Ex-ministers in 'cash for influence' row under fire

Ministers have condemned ex-cabinet colleagues who were secretly filmed apparently offering to try to influence government policy in return for cash.

Labour MP Stephen Byers was recorded as saying he would work for up to £5,000 a day and was like a "cab for hire" in the Sunday Times and Channel 4 probe.

Patricia Hewitt allegedly said she would need up to £3,000. Both MPs firmly deny any wrongdoing.

Chancellor Alistair Darling says what happened was "ridiculous".

Here we go, MPs being corrupt, nothing new there then?

    • Didn't think Hewitt and Hoon could slip further into unpopularity.

"According to the Sunday Times, 13 Labour and seven Conservative MPs were approached during the investigation."

    • It's interesting seeing Geoff Hoon and Patricia Hewitt's names linked together again. Last time that happened it was when they tried (and failed) to oust Gordon Brown as leader of the Labour party. They're either both a bit stupid when it comes to making the right judgement call or now they're getting a bit desperate as their political influence wanes and they're agreeing to meet people they normally shouldn't.
