Are Israel and the US about to break up?

Last week, as Biden was in Israel discouraging settlement building, the government announced 1600 new settlements in East Jerusalem. The Obama Adminstration is more than a little miffed. And though Netanyahu's government has apologized for the *timing* of the announcement, they don't seem near to reversing the decision.
From Voice of America:
"The Israeli leader said Israel has been building in mostly Arab East Jerusalem for the past 40 years and no Israeli leader during that time has stopped it. Mr. Netanyahu said building Jewish neighborhoods on the land, in his words, in no way has hurt the Arabs of East Jerusalem, and he said the construction did not come at their expense."
(Link: http://www1.voanews.com/english/news/middle-east/Israel-Tries-to-Defuse-Crisis-w...)
So what happens if nobody gives? Is Israel really in a position to distance itself from the US? Is the Obama Administration really in a position to risk its closest ally in the Middle East? Or is this a bunch of hullabaloo over nothing?

Israel and the US are not about to break up.
This stupid insanity will exist until the United States collapses.
Americans are too stupid and uneducated to understand the source of the problem, and intelligence in the US government can't stand up to the political bullshit that has allowed these Jewish racist lunatics do this for 60 years.
There has been no progress for TWO GENERATIONS. This will continue until the US empire dissolves and China/Europe/Russia - one of them replaces it.

Al-Qaida-inspired group claims responsibility for attack from Gaza - the third in 24 hours after two rockets land near Sderot; comes as EU foreign policy chief Ashton visits Strip.
Israel warned of a harsh response on Thursday afternoon after a Thai greenhouse worker was killed when a Kassam rocket fired by Gaza terrorists exploded in the Netiv Ha’asara area.
The man, in his 30s, was evacuated to Ashkelon’s Barzilai Hospital, where doctors were forced to pronounce him dead.
A small Islamist faction calling itself Ansar al-Sunna claimed responsibility for the attack.
In a statement e-mailed to reporters in Gaza, the al-Qaida-inspired faction said the attack was a response to Israel's "Judaization" of Islamic holy places in Jerusalem and elsewhere in the West Bank.A second group, the Aksa Martyrs Brigades, also later claimed responsibility.
Vice Premier Silvan Shalom warned that the attack would lead to a strong reaction, and said that Hamas was ultimately responsible.
“It is severe escalation,” said Shalom in remarks broadcast on Army Radio. “Israel will not return to the situation of before Operation Cast Lead. The response will be particularly fierce...I hope Hamas will learn a lesson.”
The attack came on the same day as a visit to Gaza by Europe's top diplomat, EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who had just crossed into the territory when the rocket was fired.
"I condemn any kind of violence. We have got to find a peaceful solution to the issues and problems," she said. She was the most senior international official to visit Gaza in more than a year.'
Check out "al qaeda: inspired" -- al qaeda in arabic is HQ. It's all Islam, all the time. Every Islamic group shares the same ideology, the same text, the same teachings. It's all Islam, and Islam teaches kill the Jews (and the Christians and all non-believers.)
Why does the world give its tacit approval to Muslims killing Jews, but recoils in revulsion at Jewish self-defense?
If Muslims are firing missiles at the Jews.
The Jews should be firing bigger, deadlier missiles at the Muslims.
Hamas has called for a new intifada, a new war against the Jewish people.

Barack Obama’s deliberate, willful, and racist contempt for white people and especially Jews by Bill Levinson
The front page feature of today’s Wall Street Journal, “Obama’s New Partner: Al Sharpton,” tells us everything we need to know about Barack Obama’s character, integrity, and fitness for public office. Al Sharpton has no more place in or near the Oval Office than David Duke of the Ku Klux Klan or Tom Metzger of the White Aryan Resistance. Obama’s decision to partner with this individual is, however, totally consistent with the racist content in Dreams From My Father, membership in a racist (as shown by its standing ovation for Michael Pfleger’s “There were a whole lot of white people crying”) church, Jeremiah Wright’s blood libels of both the United States and Israel, and 9/11 denier Van Jones.
It is already well known that Obama (and Hillary Clinton, and adulterer John Edwards) appeared at the 2007 meeting of Al Sharpton’s National Action Network: arguably a hate group like the Ku Klux Klan or White Aryan Resistance as shown by its conduct at Freddy’s Fashion Mart, a Jewish owned store in Harlem. Just as the Klan once threatened Black people who moved into white neighborhoods, or opened businesses in white neighborhoods, the National Action Network, under Al Sharpton’s leadership and supervision, screamed racial epithets and even threatened to burn the store down. A deranged individual who acted on the NAN’s hate speech later did set the store on fire, much like a lone wolf white supremacist acting on verbal sewage from the likes of Duke or Metzger.
Wikipedia offers the following definitions of hate organizations and hate speech.
A hate group is an organized group or movement that advocates physical or verbal aggression toward or refusal to interact with persons on the basis of those persons’ possession and/or exhibition of a certain characteristic.
…Dr. Ehud Sprinzak, an expert on terrorism and hate crimes, argues that verbal violence is “the use of extreme language against an individual or a group that either implies a direct threat that physical force will be used against them, or is seen as an indirect call for others to use it.” Sprinzak argues that verbal violence is often a substitute for real violence, and that the verbalization of hate has the potential to incite people who are incapable of distinguishing between real and verbal violence to engage in actual violence.'
From where we sit, the National Action Network qualifies as a hate group every bit as repugnant as the Klan and White Aryan Resistance, and its conduct at Freddy’s Fashion Mart meets the above definition of hate speech. In addition, a deranged lone actor heeded the NAN’s “indirect call for others to use [physical force]” on the “greedy Jew bastard” and “white interloper”–the latter from Sharpton himself.

Palin writes in a statement provided by an aide:
The Obama Administration reaches out to some of the world’s worst regimes in the name of their engagement policy. America and our allies watch as sanctions are eased on Cuba. Letters are written to Iran’s mullahs only to see that regime start killing protestors in the streets of Tehran. Envoys are sent to North Korea as they continue to defy the world’s demand to give up their nuclear weapons. The Burmese military junta’s representative is allowed to travel to our nation's capital. The President’s envoy for Sudan talks about giving that genocidal regime “gold stars,” while the President shakes hands with Venezuela’s tyrannical leader. In the midst of all this embracing of enemies, where does the Obama Administration choose to escalate a minor incident into a major diplomatic confrontation? With Iran, Cuba, Sudan, North Korea or Burma? No. With our treasured ally, Israel.
Last October, Secretary of State Clinton recognized Israel's desire for peace in the Middle East and praised Israel's “unprecedented” concessions for agreeing to halt settlement construction in the West Bank, a concession that did NOT include halting construction of apartments for Jews in Jerusalem. Even last week after planned construction was announced, Vice President Biden still expressed “appreciation” for the “significant” steps taken by the Israeli government to address this minor issue. Now, however, we see the Obama Administration has decided to escalate, make unilateral demands of Israel, and threaten the very foundation of the US-Israel relationship. This is quickly leading to the worst crisis in US-Israel relations in decades, and yet this did not have to happen. More importantly, it needs to stop before it spirals out of control. Vice President Biden should rein in the overheated Obama Administration rhetoric and chill the political spin masters' fire as they visit the Sunday media shows to criticize Israel.
Once again, the Obama Administration is missing the boat on a very, very important issue. They need to go back to the basics and acknowledge Palestinian leaders have not progressed any peace process since President Obama was elected. As Israel makes concessions (and is still criticized by the Obama Administration), Arab leaders are just sitting back waiting for the White House to further pressure Israel. The Obama Administration needs to open its eyes and recognize that it is only Iran and her terrorist allies that benefit from this manufactured Israeli controversy. Vice President Biden was actually right when he said last week, before the construction announcement, that “one necessary precondition for progress is that the rest of the world knows...there is absolutely no space between the United States and Israel when it comes to security.” Right now, thanks to the Obama Administration, there is a chasm. It's time for President Obama to push the reset button on our relations with our ally Israel.

I hate to break it to you, but your quoting one of the biggest losers the United States has ever seen. Sarah Palin should be reason enough for government officials be required to take several intelligence tests, especially on subjects of history and cultural geography. Israel's pursuit to build in occupied territories is a great insult to the initiative of bringing peace to the region. Israel holds the West Bank and Gaza Strip with walls that closed the Palestinians in. Israel litters the place with check-points, which is a way controlling what resources the Palestinians are able to obtain.
You want allege that Palestinians are not able to form a civil society, well look no further then the Israeli government that determines how much food, oil, medicine, clothes and other products that people inside the walls of the West Bank and Gaza Strip will get. You want to allege that Israel would not enforce an ethnic cleansing of Palestinians with apartheid if the Muslims would stop shooting over rockets and allowing suicide bombers to kill innocent Israelis; then take a step back and examine the situation for what it truly is--- the Israel government is heavily funded and well armed, with latest artillery, large tanks and bull-dozers, so in reality, they truly have the strong and brutal force; Israel is demanding more territory "back", leaving nothing for Palestinians, stripping them of dignity, destroying homes and entire communities, killing innocent men, women, children and elderly, all with the help of their big guns and bull-dozers-- Palestinians with their home-made bombs and home-made suicide jackets are shooting in the dark, trying to kill how ever many Israelis they can in retaliation of what the Zionist movement of Israel has done to them.
The Muslims would not be shooting rockets and killing themselves if Israel did not blockade Palestinians into ghettos, ration their resources and clear out communities. This is not what Islam is about. But when it seems a group of people have targeted Muslims and are attempting to ethnically cleanse them out of existence, Jihad is called in order to fight for survival. Do not get that mixed up in some twisted reality that Palin would like to live in.

The Muslim dream
Obama is fighting the Islamofascist's jihad against the Jews. The US is backing the same horse it fought against during World War II. Stunning. Instead of fighting against nazism and racism, Obama has joined the fight of the Muslim Mufti al Husseini.
Obama's anti-semitism is well documented in this book.http://www.amazon.com/dp/1439189307?tag=atlasshrugs-20&camp=14573&creati...

So you've got a picture of some group of Muslims that support the Nazis in some way, and your alleging that all Muslims must support this idea. How simple minded of you. Lets examine this moment in time when Jews in Europe were persecuted by the Nazis; rounded up, sent to concentration camps, blocked in to little ghettos where their food and resources were rationed. After the war ended, the Zionist movement pressed ahead, calling for all Jews to return to the promise land. Strange that after being persecuted, it is now the Jews holding the guns and driving the tanks, blocking in the Palestinians into ghettos, rationing their food and resources. To support Zionism now, to me, is like supporting the Nazi movement of WWII. Same idea; one supreme race that wishes to ethnically cleanse the world of another race of people.
I can only wish that Jews and Muslims, and people of all creeds can one day agree to have their differences but to live in peace with one another, without attempting to over-power each other. If only we could disarm all sides, to cause all sides to confront each other with civil debate, rather then brutal might.

Out of curiosity, does God own Mars, Jupiter, Saturn.... the galaxy and all other solar systems? If so, does that mean we humans can do what we will do these planets and claim resources and territories because of our God given rights? It seems religion allows people to claim entitlement over nature when it is apparent that no material of this universe can truly be owned by any type of people, no matter their beliefs; so quoting scripture is irrelevant with regard to discussing people rights to live on any piece of land. Not one type of belief is deemed worthy of superiority and control of nature's land and resources. People must accept living with those they differ with.

Over 80% of Israeli Jews and Christians came from Iraq, Yemen, Morrocco, Libya, Spain and other countries where they were stripped of all possessions and burned out. They are as native to the region as any Native American is to the Dakotas.
800,000 people, roughly the same number as the Palestinians who left thinking their friends would wipe out the Jews in 67 and 72/3.
Another 100,000 came from Russia as defectors in the 70's (mostly to live with relatives who had always been there) and maybe 100,000 came as orphans in boats from the Holocaust.
As many as 50,000 secular Russian Communists came with Jews they had married in the 70's as well and they have a really high crime rate.
And when Iran became revolting hundreds of thousands of Iranian Jews fled, some to Israel but most to downtown LA.
These are refugees.
When is someone going to speak up for them?
Palestinians recieve more aid per capita than any other nation in the world and they haven't taught their kids anything except how to hate.

I am so amazed at how many absolute Morons are asking why the US has never asked Jews from Israel to join them in attacking Muslims on the ground!!!!! In fact they always ask the opposite of us and we almost always hold back unless attacked. Or why we weren't in Nam (because we were in our own war in 67 and had just formed???)
OMG a caveman could figure that out.
All operations including IDF and Mossad against Muslim targets are absolutely covert and Israeli soldiers on the ground in Arab countires are EXTREME targets for kidnapping and murder.
The Arrow and other defense systems are made with both of our scientists.
Hell the bomb was GIVEN to the US by a Jew fleeing Austria.
AND the Israeli airforce provides tech support and pilot training. We're one of the best at cracking Russian tech because many of us are defectors.

No I'm not Muslim, and the point I was making is a simple one, if the GOVERNMENT of Mexico...not the folks who are of Mexican descent... moved Mexican troops into New Mexico and started building Mexican communities claiming that they have a right to be there because they lived there long before the Anglos, you and both know that there would be an angry, violent confrontation between the two countries...and if the Chinese government decided to back Mexico with arms and money you can imagine what the feelings of outrage towards China would be....my friends that is how we are viewed in the mideast. Now if you cannot understand that, then this exchange of ideas on this site is a waste of time. As I read these comments on here I get the distinct feeling that many of you view the Palestinian people in the same way that the Native Americans were viewed by the Europeans, meaning that they have no right to property or life itself if they inhabit an area that you desire....I do not support or wish to justify that position. You obviously do.
You ask if I understand what an ally is, yes I do, could you explain to me just what contribution Israel has ever made in our struggles? I was in VietNam '68 and '69 never saw any Israeli troops, never heard of any in Korea, or Iraq or Afghanistan...now I know they did attack the USS Liberty, June 8, 1967... killed 34, wounded 171, and severely damaged the ship..is that your idea of an ally? - 1 year ago

OK here we go, another person quoting KKK websites with speculations on the USS Liberty, an incident that was profusely apologised for, ever heard of friendly fire soldier? Or are you really a solider for us or the Iranian Guard?
#1 an ally holds their fire when the enemy aggrevated by the United States in Iraq fires hundreds of scud missiles into cars and apartments in Tel Aviv, but the US asked not to retaliate, so we didn't.
An ally secured weapons on it's land for their friends in the US, weapons that the US covers up, really dangerous weapons, with US flags on them, that we don't use, that are manned by Americans.
An Ally holds back while constantly being attacked at the request of their friends.
Provides technical support at all levels, including redesigns on F series jets (I assume you're not a pilot or you'd know this) because it's airforce is ranked one of the best.
I actually met the engineers so I really don't care what happened to you in Nam or Korea where your ass shouldn't have been if you had the balls to stick up to your government!
No wonder vets are running around homeless drinking yourselves to death more than anyone else in the country!
You were never proud of what you did and now you wanna take it out on Jews because you refuse to do research on our history? I'm glad Iraq vets are a better generation.
The Mexican Government is made up of the people, and vice versa. And The Mexican Government doesn't do shit to keep it's people from coming here. Why Should Israel?
I love Mexicans and this land is theres too! They have been invaluable contributing members of our nation and gracious half natives (half Europeans) who for the most part lived in peace. The Israeli Government doesn't buy the land for settlements, mostly private people do.
And the Palestinians who claim to own it are actually beholden to the true deedholders in Jordan who sell that shit to Jews at the highest price. It's called capitalism. The Jordanians murdered more Palestinians before we got there than we have since.
Do you know anything about this situation at all or are you just quoting the guys in the pointy hats that drink with you?
The Native Americans deserve parts of their land back in the same way the Jews did.

Just for a second, I would like to legitimately discuss this issue.
Bibi is known for his stalemate philosophy.
When Bibi is in office, there is generally very little violence.
That's because everyone thinks Bibi is fucking nuts and has a finger on the trigger.
Historically though, the guy is pretty quiet.
And those apartments being bult will not be race segregated, again and again it needs to be said.
If you look at Israel, it lies directly near two humungous fault lines.
If East Jelem (and every other friggin old city) is not rebuilt with safer housing all of those people are going to fucking die.
Jews and Arabs together, dead, under thousand year old stones monuments they both idolize. How appropriate.
Now, would anyone like to actually look into the construction company doing the work to see if these houses are properly retrofitted for the 7.0 to come? To see if the workers (mostly Palestinians) get a fair wage or a living wage?
Let's get down to the real business.

For the Obama administration to blow up over this as some grave insult is ridiculous but telling. This is a real and deliberate provocation by Obama, not Israel. Here was an opportunity for the administration to let Israel know which side Obama backs.
The White House had nothing to say (no condemnation, to be sure) about the Palestinian Authority honoring a terrorist mass murderer of Israeli Jews last week.
Murdered Jews or Jewish apartments: Obama evidently finds the latter more repellent. Then again, Obama was silent on the mass murder of hundreds of Christians in Nigeria by Muslim marauders. Never will an unkind word be said about Muslim murderers or Palestinian killers that might detract from Obama's charm offensive to the Muslim world -- the one that so far has accomplished only a projection of weakness, cowardice, and a loss of any ability to weigh competing claims fairly.

While the US gets all worked up about a few houses that harm no-one, "Moderate" Palestinians name city square after mass-murdering jihad terrorist.
But...but...deep down, they really, really want peace! "Senior Fatah officials joined Fatah youth movement in 'popular inauguration' ceremony for terrorist square," by Itamar Marcus and Nan Jacques Zilberdik for Palestinian Media Watch, March 14:
Although world pressure forced the Palestinian Authority to cancel the official ceremonies to name a square after the terrorist Dalal Mughrabi last week, several senior Fatah officials participated in a "popular inauguration" organized by Fatah's youth movement. According to the PA, the square is now named after Mughrabi and an official ceremony, including placing a monument, will take place at a later date. Thursday's "popular inauguration" was on the 32nd anniversary of "the Coastal Road Massacre" of 1978, in which 37 were murdered in a bus hijacking.
Among the senior Fatah officials participating in the popular inauguration were Tawfiq Tirawi, member of the Fatah Central Committee and former head of the PA Police in the West Bank, and Jamal Huweil, a Fatah member of Palestinian Parliament from Fatah.
Poster Text: "On the anniversary of the Coastal Road Operation we renew our commitment and our oath that we uphold the charge and that we will not stray from the path of the Shahids - Shahida (Martyr) Dalal Mughrabi Square, Shabiba students' movement / Palestine] [Al-Quds, March 12, 2010]
Palestinian Media Watch first reported in January that the square was to be named for Mughrabi, After the initial story, PMW published five follow-up bulletins, including one reporting that the day chosen by the PA for the naming ceremony was to be March 11, the anniversary of the terror attack. Israeli news reported that PM Netanyahu asked George Mitchell and then Vice President Biden to put pressure on the PA to cancel the event. On March 10, the PA cancelled the official ceremony.
Click here to see timeline of PMW reports and other news stories related to the cancellation of the official ceremony.
Trying to minimize the impact of world pressure on the PA, Adnan Al-Dumeiri, spokesman for the PA Security Apparatus, announced at the "popular inauguration" that the official inauguration was postponed "due to technical reasons and not because of Israel's request."...

Isreal is an ally to itself. It only helps or agrees when it is in their best interests. I don't blame them for this but it is a fact that they do what they want just like the US. The problem is that they need our money more than we need their friendship. That region is on the other side of the globe. Isreal has no close frinds in the region. No one else to give them the need funds to continue. So we can continue to think we influence actions in the region but we do not until we speak with our wallets not our mouths. As the hate mail will come I am not anti-Isreal or pro-palestine just seeing this from another perspective.

US can only win enormous political goodwill across the Middle East if we distance ourselves from Israel now. Probably our economy will benefit of such a measure as well. If we allies ourselves with losers we become losers too.
Israel give us an good opportunity to distance ourselves and we would cease it now. Any blame for ev consequences would stay on Israel side if we do it now before the upcoming new intifada. - 1 year ago

Dear John,
Perhaps you missed the part where Egypt hates Hamas as much as Israel. Perhaps you missed the historical wins against enemies who were against religious freedom without the aid of the United States, perhaps you missed the revenue the US gets from a trading partner that actually values their currency fairly.
What is clear to me is that you think throwing Israel overboard will save your sinking ship.
But what is clearer to me by EVERY reading of history and a few Mark Twain quotes is that every nation that has done so, every empire that attacked the Israelites, has fallen, quite quickly, after abandoning the nerds. We are not perfect, but we are all about knowledge and effort. You should try it some time.
And believe me, with friends like Iran, you won't need any enemies.
We have survived.
We will survive.
Good luck to you. - 1 year ago

You really ought to look into the situation from more perspectives then one. There are several. Just because a person decides not to support the Zionist movement that promotes occupying territories and stripping people of dignity, does not suggest a resentment towards Jews. You can still love people of all creeds and not support governments that behave cruelly.

Israel is a nuclear armed state in the middle east, along with Iran and Afghanistan. The United States supported the formation of the Israeli state in the late 1940's. What people don't understand is that there has been no major ground war since 1974. Many other Arab nations in fact hate Palestine for dragging them into the 50 year conflict. Israel has created peace treaties with Egypt and Jordan, and as for Palestine, the Israelis essentially have them boxed in. Israel is one of the most politically stable nations in the middle east, with a strong military it won a war where they were outnumbered 5-1. As for the other nuclear equipped countries in the middle east, Israel has the largest accounted nuclear arsenal in the middle east, and it would be a chain reaction if one nuke was launched. If Tel Aviv is hit, Tehran, Islamabad, Damascus, and the other major cities of hostile nations toward Israel will be nuked as well. And something that people don't understand is that it would be one of the stupidest ideas in history to start a nuclear war, the world's economy is too interlinked between nations for war to break out between major nations. And honestly I think people are over reacting, if Obama severs diplomatic connections with Israel we will lose our greatest ally in the middle east, and if Obama's plan is to seek resolution in the middle east through peaceful negotiations he cannot lose the greatest foothold the US has in the Middle East.

I'm extremely wary of our close ties to Israel and the influence of the Zionist elite in this country. I believe our constant support of Israel directly effects our relations with the many of the moderate Muslim countries. But, the U.S. intelligence community works extremely close to Mossard to accomplish many of our covert operations in the middle east.

And with all due respect it is offensive to suggest that I don't remember 911 since I have dedicated my entire adult life straight out of High School to the U.S. Army and have been deployed overseas four times and in 49 and a wake up I will begin my fifth.

Yes they would be biased, but honestly, if Israel were nuked, there would be a M.A.D scenario in The Middle East and all the hostile nations within the Arab League.

The purpose of the Israeli military is to strike defensively not to seek territorial gain, and most importantly the army exists to keep the country in existence, there is no point in the IDF's doctrine that says it will commit to sending troops out to support us in a country which you just said and I quote "... have no disputes with Israel". Why would they in their right minds send out troops into Iraq, which is becoming a more of a stabilized country, and why would they in their right minds send troops to Afghanistan and declare a openly negative militaristic stance against Afghans

Zionism, like Judaism, or Christianity for instance, means something different to every Jew.
I would agree America needs to make it's own decisions absolutely. The advice of a local never hurts though. The main thing is, communist style governments are making a resurgence. Israel is at this time still open and has an absolutely FREE media that includes the only Al Jazeera office that has NEVER been closed. As long as Israel is making a strong effort to uphold free speech and equal rights through court (which more often than not rules for Palestinians if you care) this is a strong indicator that the country believes in the very same principles of freedom as the US.
When Bush stupidly says they hate us for our freedoms, he is giving you a snippet that sounds good, but is undefined.
What freedoms are we talking?
The freedom to speak out against dictatorships the way we bashed Bush.
The freedom to choose what we buy.
Many of these things are drastically missing among those who hate "zionists," because zionism was supposed to be secular and free, ultimately.
The Israeli anthem specifically asserts that we just want to be a free nation.
When your search engine goes where you want it to go, think of the kids in Iran or China who can't really google like you.
Think of the books you can get that others can't.
It may sound simplistic, but our forefathers died for that kinda shit.
I read Dune in English in Israel at 10 because they had a huge American used book store.
Americans live in Israel.
A lot of them.
And we vote too.
Israel even locks up US criminals at our request.
Saves us money.
I am proud to be a progressive Zionist Israeli American.
I feel the values Americans hold dear are compatable with few other nations and Israel is one of them. Including constant fair review of all war practices and extreme efforts to save civilians that have never been used or required by anyone.

Off topic but Dune is my favorite book of all time. I realize that my rant is rather anti-zionist. I honest have the upmost respect for Israel and know that the U.S military has Israel and the Mossard to thank for multiple successful operations in the middle east. It's only that the strong political influence wealthy Jewish American's have over our foreign policy concerning the Middle East. Also, I am Irish Catholic and when I am American I feel a bond with my brothers in Ireland who struggled and fought for the freedom of their country. Which is also ironic because the last eight years I have been part of an occupational army in a foreign land imposing our American policies on a country where much of the population hates us.

Why do people seem to think that the US created Israel?
From 1948-POST1973 when Israel kicked the asses of 7 armies repeatedly the US was virtually no where to be found.
In fact Kissinger deliberately held back weapons in coordination with the Russians to see if Israel would fall.

Israel has been fighting for its right to "exist" pretty much since God kicked Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden. And they will continue to fight until the end of time--and it won't matter how many US President's come and go between now and then.
That said --
President Obama has already tied his legacy to passing health care and the only thing that he is going to have to show for his time and trouble is a footnote on his Presidential legacy that says "he --just like pretty much every Democrat President before him--tried and failed to reform US health care" so why in the world would he want to add a second footnote saying "he tried and failed -- just like pretty much EVERY other US President over the last 50 years-- to achieve a lasting peace with between Israel and Palestine" too? (although I am guessing its closer to the truth to say he knows he will get "blamed" for the US "breaking up" with Israel no matter what he does -- so he probably figures why waste his time and the valuable political capital for no benefit? Or else he figures he will just let some of the crap roll downhill and let Vice President Biden get stuck with being the one who let Israel hand him his ass.)
