Who killed Scott Summers? The epidemic of disappearing members on Current

Image
Dagum
In the previous seventy-two hours since writing this post, a member by the name of “Scott Summers” has joined the Current community. Complete with a Cyclops avatar and anecdotes from the X-men world, this member played the role to a “T” and was incredibly amusing.

Then, suddenly, he disappeared. No posts, no comments, nothing. The only explanation from the Current staff for why he was replaced with a frowning silhouette was a disclaimer that read “this comment is a violation of the Current Community guidelines and has been removed”. This may explain the removal of a comment, but not all comments and an entire account.

Unfortunately, these types of actions by the Current staff have become more and more prevalent. When I first joined this online community known as Current, I was impressed by the camaraderie shown by the members of the community. Sure the community had its dissidents, (J_Jammer comes to mind.) but all and all it was tight knit and even those that disagreed still shared a bond together. My own impression was that as long as members of this online community stood up for one another and respected each other even when they had differences, this online community would thrive.

Fast-forward to present day and it now appears the greatest threat to the community is not from within but from the outside. The Current Staff seems hell bent on terrorizing the Current community and destroying the bonds between its membership. With every passing day, silently but suddenly, more and more current members are looking like Scott Summer's Avatar posted above .

To be fair, there may be some legitimate reasons for accounts being destroyed. But the Current staff should provide and promulgate a justification for eliminating our fellow community members – instead of the staff kidnapping community members, silently murdering them in a back room, and disposing of their avatars in a nearby swamp.

    • I am under the impression that "Ares_God_of_War" was none other than "tnerrucQUF" reincarnate from Current Heaven. Just a hunch! But then AGOW was also sent to the same avatar heaven or river of hell.

    • This whole thing of banning people has almost become a McCarthyite witch hunt. I'm just sitting back watching the whole comedic process.

A member gets banned, immediately joins under a new name, gets banned again, and the cycle continues. Is it really possible to ban anyone who is obsessed and determined?

    • Possibly everyone should step back and read the TOS agreement from Current and educate yourselves on website posting and creating posts. Current.Com can discontinue anyone's services at anytime for any reason it does not require a reason behind it. IF you had posted something they do not like or it does not fit the website criteria they can ban you for that or suspend your account, If you flame or cause conflict with other members they can suspend or ban you for that.

I have my own media networks and i have to ban people or suspend people on occasion as well so its nothing new coming from a website owner point of view, you want everyone to have a fun time on any website and enjoy the people they are around if there was no control the website would be over-taken by hackers, noobs and people who are just here to cause problems or cause fights with different stories. also some of these stories (like this one) is really not a story this is more of a blog and you should put this on your own website.

    • Don't know much about Scott Summers, I only saw a very few of his posts. But in Current's defense, I must say, if they were banning people indiscrimantly because of their views, I would think I'd have been gone a long time ago. Plus, I curse, a lot. I've been called every name in the book on this site, some of them I even deserved, but I'm still here, so they can't be too intolerant. Or maybe I'm just comedy relief.

    • The very fact that this article is not only allowed to stay up but be in the top 10 leads me to believe that current doesn't just delete without reason. And those that say that conservatives are banned more than liberals, maybe I'm still wet behind the ear but I read A LOT of what I think are offensive conservative comments that go without censorship. I also read ridiculous comments by those that say they are liberal, but I just think sound like idiots that I wish wouldn't associate themselves with the ideology.

I don't love everything current does, no organization can be perfect, but I think they have far more integrity than our usual information outlets.

    • Magneto gained control of a whole island. How? By convincing the mutants that humans (all) wanted them dead. Facts did not matter to him, just as long as they trusted in him.

Notice the negative comments (Magneto like) and who they mostly agree with...then realize that they never liked JJ. So their opinions are under the influence of being a super villain....total lack of dignity and humanity.

Otherwise they would tell the truth...HI was ban becsuse of opinion and not because of rules or they would share their multiple email warnings and not hide thm like Mole Man or how Gambit does his sex partner count.

PLUS Current could never admit wrong. They are as bad with that as Emma. Shhh don't tell her that.

      I will miss both!

It is good to hear all sides whether that side is told in XMEN references or Republican Rants.

No, it really isn't. Name another member who was unjustly banned.

Current admins have always been touchy and they're not going to change. They openly admit that, they get hired to act like jerks. Just don't step on their toes, follow their stupid rules and enjoy the site.

I think he is, crystalman. All Saladin did was state his opinion within his experience. I agree with him because I have seen the same thing, though I think Saladin has been around longer than me. Permanent bans of members (not counting spam accounts and whatnot) are pretty rare ... it may seem to some that many members are "disappearing", but really it seems it's just one or two people under multiple accounts.

It counts voting up or voting down comments as voting up or voting down the story in the profile page.

If you've done that to any comments, that accounts for the ten locations in your profile activity.

    • try to look at it this way: if you invite someone into your house anf they do or say something you find offensive are you going to kick them out or invite them to come back anytime they want to? Whether or not your other guests found them offensive is not the point; your house your rules. Now this scott summers/j jammer had offended nearly every person who had came into contact with him, rarely offered any insightful comments, often ranted about subjects having nothing to do with the subject at hand and posted links to racist websites. I'm really surprised he lasted as long as he did.

    • Current is no different than the new york times online or the washington post online or the boston globe online, all reserve the right to moderate and to not post threads that are off subject or abusive in nature. Its not freedom of speech as it is currents freedom to publish what they want, thats called freedom of the press. So if your here and your not a progressive liberal and your a religious conservative watch what you say, it seems most of the abuse come from those with the most fervent beliefs and believe they are never wrong.

    • Were treading on very serious ground here...I'm extremely concerned that any1; whether its current or utube or any other forum can on a whim decide what is deemed offensive or inappropriate...i take what Chomsky said ("If you're in favor of freedom of speech, that means you're in favor of freedom of speech precisely for views you despise") not with a grain of salt...we all have passions that need expression...tis better we fight with words (no matter how appalling) than knives & guns...for what is free speech if we are hemmed in by those on the left or right or that nefarious concept known as political correctness?...we are by nature verbal anarchist!

"The Current Staff seems hell bent on terrorizing the Current community and destroying the bonds between its membership."

      LOL WUT?!?

Though I've been a little scarce lately, some people would take me as a regular - or a "favorite" if you want to be a dick about it, so what I'm going to say may be taken as a typical bias- .still, allow me to rant a moment about Current and the Current Staff.

The Current staff fostered an environment of discussion and open mindedness. They reached out to community members who were interesting and more importantly, interested in putting time and content in. They sought our input and included us in decision making processes. They offered us opportunities, and if you're smart, Current.com in general is offering you opportunities- to get your voice heard, to hear different opinions, to work on your writing, to learn how to argue, to promote a good cause, to meet awesome people, to be part of something you think is cool.

When the community wants something, Current.com and the staff respond. When we ask them questions they answer. When a group of us wanted to get together they helped us and FLEW a staff member from Cali to NY to hang out with us and throw us a few cool t-shirts. (Anyone could have come, we posted it all over the place.)

The whole point about Current.com was that you don't wait around for it to magically be something it's not. In my experience, the web staff are listening, but they are not in control of every decision made for the franchise and they are not here to cater to every pet peeve and annoying member. Can you imagine what it would really be like if staff took your suggestion of writing detailed explanatory posts for every account they deleted? Would you even really read them?

      Be reasonable.

P.S. No one is being banned from Current because they disagree with someone else. Disagreement is not the issue, disagreement is natural and interesting, a path to problem solving and understanding others. How you handle disagreement, yourself and your words, you attachment issues to this site, etc - that's where problems may be. We're all guilty, myself very much included, of fucking up from time to time, and Current actually has a lot of leeway - they don't ban you for bitching and moaning so relax on the paranoia!

    • what happened to freedom of speech current?
a disappointment really, i thought current was all for freedom of speech and not censorship. Hopefully not going to turn into another case like China, where things that are seen as negative and critical are removed and offenders "banished" or "re-educated". damn anti-revolutionaries these days right? i swear, currents actions are becoming more and more shady by the day.
uh-oh i just criticized them. hopefully i wont be banned...?

I was not aware that stalking was an issue with such minimal information given in our profiles. I could be Alex Trebec for all anyone knows.

I do agree that more respect should be given on this site to fellow members. Far too often, people write rude, obscene, and downright offensive comments. In some ways, it may be healthy to write this with a certain anonymity, but in other ways it is important to have boundaries in place. Point taken.
