Papal letter disappoints; Vatican cover-up ignored

The Papal letter issued by Pope Benedict has left those damaged by the wide spread sexual abuse of children by Catholic clergy hurt and disappointed. While the Pope apologized for the abuse, he failed to acknowledge his own direct participation in the cover-up of that abuse.

As it is, the apology rings hollow; it is but an empty attempt at damage control. The failure to acknowledge the complicity of Pope Benedict and the Vatican in the cover-up makes the apology itself a sham. The failure of the Pope to admit that the he and the Vatican are responsible for covering-up sexual abuse and protecting predatory clergy is just further evidence that the church as an institution is broken.
