID give more money to farmers who grow healthy vegetables. This would help to make sure our children ate good food. Not the food that is jacked up on hormones and is still acceptable by the USDA.
Why is it every fight has someone screaming conservatives vs liberals? Thank you NuclearLullaby for your inaccurate opinion that includes all conservatives. I do appreciate your effort to voice your thoughts though. I'm actually very open minded and would love to hear new ideas of how to go about anything. Just don't make me responsible for everyone else and their stupid actions or inaction. How about common sense? I really wish people would use their brain. Instead of asking everyone else around them to give to their cause which is themselves. Yes many people eat complete sh*t for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Just wait till they make obesity a disease. We'll all be paying for our neighbors gastric bypass surgery once this health care bill passes. It's about no responsibility for actions or inaction. So should we not help farmers of any type? Would our country survive if they stopped the funding? Most of the country wouldn't have a clue of how to take care of themselves. All they know is go to the grocery and purchase what they want on their magic plastic card. If the grocery is gone their gonna come to your house and raid what u or I have. Believe it. The government already takes from your check before you even get it. Under the guise of we're helping. Then you continue to pay again and again. People have learned from it and they will take if it comes down to survival. Why do you think the government is so driven to pass this health care bill even though they don't know whats in it. It comes down to the liberals vs the conservatives doesn't it. It seem like that was how this conversation started. Maybe when they're willing to read a bill and actually tell us what's in it I'll be more "open to new ideas & making things the way they should be, or at least a way that make a little more sense" I'm about being a strong willed American that wants the best for our country. I believe in our constitution and ALL of my rights as an American. Too many men died fighting for them and I don't believe in elitists telling me what I need to do or how to live my life. Especially when they don't follow their own advice.

John, I fear that you have hit a sour note. Could the obesity problem in America be due to the massive intake of pizza (extra cheese), bacon, and sausage? Biggy fries and Big Macs, with a shake? 3 to 5 big meals a day while reclining on the sofa adding on pounds. Of course, fat people are not responsible for their weight, it is just another problem that the Gov't. must solve. Excuse me , i must go purge!

    • Everything contradicts everything else at some point & you are left to find what's true & right ! In a world of careless dumb people, even common sense is a contradiction for most!!! It shocks me really how stupid & backwards some things in this world actually are! I guess half the reason a lot of things are so stupidly back words is the fact that a lot of people go a long with whatever lies & deceptions they are fed! (Conservatives!) Their minds aren't open to new ideas & to making things the way they should be,or at least a way that make a little more sense! Lately I've seen some very weird food ads like a few for that fake sugar stuff that seems so popular now, & even one the seems to talk about food starch without actually saying much of anything about it really!!! Food prices will always be a bit backwards from how many think they should be,but that's not to say there aren't a few good reasons why! Some healthy stuff (NOT ALL) actually cost more to produce then non healthy stuff!!! Food costs in general are constantly going up,due to things like gas prices, the economy (local, national & global!) & products used in whatever the product you buy is! Some times a problem at one factory can affect prices on several items that don't come directly from that factory! When I go into a food store it honestly makes me sick what some people's carts look like!!! They will pretty much have a cart full of TV dinners,Soda & red meat!!! So honestly the whole backwards thing seen with the subsidies here actually has more to do with human stupidity & lack of common sense, then it does a government issue! The American culture is based strongly on supply & demand,so naturally because of the American diet Cattle farmers make more money then fruit farmers!!!

    • oh, good post! why do we NOT subsidize produce like nuts and fruit but cattle ranching and pig farms HOG up all the funding... not that any of these groups SHOULD get any subsities, but if they are getting them, why not the good ones?

    • This is why it's more expensive to eat healthy, because the government doesnt want you eating healthily, and why do people think that may be?

young healthy people in America? Perish the thought they might be so free from health concerns that they may organize, and ask for social reform? No give them more tv and buy 1 get 1 free soda when they buy a large big mac thanks to subsidized corn.

It really isn't more expensive to eat healthy. Quality beans can be bought for around $1-2 a pound, sometimes cheaper. A pound of beans contains way more calories than anything you can buy for that price at a fast food restaurant or in the freezer isle. Bananas go for 19 cents a pop at the Trader Joe's near my house. This list could go on and on...

The problem is it is hard to eat healthy if you're lazy.Fast food, restaurants, the freezer isle, pre-prepared/processed food...most of it is not great for you.
