'Scary’ Harris poll: 24% of Republicans think Obama ‘may be the Antichrist’

Image
WakeUpPeople
Birthers, deathers, now, apparently, there are Antichristers on the Obama warpath.

The Daily Beast's John Avlon writes, "On the heels of health care, a new Harris poll reveals Republican attitudes about Obama: Two-thirds think he's a socialist, 57 percent a Muslim—and 24 percent say 'he may be the Antichrist.'"

Avlon, author of the book Wingnuts: How the Lunatic Fringe is Hijacking America, offers the poll as proof that "Obama Derangement Syndrome—pathological hatred of the president posing as patriotism—has infected the Republican Party."

"57 percent of Republicans (32 percent overall) believe that Obama is a Muslim 45 percent of Republicans (25 percent overall) agree with the Birthers in their belief that Obama was "not born in the United States and so is not eligible to be president" 38 percent of Republicans (20 percent overall) say that Obama is "doing many of the things that Hitler did" Scariest of all, 24 percent of Republicans (14 percent overall) say that Obama "may be the Antichrist." These numbers all come from a brand-new Louis Harris poll, inspired in part by my new book Wingnuts. It demonstrates the cost of the campaign of fear and hate that has been pumped up in the service of hyper-partisanship over the past 15 months. We are playing with dynamite by demonizing our president and dividing the United States in the process. What might be good for ratings is bad for the country.

The poll, which surveyed 2,230 people right at the height of the health-care reform debate, also clearly shows that education is a barrier to extremism. Respondents without a college education are vastly more likely to believe such claims, while Americans with college degrees or better are less easily duped. It's a reminder of what the 19th-century educator Horace Mann once too-loftily said: "Ignorance breeds monsters to fill up the vacancies of the soul that are unoccupied by the verities of knowledge."

Pope accused of ignoring pleas to stop priest who molested 200 deaf boys
      ___________________________________________________

Pope Benedict XVI was drawn deeper yesterday into the clerical sex abuse scandal that has begun to overwhelm the Roman Catholic Church, when he was accused of personally failing to take action against a serial pedophile.

The Pope was blamed directly for ignoring repeated pleas by senior American churchmen to take action against a priest who had molested up to 200 deaf boys.

Father Lawrence C. Murphy, who worked at the St John’s School for the Deaf in St Francis, Wisconsin, from 1950 to 1974, starting as a teacher and rising to director, allegedly molested scores of pupils, preying on his victims in their dormitories and on class trips.

But instead of being defrocked and the police called in, it is alleged that Father Murphy avoided justice and remained a member of the Church after a key intervention by the Pope — then known as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. Murphy was quietly moved to the Diocese of Superior in northern Wisconsin in 1974 and spent his last 24 years working freely with children in parishes and schools. He died in 1998 at the age of 72, still a priest.

In 1996 Monsignor Rembert Weakland, then the Archbishop of Milwaukee, twice wrote about Father Murphy to the current Pope — who was head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith at that time, a position he held between 1982 and 2005 — requesting that Father Murphy be defrocked after admitting to the abuse. Documents obtained by The New York Times show that Archbishop Weakland told Cardinal Ratzinger that he was referring the case to him as head of doctrine, not least because the priest was alleged to have used his role during confession to solicit victims.

Archbishop Weakland said his aim was to defuse anger among the abused and to restore their trust in the Church. Cardinal Ratzinger did not reply.

Nonetheless, eight months later Father Murphy was subject of a secret canonical trial — one using internal Church law — ordered by Cardinal Ratzinger’s deputy at Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone. Cardinal Bertone is now the Pope’s right-hand man as Secretary of State, or the Vatican prime minister.

The trial was halted after Father Murphy wrote to Cardinal Ratzinger protesting that he had already repented and was in poor health, adding that the case had run out of time under the Church’s own statute of limitations because it related to allegations made more than two decades previously. “I simply want to live out the time that I have left in the dignity of my priesthood,” Father Murphy told Cardinal Ratzinger, adding: “I ask for your kind assistance in this matter.” Cardinal Bertone agreed, saying that the priest should instead repent, undertake a spiritual retreat and be restricted from celebrating Mass outside his diocese.

“This Dicastery [Vatican administrative department] has every hope that the priest in question will demonstrate a willingness to co-operate in the solution to this painful case which will favour the good of souls and avoid scandal,” wrote Monsignor Bertone.

The documents on the Murphy case were made public by lawyers representing five men who have brought lawsuits against the archdiocese of Milwaukee. They include letters between bishops and the Vatican, victims’ affidavits, handwritten notes by a sexual disorders expert who interviewed Father Murphy and minutes of a final meeting on the case at the Vatican.

A letter from Monsignor Bertone later in 1998, after Father Murphy had died, said: “This Dicastery commends Fr Murphy to the mercy of God and shares with you the hope that the Church will be spared any undue publicity from this matter.”

Victims of Father Murphy’s abuse said yesterday that the Pope should be held responsible. Arthur Budzinksi, 61, said: “The Pope knew about this. He should be held accountable. I believe somebody should be punished.”

    • What is frustrating is that we can't seem to get enough movement on the issues that we really do agree on. It pains me to hear the way we spin off each other, even as we constantly talk about how both sides are doing it for money. If you believe that your side is "not in it for the money as much as the other side," then you just really don't want to know (and, that is okay). I think it is also naive of us to keep talking about how corporations make out on large scale legislation in a country such as ours.

My perspective, with the way that things are, is that I want the assistance that the corporations are getting. As they have achieved the rights of an individual citizen, I want to spin the legal jargon right back around and call each American household an incorporated entity. I want the states to compete for me to live there by giving me a tax break for the first five years of my residence and paving an exit off the highway right to my doorstep.

And, if they are going to make out, then I want assistance with my health care while they make money - not the plague of a pseudo-war, where on the precipice of a global economy taking serious shape, we decide to alienate as much of that world as we can, while drain national resources of all kinds for an oil grab that won't matter in the end. Oh, and we get to risk vital American lives at the same time and help widen the chasm between something resembling left and right politics.

I have a positive review of national heath care for every negative one. And, given the negative realities of poorly run systems, I am so disappointed that people don't have faith that we can find a way to do a better job. It makes me wonder why people are afraid to make subtle adaptations to a capitalist system. Why can't certain aspects have a hint of socialism? I don't see how our capitalist structure is in any danger? At certain angles, the whole of it is defended with everything we've got. I think the super-structure of capitalism is safe. Hell, can't we at least have faith that money will continue to drive and inspire our representatives?

As you can easily tell, I didn't know exactly what I was going to say when I started. But, I can't escape the feeling that, in the end, it all seems to break down to inclusion and exclusion; diversity vs. defined. Sad and simple?

can you sign really big checks to your favorite candidate? Big money campaign contributions get you what you seek. What we as households should be able to do is create co-ops where we merge those with like thoughts and pressure local politicians to do the right thing. Sorry thats a pipe dream, and its too early to fill any pipe

    • I think this demonization of anyone in America has a negative impact. I will keep stating this over and over. If we keep on this path of negative media attacks we are moving towards how the Jews were treated by the Germans in the 30's and 40's. We need to openly discuss policy differences and try to come to a moderate solution. Whomever is in the majority will have the ultimate decision.

Demonization comes first, then advocating violence comes next. Similar to what occurred in Rwanda.

You need to be concerned, the liberals have been trying to socialize our government, economy and the country for 100 years. Communism can't work except on paper, socialism won't work for people who know what freedom is and liberals have changed the name to progresives to make it acceptable to free minded adults and younger through the educational system. We've lost our self-control over the last several generations, no one wants to be accountable... it's always someone elses fault.

No I don't think it's right Nancy and her cohorts are bribing people to vote for her bill.
The rich getting rich off the backs of the poor, "you live in China?
Nancy and Obama are the ones paying people off....you are so naive...how 'bout the Louisiana purchase for $600M for Landrieu or the Nebraska compromise...they won't have to pay the increase in Medicare like everyone else... I have quite a few more bribes Nancy and her crew gave out... How 'bout the deal with the Unions....to exempt their policies so they don't have to pay out the ass like small companies do... so all the union people convinced their "people' they will want this... why? they have Cadillac policies and won't pay the Cadillac tax like everyone else with their great insurance...
Read the bill: The whole bill; all small businesses are **cked, and if you work for a small business and they really appreciate you you will be f*cked, too... If they pay you more than 26,000/yr they won't give you health care any more and you will have to buy it yourself from the government.....
And remember in 2014 it will be the first time in history an American will be FORCED to buy something the government told them they HAD to buy.
But it will be okay for you, sweetie, mom and dad can put back on their policy 'til you're 26yo.

Who funds the museums? I do every year, voluntarily through their fund raisers. Also, by visiting them and paying the 'donation' to enjoy the wonderful exhibits. And by taking classes occassionally. I've even donated time.
The federal government purpose was to protect our borders from outside threat and keep the states from fighting among themselves.
The rest should be local government. The police, fire departments, schools, courts and towns should be local. Cities have their own governments according to what the people there decide on. That takes the citizens time to be involved in their local government. BTW, do you vote every six months? There are elections every six months that effect your local and national situation, not just the 'big' one every four years.
When local schools started here in this country parents clamored to get thier children to the best ones, and those ones were overcrowded. So it was determined that school districts were needed so all the schools had students not just the 'good' ones. Most parents want their children to succeed and will put their kids in the best quality education they can.
Contrary to your opinion most family doctors really care about their patients and do not make money on mistreating their patients. I always check out a doctor's history before I or my family members make an appointment and then if I'm not satisfied with the doctor or the care fire the doctor and go to another one. If you pay them, they work for you and you decide if they are the right fit and if they are doing you any benefit.
As for this wonderful country: the founders left the tyranny that was controlling more and more aspects of their lives without any input from them. They fought to separate from a hugh controlling government. They, very carefully, set about to write the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution to make the government a small, less controlling government. They wanted local governments to be the ones most involved with the local people so the people would have control of their lives. For the people by the people.
I know the current school systems do not adequatly teach the history of our country but it really would benefit all Americans to actually read it's history and then read the Declaration of Independence and what it really meant. Then read the Constitution and the original Bill of Rights, all with an open mind as to what the writers meant and wanted this country to be.
Most people if given half a chance will try to do what is right by themselves and others and with the friendship and help of their local man can live an honest and productive life.
There will always be 'bad' people and they should be treated according to their behavior, to eliminate their trheat against others to allow everyone else to live their lives safely, without threat.
And as for your urinary incontinence it fits you.

Time and time again tax cuts only provide temporary economic stimulus, it never last long, reducing revenue, growing deficits and selling the future. The incredible mess made by republican policies over the last thirty years starting with Ronald Reagan to George W Bush will not be undone quickly and new taxes will be necessary to emerge from this economic morass they put us in.
