US House Approves Landmark Bill to Extend Health Care to Millions

By a vote of 219 to 212, the House passed the bill after a day of tumultuous debate that echoed the epic struggle of the last year. The action sent the bill to President Obama, whose crusade for such legislation has been a hallmark of his presidency.
Democrats hailed the vote as historic, comparable to the establishment of Medicare and Social Security and a long overdue step forward in social justice. “This is the civil rights act of the 21st century,” said Representative James E. Clyburn of South Carolina, the No. 3 Democrat in the House.
After a year of partisan combat and weeks of legislative brinksmanship, House Democrats and the White House clinched their victory only hours before the voting started on Sunday. They agreed to a deal with opponents of abortion rights within their party to reiterate in an executive order that federal money provided by the bill could not be used for abortions, giving the Democrats the final votes. Democrats said that in expanding access to health coverage for uninsured Americans, they were creating a new program every bit as important as Social Security and Medicare, while also putting downward pressure on rising health care costs and reining in federal budget deficits.
Republicans said the plan would saddle the nation with unaffordable levels of debt, leave states with expensive new obligations, weaken Medicare and give the government a huge new role in the health care system.
The debate on the legislation has highlighted the deep partisan and ideological divides in the nation and set up a bitter midterm Congressional election campaign, with Republicans promising an effort to repeal it or block its provisions in the states.
Representative Marcy Kaptur, Democrat of Ohio, said the bill heralded “a new day in America.” Representative Doris Matsui, Democrat of California, said it would “improve the quality of life for millions of American families.”

What frustrates me is that the damn Republicans and Democrat hypocrites who should have just admitted they were Republicans--decided to shift the focus from health care reform to let's get into a pissing match and block ALL legislation in the Senate--even if they previously supported it or they have good ideas to offer to improve the legislation or they were repeatedly invited to offer their reasonable ideas or suggestions-- all because they are so offended the American people dared to elect a black man and Democrat to the Presidency instead of electing an 70+ year old Republican Bush clone. (and because some racist, hateful, homophobic, elitist, yahoos who can't spell and lack a basic understanding of history and misunderstand the concept of irony and who wear teabags hanging from their hats instead of full pointy hoods MIGHT vote Republican in the next election).

It feels so much different from that day on November 2, 2004. Today is merely a reaction to everything that came after that day.
Thank you George Bush for making this possible, without your horrible mismanagement none of this would have been possible.
To the conservatives on Current: you want to know why this happened? Just look back at the decision you made in November 2, 2004 and you will have your answer.

We're all delusional.
Here's an excerpt from The Prophet (by Khalil Gibran) that I thought might be relevant:
ON LAWS
You delight in laying down laws,
Yet you delight more in breaking them.
Like children playing by the ocean who build sand-towers with constancy and then destroy them with laughter.
But while you build your sand-towers the ocean brings more sand to the shore,
And when you destroy them the ocean laughs with you.
Verily the ocean laughs always with the innocent. But what of those to whom life is not an ocean, and man-made laws are not sandtowers,
But to whom life is a rock, and the law a chisel with which they would carve it in their own likeness?
What of the cripple who hates dancers?
What of the ox who loves his yoke and deems the elk and deer of the forest stray and vagrant things?
What of the old serpent who cannot shed his skin, and calls all others naked and shameless?
And of him who comes early to the wedding-feast, and when over-fed and tired goes his way saying that all feasts are violation and all feasters lawbreakers? What shall I say of these save that they too stand in the sunlight, but with their backs to the sun?
They see only their shadows, and their shadows are their laws.
And what is the sun to them but a caster of shadows?
And what is it to acknowledge the laws but to stoop down and trace their shadows upon the earth?
But you who walk facing the sun, what images drawn on the earth can hold you?
You who travel with the wind, what weather-vane shall direct your course?
What man's law shall bind you if you break your yoke but upon no man's prison door?
What laws shall you fear if you dance but stumble against no man's iron chains?
And who is he that shall bring you to judgment if you tear off your garment yet leave it in no man's path?People of Orphalese, you can muffle the drum, and you can loosen the strings of the lyre, but who shall command the skylark not to sing?

Hahahahaha! Yeah this is great because Medicare and Social Security are such great programs. What a joke... I'm disgusted to see how many hateful comments are made about Republicans. Now you're both just stooping down to each other's levels. Who cares what party you belong to when you're both delusional, closed-minded and selfish? Everyone just needs to grow up, stop hating each other and start loving themselves. Everything that matters will work itself out.

You can get "free health food" if you are eligible for food stamps.
Eligibility is determined by a complex formula, but basically recipients must have few assets and incomes below 130 percent of the poverty line, or less than $27,560 for a family of four.

I know people who, thanks to Costco, can now go shopping and purchase food in bulk that makes sense with the family budget. You can get a gallon of Odwalla Organic Fresh Squeezed OJ for $6 a gallon, hormone free milk at 2 gallons for $4. If a family of three has a food stamp budget of $500 per month, that money can go a lot further at Costco and you can get whole foods, organics, low sodium, and other healthful options.

I regularly have to deal with the Florida Dept. Of Children and Families to get my grandmother's food stamps. They are annoying as hell, but yes, I've done this before.
The idea is to provide relief to these families who still have to make rent, electricity, water, gas and clothing expenses. There is some really bad poverty in some places...

Everything has to be paid for in the end. Because when it comes right down to it, the people who make the food and goods need to be paid, they don't do it for free. Food stamps is the government's way to pay for it.
Food stamps now come in the form of plastic electronic cards you just swipe. Every month, you'll get your benefits come in. For my grandma its around $108 every month.

Actually I live in Houston, there are a lot of jobs here, but other than that the quality of life is pretty low. Traffic, pollution, crime, an under-educated population (not everyone obviously, but more than anywhere I've ever lived), ENDLESS urban strip-mall sprawl, and a sea of illegal immigrants = not that cool. Texas has its pluses too, but its not as great as some texans make it out to be. I do like Austin though, I could live there and be happy.
