are you familiar with the hawaiian language or cultural traditions? missionaries tried to force them to stop speaking their language while trying to force them to learn english. anyway they tought them to read and write (so they could write out bibles in english). but it backfired, when the children went home to practice writing their new english alphabets they needed things to write down, so when they got home they's talk to their grandparents and elders and would practice writing by recording the stories told by their elders... in doing so the children (simply trying to practice writing) they preserved their own native language and much of the history and culture.
