Tony Smith, whose son Nicholas, 19, died along with his 18-year-old friend Louis Wainwright on Monday, said: “The fact is that young people have already died and had something been done before now our son would still be with us.”
Mephedrone has been at the centre of a political row since the two deaths in Scunthorpe this week but, so far, Mr Smith said, nothing has been achieved.
The teenagers had been taking the drug, a cocaine/ecstasy substitute sold legally over the counter in Scotland and the rest of the UK but banned in Ireland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Increasingly popular with clubbers and young people, very little is known about the drug, though dangerous side-effects have been widely reported.
A political spat has erupted in the wake of the two deaths, with both Labour and the Tories attempting to appear tough on the new craze.
